I just got a new external hard drive for an early Christmas present and what I want to do is put all of our family pictures and things on this so I can reformat the computer and then put all of my music and stuff (porn) on it afterwards.
What I'm curious about is---
1) Should I partition this for music, pictures and other things? I don't see any need to, but this is my first experience with an external. (It's 320 gigs and compatible with both Mac and PC, something about it using the FAT32 formatting system?)
2) How do I make sure that my stuff doesn't get fucked up? Some of these pictures are just candids of the family and everything, but nevertheless stuff we'd like to keep.
Well don't run any games or any programs off of it. Keep it strictly for file storing and things like that.
If you want to keep it safe and intact, you could always make backups of everything onto DVDs as an extra precaution.
Also remember that it is still a hard drive even though it's external. Meaning don't move it or toss it around. Put it in one safe place where it won't be moved at all when it's running. Magnets are also very bad so don't put it near the computer's subwoofer.
Outside that there's no sure way to keep it safe from getting screwed with. So just make the backups of the really important stuff like I said before.
I have a 500gb external and its main purpose is to store all my games so I never have to uninstall and reinstall for space on my laptop. Its as fast as a normal going through USB.

I have a couple of Lacie drives for storage. I never did anything to them. Just plugged them in and started moving stuff to them.
