The new forums will be named Coin Return (based on the most recent vote)! You can check on the status and timeline of the transition to the new forums here.
The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I'm pretty damn new, but that's not to say this is a LOLOL HAY GUIYZ thread. I've read every one of the comics (they're one of maybe four sites that get through my company's filters). I lurked for about a week and a half before I registered and tried to get a good sense of how these forums operate. I've read basically all the rules to every board I've posted in so far. So the first threads I read all the way through were the Who got banned and why threads (I love justice in action). I don't get the difference between jailing and temp-bans. Also, with the unsavory fact that I'm also a /b/tard, I realize that forums have certain rules and ideas that aren't stated anywhere. Anyone want to let me in on some and ease my transition?
TL;DR What should I know about the Penny Arcade forums?
Jailing: You can't create threads, and your bbcode won't work (including images).
Tempban: You can't log in, meaning you can't post at all until the tempban expires.
Other notable unwritten rules:
1. There are no girls on the internet. Anyone claiming to be a girl is boy.
2. Defender always wins.
3. Always.
4. Don't argue with Tube (Cardboard Tube). He is also always right. Plus he can ban you.

In addition, don't tell people you're associated with what may or may not be a site full of "chans"....
"sauce" is a word that some people here don't take too kindly to....
If you go into debate and discourse be ready to defend your statements outside of the chat thread. People are generally amicable in there but if you start a thread about, say, Ron Paul's policies being great, be ready to back up your opinions with actual fact.
Definitely don't argue with Tube.
There are, in fact, girls on the internet and in these forums.

Haha, best believe i'll never ask for sauce. I have a high tolerance for shenanigans, but even that bugged me. I may be from /b/, but I left for a reason. I needed to be part of a legit good forum.
One of the biggest rules I have noticed here is "Don't be a dick". That is kinda general I know. But try and be as nice to people as you can be. Making a post that says: "I hope Brando dies of fiery herpes and his head explodes" is a quick way to an infraction. Just be cool and listen to what others have to say, theres a way to argue and not be a jerk about it.
As for Tube, I don't know I never argued with him, but I think I know better not to.
just kidding
Being polite is definintely a plus around here, but that doesn't mean you can't call someone a worthless piece of shit, just make sure you are doing it in the right context. One thing that you will have to get used to are that the mods don't always set the best example. For instance there are many occasions where Tube or another mod will take a fat shit on a H/A thread, but if you post the same thing in the same thread, you might get an infraction. Reading the infraction log was definintely a good move on your part.
Haha, the show spoiler button doesn't show up on my PC here at work, so I thought your response was just lurk moar, which would actually have been a response I'm used to. There's some pretty funny stuff on those lists, people do amazing things to get kicked off the boards.

Yes, but we can't bitch about it. I've been infracted once and it was for: you guessed it Bitching.
First person to get jailed in this thread wins a cookie!
It might be you for posting in H/A without posting some advice or something helpful. That's one rule about H/A that can be different from the other forums. Some mods tend not to let the H/A threads stray too much and a lot of off-topic posts will generally get threads locked and/or infractions handed out.
As for something that I appreciate (and others do, as well), is proper spelling and grammar. Nothing irritates me more than posts that are incomprehensible. I'm way more likely to offer some help or contribute to a discussion if I don't have the desire to smack the crap out of you. You don't have to be perfect, just leave the leet-speak, word substitution, etc at the door. A few misspelled words are not a big deal, but when every other word is spelled wrong...

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

Quid's Law motherfucker.
I'll also second the don't be a jerk. And to be honest, if you're feeling angry enough to start yelling at strangers over the internet you may want to consider taking a break anyway. That, and this forum has an ignore button for those you particularly dislike.

Yeah, I'm not an internet tough guy. I've alway's followed this: Violent arguments online are just like competing in the special olympics; even if you win, you're still retarded.

Like embrik mentioned, H/A is a bit different than the rest of the forum, as it's a bit more strict on what's allowed in threads. Jokes that may had flied elsewhere won't here.
Also, when starting any thread, a good OP is usually desired. So if you're starting a thread in G&T about a game, throw in a couple of images, video links, copy and paste a wikipedia description, etc. If you're doing one in D&D, have actual content, not just "Discuss".
And above all, just have fun, and don't be afraid to go into threads you normally wouldn't. This is easily one of the best online communities (Just check out the SS threads) with really cool people and great discussions

This. This is why the PA forums are great, they're like an island in a sea of idiocy. Long words are recommended. Being loquacious (can you tell I just took the GRE?) is a virtue!
Careful what you say around H/A threads. Don't be a douche to someone who's seriously having a problem. I've seen many o' people get infracted for being a bitch to someone who's obviously in need of some help.
Other than the above comments. Expect to be called a faggot by Cardboard Tube, but he doesn't mean it in a negative way.
Oh and welcome to PA. I've been here a short while, and the community is amazing.
I looked at the thread that was entitled: "Post in this thread and you'll be banned."
I think 80+ people were banned that day.

SE++ and H/A probably require the most lurking.
SE++ for the fact that it is a unique subculture and if you don't lurk your chances of fitting-in are slim.
H/A because the rules are strictest here, and you need a pretty sophisticated idea of what passes for help or advice, else you'll pick up an easy infraction.
Artist's Corner is pretty much strictly for people that are serious about creating art. If you are not serious about creating art, you probably never want to post there. There's lots of great reading material there, though. Same goes for Writer's Block (substitute "writing" for "art")
PAX, Penny-Arcade Aventures, and Arcadia Battle Academy are very-specific topic-based forums, there's really no leeway for discussion there outside their stated topic.
Everywhere else (G&T, Tech, MMO, D&D, GV, CF) should be pretty interchangable in terms of rules and posting behavior. Pick a topic, and jump right in.
Do be careful not to create a stupid new thread. We have low tolerance for stupid new threads around here. Do take care that you are either knowledgable or interested in the topics that you post in, we have very low tolerance for people who post just for the sake of posting. Do take care with your spelling and grammar.
