So, now that it's been out a while - Heavenly Sword?

I'm trying to build up my PS3 library quickly. I've already got CoD4, Uncharted, and Ratchet & Clank, and I have one more gift certificate at my disposal. I was planning on getting UT3, but game trailer's review of Heavenly Sword piqued my interest. I don't mind short games (I beat mass effect in 11 hours, and game trailers claims HS is 8 hours long), in fact I prefer shorter games. I know there was a shit storm on PA about how the game was awful, but I also understand that most people saying so were parroting stuff from other boards who had only limited, if any, play time with the game.

So I'm looking for opinions of people who played the game - good or bad. I have a few shooters on my 360 already, with Halo 3 and Gears topping the chart, so I don't think I'd miss UT3 that much. Should I pick up HS or go ahead and get UT3?

EDIT: Also worth noting that I'm not a huge fan of FPS games, while I am a huge fan of classic beat 'em ups like streets of rage and god of war.

Im not too sure on the library to choose from for your ps3.

I played through almost all of Heavenly Sword at a friends place in one long marathon game (who is a proud owner of all 3 next gen consoles). Its pretty decent. If you liked god of war- you will love this one. The action scenes are fun- but its more or less the same thing over and over again.

If your getting bored of the shooters- pick up HS. Its a slightly refreshing change of pace. Its nothing outstanding and won't blow you away but its a fun time.

I'm mainly trying to pick up the AAA titles. I already have most of the big titles for the 360 and Wii, and I'm trying to fill out the PS3's AAA pickings, slim as they may be. Hence why I picked up Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank as quick as possible. I figure, once I have all the good exclusives, I can just hop around and figure out which platform I want which multiplatform title on (like MoH2 on the wii, Assassins creed on the 360, and CoD4 on the PS3).

Well if you love God of War you simply cannot go wrong with Heavenly Sword. Also, don't miss out on the awesome Resistance even though you're not a huge FPS fan. I own the 360 as well, and I played more Resistance last November and December than I did Gears. Great game.

If you're trying to get some really awesome titles for the PS3, you may want to consider Uncharted. Sure, you shoot things, but it doesn't really feel like a shooter.

I just woke up, and have no idea why the fuck that didn't register to me in your original post.

Uh... I didn't care much for Heavenly Sword, but I thought it was a pretty damn impressive from a technical standpoint.

If you love beat-em-ups, you will completely enjoy Heavenly Sword. It is probably my favorite game on the PS3. I'm a huge God of War fan. The graphics are remarkable in spite of a few tiny frame drops here and there. The cutscenes are quite well done. The story is not terribly surprising, but it still does the job well.

But for me the greatest thing is the combat system. The moves flow really smoothly into one-another and you can get into this groove where you could theoretically go through the whole game without being hit. I'm not quite that good, but I'm working on it. Also, once you beat the game a harder difficulty opens up allowing for at least one replay, if not many more. It's a really fun game, and if you've played the demo, the full game performs much better.

I fucking love Heavenly Sword. It has hands down the best art, animation, voice acting and extra features I have ever seen in a game. The sixaxis controls are used to perfection. I honestly cannot heap enough praise on this game. Any other year and it might have been my goty. Sadly it is 2007 and Mass Effect, The Darkness, Uncharted and Rock Band are all pounding down the door trying to be goty. Maybe I will just call it a 5 way tie.

I don't rent games either but I would buy this game with confidence. You will probably get atleast two play throughs on it and the extra content, ie making of videos, animated shorts, and art gallery will occupy quite a bit of time if you end up liking the game. Also this is most certainly the game I pull out to show off the PS3 when people come over.

You beat Mass Effect in 11 hours? That is a damn shame, you must have missed so much.
    Took me 36.

And almost all I've heard about Heavenly Sword is it isn't worth a purchase at $60. Why don't you ever rent games?

For people who felt bad by paying 60 bucks for Heavenly Sword, I'll tell you that I paid the same amount for Tiny Toons: Buster Busts Loose on SNES, when it came out. Actually, I paid 50-60 bucks for a lot of shitty games on SNES back then.

Anyway, it breaks my heart a little everytime I remember.

Buster Busts Loose was a fine game for its time. It's still a fun platformer. :P

Are you against used game purchases? You can find HS for around 40$ now.

When I buy my PS3 after tax return I plan on picking up HS myself.

God of War, Devil May Cry (1 and 3, naturally) and Ninja Gaiden are some of my favorite games, so I figured I'd love Heavenly Sword. Turns out I kinda... didn't.

The game almost operates like NG's Mission Mode, where they drop your character into a room and after you kill everyone in it, you get put into a different room. There is hardly any exploring around or anything, no sidepaths you go on so you can build up your character over time, no shopping, very few other weapons (and the game decides when you use them).

The combat isn't like DMC's, but I can forgive that easily-- I loved God of War's combat. The thing is, Heavenly Sword's design seems to really players to do moves that look cool above all else. While this is fine for counters and superstyle moves and all that, it really messed me up in the basic combo system. If you want to do 2 quick square jabs, then do 2 quick square jabs in another direction, you can't... the third square will finish the combo unless you wait a REALLY long time. This I suppose will help people that have trouble doing complicated combos..? (Square-Triangle-Triange?) But even God of War allowed players to freestyle a bit with nearly infinite Plume of Prometheus juggles and the like. Compared to those other games, I was just unsure about what move was going to come out at any given time.

Of course the game is bloody gorgeous, and King Bohan in particular is absolutely stunning. The lighting effects are particularly nice. This seems to come at the price of the game's framerate-- and I'm not talking about the occasional dips that occur every once in a while, I'm talking about the game as a whole. Nothing really seems perfectly responsive, as if the animation wasn't being interloped across extra frames properly or the game was prioritizing updating other things rather than the characters (the same thing I felt about the gunplay of Bioshock on the 360) and overall the game was really fun to watch, but I didn't feel too great playing it.

If you really want to buy an action game, I suggest Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Longer, more to do after you beat it, deeper combat system, more weapons, more responsive action, and in my opinion cooler moves (though if you like seeing Nariko hit people int he balls all day long, that's your thing).

Really, get over whatever hangups you have and rent games. Seriously. It's a wonderful, risk-free way to try out games you might be iffy on. I absolutely love my Gamefly subscription, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't work for you.

    No, I don't rent games.

EDIT: And I already have DMC4 paid off.

Really, how hard is it to either recommend a game or advise against it? I said I'm leaning towards either HS or UT3. I didn't say "suggest a game besides HS." I didn't say "convince me to rent games." I asked "HS: Yea or ney?"

This forum is fucking awful about that shit.
