So the expansion to Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops came out last month. However, I never got around to buying it. It's kind of hard to get a good idea of the game through media reviews, so I figured I'd ask here for thoughts, if anyone actually got it.
My general obsession with collecting everything Metal Gear tells me I pretty much have to buy this game, especially since I loved MPO. However, MPO+ looks to be really focused on multiplayer, which is something I'm not interested in at all.
So can someone give me some more insight on the game?
From what I heard, I thought this was more like an expansion, not a Special Edition of the original game. So even though it's called Portable Ops+, it's not really. I thought it just had multiplayer and something called Infinity Mode, which I think is a never-ending series of randomly-generated singleplayer missions. So yes Hadji, I think you heard right: the missing feature is the original singleplayer game.
To answer your question, no, I never bought it and unless I can find it for $10, I don't plan to.

That's pretty much what I thought about it. I knew the original singleplayer wasn't in there.
I just hope I can find it when it becomes cheaper. I don't want to throw $20 at a game I know I probably won't play, just so I can add it to my MGS collection.
I stopped caring about the series when Snake Eater came out. I get a feeling sometimes that I'm not alone. I had to have every game and side story and all the merch and whatnot until snake eater came out, and then I didn't care anymore.
I kind of wish the series would return to its roots. I hope MGS4 really is Kojima's last, and then the rest of the games can be like bond movies, where they're all set in a very loose setting with no real rules beyond the main character being snake.
Honestly, after MGS1, my favorites are GB and the two AC!D titles. MGS2, 3, and now probably 4 have really lost the sci-fi espionage feel of the series.
Now that I went and read some stuff on it, about the only thing that would get me to buy it is the prospect of playing as the badass ninjas from MGS2. But I'm with you on the availability front, Shimmy. It'll likely be scarce in less than 6 months.
Same with the Digital Graphic Novel. I can't find that on shelves anymore. Though I I heard DGN2 will include the first DGN. Hopefully.
Anyway, if anyone finds PO+ for cheap at an online retailer, post it here.
Why the hell does everyone think PO+ contains the original SP storyline
Seriously do people really think the UMD is like some new supersize DVD or something
Also they have stated multiple times right from the start of development and even in their trailer that this was an expansion meant for the MP mode and nothing more
And people now act all offended when they find out it's not for them.

I thought it was like Substance or Subsistance but with Portable Ops. The title Portable Ops Plus suggests that it's Portable Ops with more stuff.
Maybe they just should've called it Plus. Or More Portable Ops.

Quite a bit of nerd rage here.
First, Japan got a version of it with all the expanded content and the original single player, so no, it's not akin to thinking a UMD is a supersize DVD.
Second, not everybody follows pre-release hype on every game ever released.
Third, and probably the reason the game irritates people, the name indicates that it's an updated version of the original, not a multiplayer-focused version. It's not unreasonable for people to have thought this would be a Virtua Fighter 4:Evo or MGS3:S situation where the original game got rereleased with extra content because that's exactly what the name seems to imply, and Japan also got a product that's exactly that.
It's somewhat like the old "Limited Edition" version of Deus Ex, which was actually a demo. Naming conventions being what they are, you can't stick a moniker like that (or, in this case, a plus to the end of a game's name) and not expect people to not jump to the wrong conclusion.

Um
There is no version of PO+ with both the original SP and the new content so yea
I don't expect people to follow the hype, but if they don't then it's their own loss when they're surprised.
And Portable Ops Plus indicates that it contains the original SP modes. I mean, common sense...you really think a UMD can store the entirety of the old SP mode AND the new content?
Also need I point out that assuming the content of a game based on its name is a terrible idea

"In Japan, Portable Ops Plus was released on September 20 in two formats: the expansion on its own and as a deluxe package that includes the original game and the expansion."
Granted, it's from Wikipedia.
And Portable Ops Plus indicates that it contains the original SP modes. I mean, common sense...
Considering that's how every previous Metal Gear rerelease has worked, with the exception of VR Missions which had a name that indicated exactly what it was, it is common sense to assume Konami would continue their tradition of MGS rereleases. Nobody who saw the name MGS PO+ initially thought "oh, this must be a primarilly multiplayer expansion with single player content removed." More than likely everybody thought it'd be another in the line of Substance and Subsistence.

Obviously, which is why this thread exists asking for clarification rather than the OP just going out and buying it. That said, if a series has had the same naming convention for ages it's not unreasonable to expect consistency. I can feel relatively secure in the knowledge that Virtua Fighter 6 will not be a kart racer.

So right away it shows two UMD's, I believe it was always said that portable ops plus would be more of an expansion than a sequel or anything but I agree with sonic that there's no reason to think that it would have included all the same content as Portable ops.

Metal Gear Solid -> Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
Metal Gear Solid 2 -> Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Metal Gear Solid 3 -> Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Metal Gear Portable Ops -> Metal Gear Portable Ops Plus
One of these things is not like the other...
which is strikingly similar to Metal Gear Solid PO+
To be fair, VR Missions started off as Metal Gear Solid: Intergral, which DID include the original game. However, when it crossed the ocean, they dropped the 1st disc, and just sold it as VR.

Except VR Missions states the exact content.
Portable Ops + states that it's the game Portable Ops plus bonus content.
It's like releasing a virtual fighter expansion that just has new outfits and dressup and shop modes but no actual fighting and calling it "More Virtua Fighter"

Lets hold up a second. What are we argueing about again?
Are we arguing that people should just know that PO+ doesn't include first game content? or are we argueing that people shouldn't expect it too?
edit:
In either scenario, most people involved in PR understand the concept of "Your customers are stupid, everything has to be dumbed down for them"
So... for a person without any knowledge of the game, walks up and sees PO and PO+ right next to each other, which version do you think they'd get?
and explain to me their thought process, and how it doesn't resemeble seeing MGS3 and MGS3:S right next to each other.

If only there was a back to the box which could explain what the game is about or something.
Except the back of the box is really vague and still makes it sound like the original content is included.
Plus, these games are locked up in cases now in most places, and you can't see the backs to begin with. Not to mention most retailers around me don't have the original anymore.
So I did get PO+ for Xmas, and I've been playing a bit. I've gotten up to Extreme, but whenever I play that I get stuck with a "Find the exit. There are mines and turrets all over the place. Good fucking luck!" mission that gives me three minutes to search a gigantic level.
Also, cyber-survival is obviously something not meant to be played unless you're all at 50,000 exp. I sent out my good crew, with instructions to pull out if anyone takes 50% damage. When I checked back, I got:
Ally 1 did not return.
Ally 2 did not return.
Ally 3 did not return.
Ally 4 did not return.

I heard a feature from the original was stripped out of this version, but I don't remember what.
