Dumb question but I don't know why this isn't working, I'm running XP, I made a new partition and I burned ubuntu on a CD, I booted from the CD and I get the screen to install it, when I select "install", it does nothing. Should I try another CD? or what could be the problem here?

thanks for any help.

By "the screen to install it" do you mean the Live CD's boot menu (which I believe has "install" as part of the default entry), or from the actual installer that you launch from the desktop?

Did you verify the download and cd? I've been playing with Ubuntu at work and the first CD I made was messed up and would start to load then kick out and restart. The second time I downloaded it (same mirror) it worked fine when burned.

Yeah, it was the live cd's boot menu.

So you're saying I should download it again?

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't the live CD only allow you to install when you boot to it? So are you sure it is booting to it and not just running from within windows?

    *edit*
If you are in fact doing so and you are clicking the button and the mouse seems responsive otherwise, yeah I'd try another CD. I had no issues with either the feisty faun or gutsy gibbon releases in terms of boot and install.

I've always used the torrent method to download it, especially since it takes care of verifying that the file is good.

Does the "Loading Linux" box pop up? Sometimes the graphical splash screen doesn't work for some users, but if your CD/DVD drive is still reading from the CD you should be patient because it takes a while to load everything from the disc.

If it freezes up but your keyboard is still responding (see if the numlock light will turn on/off), try using Ctrl+Alt+F1-F7 to see if you can bring up a terminal that should have the boot messages. You'll see a lot of shit there that won't make sense, but errors tend to stick out like a sore thumb.
