this will probably be answered when we do the "best writer of the year" category for the awards.
but i would have to say brubaker or fraction. johns is good too, but ive only ever read his green lantern stuff, so i dunno how other things are for him.
Right now, though, Johns and Fraction and everyone Jordyn posted are super awesome. Also, I enjoy Ellis and Morrison. Really, I don't read anything unless I really like the writer, so you know, all the writers on my pull list.
Vaughan is pretty good, but I am upset that he has abandoned up for the greener pastures of Hollywood. Well, until the writers strike. That'll teach him.

He still has 17 issues of Ex Machina left (not including specials), three issues of Logan, and a new major creator-owned project in the works at Vertigo. He's made it clear that he has no intention of leaving comics, so there'll be more after that as well. He's not going to be as prolific in the medium as he was back in 2006 (with Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways, The Escapists, Dr. Strange: The Oath, and Pride of Baghdad, all in one year), but he's not abandoning it.

"Remember, always be yourself. Unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
Mark Waid, Robert Kirkman, Dan Slott (even if he's been kind of sucking for a while), Fred Van Lente, Gail Simone, Brandon Graham, Jeff Parker, Kurt Busiek, Geoff Johns, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Giffen/DeMatteis, BKV, and Peter David are all at the top of the list, though I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple. I tend to like writers that aren't scared to inject a little humor, hope, or levity into an otherwise serious book.
I honestly don't find him to be that great. I find he has a hard time writing characters in context, which is a problem since he writes a lot of different books.
Also the conversational approach he takes to dialog is sloppy. I think he could learn a lot from Whedon whom I think does something very similar but in a much cleaner way.
I've actually grown to like Bendis less and less over the years. Don't get me wrong, I still think he's a good writer, but I think most of the stuff he's done on Avengers (at least from what I've read) has been pretty sloppy, and that he hasn't written anything on the level of Alias, Powers, or early USM in a very long time.

He's still writing Powers.
And the best USM arc of all (Ultimate Clone Saga) was just this past year.
But I also think his New/Mighty Avengers runs have been great
Plus his Daredevil run is arguably the best that book has ever been.
Ultimate Clone Saga was very good, yes, but a lot of the stuff in the year or two leading up to it was pretty bad. I read the first issue of Mighty Avengers and really, really didn't like it and from what I've read the rest of the series hasn't been that well-received either. New Avengers is decent but I don't think it's anything wonderful although I've only read the first over-sized HC and his most recent arc involving the Hood. And I thought House of M was a pretty enormous waste of time.
yes because of countdown. trust me, after this monstrosity ends I am rehauling my pull list like crazy.
Good lord. You read Countdown over Brubaker's Daredevil?
Hell, I didn't even read Daredevil before he was writing it outside of some Frank Miller trade my stepbrother had from the late 80s/early 90s (One which clearly left a lasting impression).
Is there a collection of Bendis' run on Daredevil? I'm definitely open to reading it.
Also I want to add something to my last post. I think one place Bendis really excels is in his plotting. He's not afraid to take characters to new places (bringing the characters he brought together on New Avengers, well, together was a ballsy move but I think it's worked out) and I think some of the ideas he has for his overall story lines are great.
I just find that his actual writing of dialog is so sloppy. There are exceptions I find where the "voice" he gives characters just work. For example, I can't imagine anybody else writing USM. But then, seemingly paradoxically, I find his 616 Spider-Man to be out of character.

PARKER, YOU'RE FIRED! <-- My comic book podcast! Satan look here!
Don't forget his brilliant Flash run, or how amazing Booster Gold is. And anyone who didn't enjoy Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. has no soul.

there's gotta be some more Bendis love?

I enjoy his writing, but don't find it spectacular.
That shit is golden
Did you not read is Daredevil run?

Read his Daredevil, seriously.
Have to read his Daredevil though.
I haven't read any good Daredevil besides Frank Miller.
yeah you do, namely Ultimate Spider-Man, Powers, and Daredevil.
Also Alias.
Basically he is awesome and he gets a lot of undeserved shit because he does so many high profile titles.
you aren't reading Brubaker's Daredevil either?

not enough money
edit - or enough interest in the character to read monthlies. Maybe a trade here and there.
Thats like.. 2 or 3 more monthlies you could be buying
shame on you

I'm not saying he's terrible or anything, I like the character, but not enough to read him monthly.
Also god Countdown is like my biggest regret ever but I can't stop now because I have a problem.
I need an intervention.

Re: Countdown, how about I come over to your house and smash you in the face with a hammer until you take it off your pull list?
