My ear has kinda ache just a little bit for about 5 days. It hardly aches though its more of an awarness of my ear. Is this a sign of an ear infection, I have never had one before and I am about to leave town for a week. Going to the doctor right now would kinda mess my plans up.
It could be anything: infection, blockage causing pressure, that sort of thing. Don't put water down it, if you have a perforated eardrum or something it will get worse.
It may get better on its own, but it doesn't sound like it is. You should really see a doctor if you can. They'll probably poke around for five minutes and then prescribe you something. It won't take long. If you knew you were travelling, you should have really tried to go yesterday
Worst comes to worst you can go to your pharmacy and ask the pharmacist what he/she suggests.

I was about to put peroxide in my ear.

I had an ear infection on a trip to Florida when I was about 12, and from what I remember it was really painful. You say that it doesn't really hurt, but 5 days is a rather long period, so I'd seriously suggest you to see a doctor. What "plans" do you have?
If it's been around for five days, and has gotten neither better nor worse, then I would think it's not an ear infection; usually, after five days, an ear infection is either gone, or you are fully aware of your need to see a doctor.
You'd probably be hurting a lot more if your eardrum were perforated, but yeah, it could be a number of things. May as well see a doctor, it'll be quick and painless and if you get in the office soon enough it shouldn't mess up your vacation plans too much.

Aye, and also on the off chance that it is an infection, you'll want to nip it in the bud before it spreads to other sinus areas. That's a recipe for unpleasantness. =(
Another vote for seeing the doctor. If you happen to not have insurance, you might be able to drop by a free clinic as well: this is a common enough issue that they might be able to treat you/get you medication.
I got a ear infection a year or two ago, on vacation in North Carolina. It hurt, but it wasn't too bad.
I stopped by a clinic there, they prescribed me some antibiotics, I took them, and got better.
Seeing a doctor is probably a good idea, safer being better than sorrier.
Are you going to be in a different country? That could effect whether they can take your insurance, I'm sure. Do you have money availible (or some way to get some money) in case you need some serious medical attention?
I have insurance I am thinking about waiting until I get up north to go but am concerned if they will take my insurance.
Don't wait. They will likely NOT take your insurance... or they will, and your insurance carrier will reject their bill later, and they'll send you the bill. Go while you're still in your home country to evade that potential trouble. It won't take long, unless they find out it's a tumor or something. (They won't, don't worry )
Thank goodness you went to the doctor then. Infections are not to be fucked with.
Yes, humanity existed before antibiotics were developed... but the life expectancy of the average human was less than 30 years for most of human civilization. Infections were a big, big part of that.

The majority of ear infections go away on their own; if it was getting better, this is probably what was happening.
I used to get them really, really bad when I was little. If it's not unbearable agony by now, though, you'll probably be okay. It's always worth getting a diagnosis, though - you never know what could turn into something worse. But the medicine available these days beats the hell out of the torture that used to be ear infections, at least mine.
I didn't know ear infections went away on their own. I knew this kid who had surgery because he let an ear infection get really bad and the doctor said in super rare cases untreated ear infections can spread to the brain.

If you start losing hearing, go see a specialist.
Do not mess with your ears, they are far important than you would ever think.
Do you use q-tips regularly? At my last ear-infection the doctor told me to stop cleaning out my ears as I was keeping everything too clean, there wasn't enough wax to keep things working the way they should have been.

Just something to keep in mind.
That was always my biggest mistake too. I had many ear infections as a kid... it wasn't until I was damn near 20 that my doctor finally clued me in that Q-Tips to the ears was a really bad idea.

Like once a month. This is the first time I have ever had an ear infection.

Ever? Damn, you're lucky. Maybe the environment you live in is more sanitary than the one I lived in as a kid. But either way, wax is actually your friend when it comes to protection against infection. You may just be lucky enough/in a sterile enough environment to not get frequent infections despite the lack of wax buildup.
I have an idea on what caused this Ear infection. When I went mtn biking with a friend we stopped under a small dead tree and while I was adjusting my helment he shook the fucking tree and all this dirt and crap fell in the ear that currently has an ear infection.
Ah, bingo. Nasty crap + no wax = infection. D'oh. Well, at least you know about the wax thing now. Since I got that advice from my doctor, I've not had a single ear infection.
And I had a LOT of them when I was a kid. Probably too many to be healthy.
I too got them a lot as a kid. Like clockwork every year to be precise. Blindingly painful too at the worst. All I can suggest is that if it starts to reach a stage where you can actually hear your ear pounding, that's the time to get the meds. Oh, and a doctor once told me to NEVER lie down if it gets that bad. Not only did the pain get worse, but he said I could have ruptured the ear drum. Always try to sit or sleep sitting up.
Of course, none of that matters now if it's getting better for you. But it is stuff to keep in mind if it takes a turn for the worse.

its not just the no-wax thing, the q-tip can leave abrasions on the skin in there that can get infected. Happened to me once, earned me a prescription and a reproachful lecture :P
also, although you aren't flying, its worth mentioning those earplugs you can get for air travel. Like $3 a pair from the chemist, and good for a return trip. I've used them because my sinuses hate me, and they worked really well. You just wear them on the ascent and descent and they keep things from adjusting too fast and causing pain. Also, you can't hear the screaming children and crotchety old people.

I think it has got better because it was worse yesterday.
seriously, pay the $20 to go see the doctor man, tonight, it's a lot better than going through an agonizing flight once the pressure hits your ears.
Edit: typed before I saw you were driving...but yeah, you've still got time to just do a walk in and get some meds so you're not miserable.
