TV Whining Noise

Alright, so the living room tv at my house is pretty darn old. I'd assume its a CRT, but Im not sure if there is any other kind of tv that is big and bulky. Anyways, my mom was watching a video, this extremely loud whining sound started up. I was in the computer room and thought the fire alarm/monoxide alarm was going off. She figures its the cable line that hooks up to the VCR, so she unplugs it. Turns the tv back on, and it starts right back up again.

Anyone know whats going on? Is it time to get a new tv?

Personally I dont recommend trying to fix it yourself of course, the above is just for informational purposes etc..

I'd say if its a nice big old TV that has sentimental value, get a pro to sort it out, otherwise just buy a replacement.

BTW My grandmother used to have a TV that whined constantly like a fucking cat in a blender but due to her age she couldnt hear it. We kept telling her that she needed a replacement, but she kept it and it lasted another 10 years, constantly screaming at 20khz or whatever.
Moral of the story, your TV is dying but it may last for a long time or might croak the next time its turned on.

Don't open up a old CRT and start poking about, for christs sake - they carry enough voltage to kill and maim, even after they've been unplugged. (For anything up to years, in some cases).

So unless you're willing to pay somone to get it fixed, new TV time I'm afraid.
