I bought Oblivion over a year after it's release on the premise I could roleplay as Batman.
I bought Pheonix Wright after I had a dream of Pheonix doing his trademark pointing towards a shelf-full of the games in question and felt compelled to buy it the next day.
I'm planning to buy Assassins Creed after playing it at a freinds house and having way too much fun pushing guards off buildings and playing 'the floor is hot lava'. I'v bought and read the art book but the game mechanics and the slapstick antics of guards amuse me to no end.
Anyone else have any reasons for buying a game other than playing the game in the way that it's intended? For example, did you just want to mess around with the game's level editor instead of playng the actual game? Take note that 'I bought it for a freind' doesn't really count.
I bought the Warcraft 3 Battlechest specifically for DotA.

Also I originally got into FF7 after watching my brother fly the airship around. The jerk wouldn't let me play his game just to tool around in it so I had to play the game myself. Glad I did

My brother bought Guitar Hero 3 for what turned out to be just the controller (he uses it for Frets on Fire). I bought Tropico and Crimson Skies because the demos were fun, but also because of the music. Maybe 60-70% of each purchase was because of the music.
I remember being motivated to buy a TurboGrafx-16 and Bonk's Adventure after having a dream of playing on a TurboExpress (no way I had the money to buy the portable version of the game system, though).
I've always been a sucker for what Kenny from MXC would call 'hot chicks' in games, thus my investment in games like Valis II and III and El Viento, among others. To say this has changed as I've matured is somewhat belied by the fact I almost always use female characters in fighting games.

why would you play frets on fire over guitar hero?

I wouldn't play any of them, but Frets on Fire has more music and it actually runs on our computer. My brother neglected to check the minimum system requirements. Finally, in Frets on Fire you can't fail a song, which is nice for getting better instead of getting owned.
I bought Legacy of Kain: Defiance solely for the Cardboard Tube Samurai reference. I'd like to play the Kain games, but I want to start with the first. Thus, I haven't touched Defiance yet.
It turns out that while I convince myself that I buy games for the purpose of actually playing them, the reality is that I end up buying them because I am apparently some sort of obsessive-compulsive collector type.
Dammit.

In my younger days I would buy a game if it had a hot enough woman on the cover.
Those days aren't exactly over, but it really takes something special...
In general a really low price mixed with a really good cover will get me to buy just about any form of media. Books, CDs, DVDs, Games. Unlike what your parents told you, most of the time things with really awesome cover art (especially albums and games) will be awesome.
But what about great games with bad cover art? Orange Box? Ico?
Ah, but Ico has amazing EU art.
Anyways its not one of those things where it goes the other way. Plenty of amazing games have shitty art. It's just rare that a game with a good cover is shitty.
The last game I bought solely because of its cover? God Hand.

I get the impression you're schizophrenic, then again I bought GTA San Andreas solely to see how many cops/FBI/national gaurd I could kill before I died, (my record is 278)
I bought the limited editions of World of Warcraft + expansion, Guild Wars + all expansions and Gears of War for their art books (I played WOW, but not GW and I don't even own a 360).
I'm really miffed I didn't buy the Bioshock limited edition, because I could have traded the broken figurine for an art book, as it turned out.

Why do you say I'm schizophrenic? I'd say I'm just more easily amused than most folks. For example ,my first ever attempt at playing Call of Duty 4, while in a crowded room, consisted of me putting the theme tune to 'Team America: World Police' and running around trying to stab enemies in the face. I don't exactly play gmes the 'way they are intended' but as soon as I started to take COD4 seriously I lost interest until me and a freind were just watching in the background making jokes about American stereotypes.
And thus from that day forward, guns are now refered to as 'America sticks' and grenades 'Freedom spheres'.
Christ I'm like that crazy old guy you see at the nursing home rambling on about his war stories, you may have a point there.
I bought Daikatana. My friends would come over and we would sit in a circle and put Daikatana in the middle and point at it and laugh. Hahaha John Romero, hahaha!

They're pretty much the exact same except FoF is free and has free song downloads.
Also, the entire soundtrack from all 4 GH games has been ripped and formatted for FoF use, so you're not relying on shoddy community work in order to get songs.

I have to ask. What is intended exactly. I thought games were supposed to be about having fun. If you play them slightly differently, but are having fun, aren't you playing them for the correct reason?
The whole idea of intended brings up the idea of there being a "proper" way to play a game and man, that's a road sane men do not want to walk down. That way lies either madness or nerd heirarchies, and yes there are only two choices.
The only way in which I would say intended could apply is for a multiplayer game, since you are interacting with other humans and so conventional rules for interacting with humans applies. For a person by yourself? Play it however you like. There is no right way.

I bought the Linux version, Special edition tin-box version of Quake 3 even though I already had Quake 3, and don't use Linux, because I liked the tin box and figured I might as well have a 2nd CD key. It was also in the bargain bin at Micro Center for $2.

Oh I bought about three copies of half life 1 and a second copy of homeworld just to support the franchise and to get new cd keys because I have a habit of losing my stuff.

I don't remember if I could buy CS:Source alone back then
...HL2 ended up being pretty good, though I lost interest about 60% through. I just can't really get into single player FPS
...unless it's a Thief game
Arty games such as? I myself am a pretensious arty gamer.
Edit: Damnit, now I HAVE to play it. Talking about it triggered a craving.

I always thought it was just coincidence, but by jove you're right!
Planescape: Torment.
It sure as hell scared me away from the game initially.

That cover is terrible.
Though I guess it aptly describes what the game is about.
I bought Mass Effect pretty much solely based on cover art. I didn't follow the hype at all. But the box? That shit looks epic.
And of course it was solid gold.

The greatest game ever made.
Rez, Shadow of the Colossus, Electroplankton, Odama.
And some stuff so pretensious, it hasn't even been made yet.
For most of the game Jeromy Irons yells at you with instructions to play the game that are obvious.
After hours of this annoyance. Each time we are told to use your magic on something, we replaced the word Penis for magic.
ex: "Eragon use your penis on the gate"
"Eragon use your penis to move the rocks"

Playing it holding my Keyboard and using F1-F5 is as metal as it gets.
