Best Shooter:

Gamespot Editor’s Choice:Crysis
Reader’s Choice: Crysis
931665_73146.jpg
Why Crysis? It's the shooter that pushes the limits of gameplay and technology in almost every way possible. Yes, it's got the most advanced graphics seen to date, but it's also a deeply rewarding shooter that requires you to think as much as react. Dropped into large levels, you're constantly making decisions, whether you're conscious of them or not. Which approach do you take to the objective? Go stealthy or guns blazing? How about using your nanosuit's powers to vault over a fence or onto a rooftop to hide from the enemy? Use cloak and stalk your prey? Do you even want to get in a firefight right now?

One of the most rewarding moments that we had in Crysis was during an escape from a military base at night. Running into the woods, we stumbled into a large squad of soldiers hunting us. The ability to make your own tactics on the fly let us suddenly slow down to use the suit's cloak powers, silenced weapons, and headshots to raise havoc in the enemy's ranks. Suddenly, the hunters were the hunted, and they were panicking at being picked off one by one. This wasn't a "stealth only" sequence; we could have gone guns blazing or bypassed the enemy altogether. It was this open-ended, emergent gameplay--the ability to let us tackle our challenges in whatever way we wished while requiring us to think on our feet that helped the game squeak past impressive shooters such as the highly addictive Call of Duty 4, the extremely polished Halo 3, the creepy and distinctive BioShock, and the jam-packed game known as The Orange Box--all of which are genuinely exceptional games in their own right that are absolutely, positively worth your while. But for being able to make us feel like an incredibly lethal and intelligent predator in a way that perhaps no other game has done, Crysis takes this award.

Reader's Choice: Crysis

Aside from the surprising reader and editor recognition for Crysis, I am surprised that Bioshock doesn't get any merit on the list.

I am pleased that reader's recognized The Witcher to be the best RPG across all platforms. Also to me, Supreme Commander was a better RTS than World in Conflict.

I believe that their readers are easily coerced if they think that Crysis is superior to Call of Duty 4.

I think the "emergent gameplay" example they used in Crysis was a bad example. How many games have we seen before where you could sneak OR shoot? That's not exactly revolutionary.

I'm ecstatic that Persona 3 finally beat out Mass Effect somewhere.

...why was Hannah Montana nominated in the rhythm game category? There had to be some other option.

Same with Orange Box in puzzle. I guess it fits, but that seems like a stretch.

Hm, so far we've been posting all of the year-end lists in this thread, so there aren't a million of them. If you want to copy/paste the OP here into a reply there and a mod close this thread that would be cool. If not that's also cool, whatever.

Hannah Montana Music Jam for DS is essentially a licensed version of Jam Sessions that also lets you pluck individual guitar strings instead of only strumming. I've half a mind to pick it up one day; I've made a few threads about it and got nothing but laughs, but it's no joke.

I would rather have Persona 3 beat out my PAL wallet. There, I said it. Regardless, I am happy that P3 got recognized, the same with The Witcher.

Though God Hand should be Game of the Year this year and every subsequent year until they give us something akin to God Hand 2 - Shinji Mikami, I am looking at you.

I hate GOTY stuff. It's just a big opinion/dick waving contest.

But really, Crysis in the lead as GOTY? Who's played it? The 5 people with rigs good enough to enjoy it on full settings? The demo was pretty generic. There's a slew of better games this year.

COD4 is so superior to Halo 3 in every way. Not to be hatin on Halo because I obsessed over it for months, but COD4, to me, had much less hype and blows Halo3 out of the water in terms of gameplay. COD4's multiplayer is far superior to Halo3's which is the main reason i bought Halo. Even the single player mode, COD4 just seems better to me all around.

Seems like some pretty good picks all around... I thought this was funny in the Dubious Honors catagory for most dissapointing game.

Kane & Lynch at 51% votes

    Lair at 31%

...and the winner is... Tiger Woods? At 3% votes? That was anticlimatic.

I haven't played any of this year's "hottest" titles, so I have no idea whether they are really good or just plain bad, but I cannot escape the feeling that Halo 3 is such a hot cookie this year because it is Halo 3. Doubly so after the cock-blocking at the end of Halo 2.

Please indulge my craving for truth.

EDIT: It's like an unconditional response - you say Halo 3, they go "Woaahaa-aahoo!!!" I'd like to use a Harry Potter games comparison here, but I am not that cruel.

EDIT2: I happened to be browsing Evil Avatar forums during the Halo 3 release period. I do not want to start a flame war, though it seems otherwise.

Ever aspect? You are absolutely wrong.

Crysis lasted most PC gamers 10-14 hours... COD4 was about 5, so Crysis is a clear winner on length. It is also a winner in technical achivement, AI, emergent gameplay among other things.
I think the "emergent gameplay" example they used in Crysis was a bad example. How many games have we seen before where you could sneak OR shoot? That's not exactly revolutionary.

It might not seem that amazing on paper, but oh boy, it is amazing to turn the tables on your adversary. One minute you are being chased through the thick jungle, and the next you are cloaked and quiet, choke slamming the very enemy that was chasing you.
