LAN connection has gone missing.

Help!
I'm on a pc running XP, and while i'm at uni i connect through a wireless router. While i'm at home i plug an ethernet cable into my mum's pc (which connects directly) and get online that way.
I moved back home for the xmas holidays yesterday, and when i set up my pc once more my LAN seems to have vanished! As in I open up "Network Connections" and it fails to display any trace of a LAN network. It's not that the connection is not working, it's that the connection is just not there at all. The cable is plugged into the correct hole and the usual little green light is present, so I don't think it's a hardware problem. It's just like it's not registered on the system.
I had this problem a couple of summers ago and when my tech savvy friend came over to help me out he deduced that BIOS had somehow been set to turn off the network. I had a quick look around the BIOS setting and failed to see anything that looked like "turn on LAN please" but then I don't really know what i'm looking for.
Nothing in the system has been changed at all really since the last time i connected, and had no problems then, so i'm at a loss for what's gone wrong. The only thing i can think of is that I installed Hamachi a few months ago, and used it about once for 20 minutes. Any chance that's somehow screwed up something somewhere?
Help please!

Assuming you have an onboard NIC (Network port on the motherboard)

In your BIOS, look for an option for Onboard Device settings, such as Onboard Video and Onboard NIC, make sure that the Onboard NIC is set to "Enabled".

Failing that, check your Device Manager (right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware Tab, Device Manager) and see if there's some sort of driver or hardware conflict with the Network Interface.

I can't see anything that looks like "Onboard NIC" :/
No driver issues in the device manager, the only thing under Network Adaptors is "1394 Net Adaptor", whatever that is.

1394 is Firewire. If the only thing under 'device manager' in your computer is that, then Windows is not detecting your wired network card. This could be:

    1. Something got messed up in your registry
    2. The actual card on your motherboard failed.
    3. It somehow got turned off in the BIOS setup.
    4. Something else is messed up.

It could be Hamachi messing up your registry or your drivers somehow, yes.

If you boot off a Linux LiveCD and can connect to the Internet through the wired connection, it's likely to be a software problem. If you do that and Linux doesn't detect your ethernet card, then it's either off in the BIOS or it's a hardware problem.

If it's a hardware problem, your cheapest solution may be to buy a $20 USB->Ethernet adapter. Sure, it's not as fast, but it's way cheaper than replacing your motherboard.

Ok, first off sorry for taking a little while to get back to this thread, Christmas time, busy busy, you know the drill. I do appreciate the help!
Right, firstly I opened up the machine and it looks like the connection is in fact integrated with the motherboard. It does not look to be loose though. I went back into BIOS (which is apparently Phoenix BIOS if that makes a difference) and found the following likely looking options, however it looks like they are both enabled.

    - OnChip LAN controller [Auto] (other option was Disabled)
    - OnChip LAN Boot ROM [Enabled]

    Nothing else looked relevant.

I ran Belarc Advisor and under communications it only lists the bluetooth 1394 adaptor, and under network drives it says "none detected".

Device Manager again lists nothing but the 1394 adaptor, and everything else looks to be fine. There is an "Unknown Device" which has no information other than it is located on the "PCI bus".

If it's software, how do I find out where to find the appropriate drivers to reinstall it?

    Thanks again for the help!

There may be something in the properties of your unknown device that indicates what the device is. See if you can determine whether that's your Ethernet card. Otherwise, try the LiveCD. Then go about looking for drivers.

The unknown device on the PCI bus is most likely your onboard network card, you can find the drivers for it usually by visiting the motherboard Manufacturer's website support section.

And you can disable the OnChip LAN Boot ROM, that is an extra feature used for network booting a computer (as opposed to booting from the harddrive or CDROM).

Phoenix is just a major manufacturer of system BIOSs.

Also the "Network Drives" section of the Belarc report refers to harddrives physically located in a different computer but mounted over the network as local drive letters.

    It was the drivers!
After ages faffing around on the motherboard website I finally clicked the incredibly obvious looking link and got the right drivers. I guess Hamachi or something must have wiped them.
    Thanks guys! Much appreciated.
