ArmA: how to make it fun

Are there any mods that make this game fun to play? I want to like it, I really do. I was a huge fan of Operation Flashpoint. ArmA seems to have taken all the worst parts of OFP and kept none of the good. Enemies instantly see you from miles away, the BMPs will return fire before the rocket actually hits them, and enemies are ridiculously accurate with iron sights from 600+ yards.

Any advice?

Get the 1.09beta patch, have a look at some of the more interesting mod-packages out there like 6thSense mod and XAM. Pimp the game with soundmods, more detailed ballistics addons, 6thSense pack for more realistic engagement ranges, Madmatts ArmA Effects, new units, more user made content like missions/campaigns. You might want to change the overly accurate AI too.

Take a look at mission editing, try to make some simple missions and play them yourself (you don't want to know how much time I've sunk into stuff like this...). For example set up some scenarios like a big air raid against a city with some AA, or a fight in the desert, make some units playable for you and switch between them, just watch, start messing with it, have fun. Scripting in SQS or SQF can be quite interesting too if you like that kind of stuff (I sure did...).

Try to find a nice player community/server where you can play your prefered mp-mode with things like nice people, using TS, dedicated pilots, at least some proper tactics, no ramboing (some names that come to my mind: tacticalgamer, 6thSense, shacktactical). Personally I play on a german server, mostly coop and stuff like two player teams competing to get points for achieving objectives in enemy (AI) controlled territories. They use about 30 different addons in this missions, luckily downloadable as one big pack. ;-)

www.armaholic.com, www.ofpec.com and the official boards are nice pages for resources too.

Well, I haven't actually played it that much, but that's not Queen's Gambit's fault because I mostly mess around with selfmade missions or multiplayer. Then again it's needed on the servers I play and some maps require it (example follows..). It's pretty cheap anyway and from what I've read the campaign is better than ArmA but still not yet as good as OFP. Sorry for not being a big help. :|

Here's a pic of the map I've spent the last couple of days messing around with. Saddly, it requires Queen's Gambit because of the additional buildings:
