Phone activation gone wrong

I recently got a used Samsung A990 cellphone from Craigslist, thinking it would activate and replace my old phone no problem. Silly me, I forgot to ask to see if the ESN was clear. Apparently the account that the phone was on previously wasn't canceled, but was 'suspended'. I talked to the guy I got it from, and he supposedly called Verizon and canceled the service. However, the phone still won't activate, and CS is still saying that the phone is active on another account. I'm not sure what is to be done at this point..so if you've got any advice, or experience with this kind of thing, please let me know! Thanks. :)

Edit: I got an email from him saying that he called Verizon and was told it was deactivated. :( Apparently Verizon isn't very good at communicating these things to other employees.
