Orange Box Update: Vid Card LOCK? DONE?

EDIT: We're looking for a video card - if you'd like to scroll down a couple posts my specs are posted.

Our computer is some old bones. I got Half Life 2 when it came out and it ran fine.

So I assumed that running the rest of Orange Box would be fine. In fact I dropped an extra gig of RAM in it.

Now whenever I start Portal or Team Fortress it does the Valve load and I get the loading screen and then a general error sound and were back to Steam.
They're all the same engine - I don't see why it doesn't even want to load - it was bitching me out about Direct X which I updated.

I'll post specs if you guys really want them.

Hmm no, but according to my computer I have an NVIDIA Geforce2 MX 100/200
    Whatever the hell that means.

But NVIDIA's site doesn't seem to have drivers for it?
I'm searching still. I'll be back with an edit in a few.

    Edit: Found, installing.

Ancient garbage that came with our computer.

Drivers installed and still the same thing.
    It's quite upsetting.
Guess I'll have to wait till I get my laptop back - even though I haven't sent it in yet.
    God I love warranties.

Strangely enough I installed Episode 1 and it bitches to me that my driver isn't up to date now - but the game runs just fine - played about 15 minutes worth.

Edit : Caught the error this time. Says I need a minimum of directx 8. But my computer says I have 9 installed(cause... I just did). Same for Team Fortress as well.

The error is probably actually saying that you need a card which supports DirectX 8 features, which yours does not.

Hmm well then. Looks like we'll be needing a new one.
I actually split Orange Box with my brother and it would suck if he couldn't play Team Fortress.

Could anyone recommend a cheap card that'll play stuff like Team Fortress/Counter Strike/WoW on a mediocre level? I mean he already has played Counter Strike for years on this comp - and WoW for a year and put up with it. So anything that'll pretty much just LET him play Team Fortress would be great.

I understand computers technically but picking out the hardware... I'll leave that up to you guys haha.

Same kinda of slot as the one I have please?

what are the other specs for your computer? Processor/ram?

I have to imagine that if your PC has a GeForce 2 MX in it, then there is no point in trying to upgrade its video card to play modern games. For comparison, I got a PC for free last month when someone abandoned it out by the dumpster. It has a GeForce 4 MX in it, and it would still be woefully inadequate for modern games - it has 512MB of PC100 RAM, a 1GHz Athlon processor, etc. I am going to use it as a media PC, since the video card has S-Video out.

I wouldn't exactly call WoW, Counter Strike, or even Team Fortress modern would you?

I mean he's been playing two out of the three games on it anyway haha.

I've got a 1.8GHz processor and 1.25 gigs of RAM.
Really think it's not worth it?

Edit: as for the slot, I'm not sure - I don't know the slots by the way they look. It's dark and a different color as opposed to the other slots on the computer. Edit: AGP?

That would be AGP and it's not worth upgrading.
    Just save your money.

On a side note, that GF4 MX sucks and the GF2 MX is about the same speed as it.

that's entirely untrue. You can still run a good number of games on that rig, and there are a lot of decent video cards out there for an AGP slot.

For less than $90 you could pick up a 7600GS, or a 6800XT for $79, along with plenty of other cards that would be a considerable upgrade from where you're at. You won't be playing Crysis, or probably even Bioshock or Stalker, with these cards, but they should be fine to run the Source engine games with most of the settings on.

Not the fastest rig around, but a hell of a lot cheaper than a new one would be.

Awesome and that's just the amount of money I was planning on dropping to, good good.

Unless anyone has any other cards to add or advice I think I'm good to go.

    Thanks again gents.

And like he's saying, it won't be the fastest computer - but this is my family computer remember.
I just want my little bro to be able to play his Christmas present pretty much.
We dont' have any other games on here and I doubt we really will in the future.
