So I’ve recently picked up the 2 ultimate X-Men collection books and really enjoyed them and was hoping to expand my inertest into some of the other ultimate series’. I used to really be into Spiderman and Iron Man when I was younger ,regrettable I never had the joy of reading the comics just watching the TV shows and being told about the story from friends. So where would be a good start to jump into Iron Man and Spiderman because I’m a little confused by when the Avenger stuff takes place in regard to there stories and also the Civil War stuff?

Cheers.

Ultimate Marvel is completely seperate from regular Marvel.

Civil War was in the regular, 616 Marvel universe.

The Ultimates, oddly enough, takes place in the Ultimate Universe.

In the Ultimate universe, The Ultimates takes place many years after Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men.

Start by reading all of Ultimate Spider-Man because it's glorious.

For Iron man, I'd recommend the regular universe. Start with the most recent volume, which had a story arc written by Warren Ellis that was amazing.

You should really read all of Ultimate Spider-Man because it is awesome. So, begin at the beginning, there are the ultimate collection paperbacks now which are quite reasonably priced.

For Iron Man, his story is mostly told in Ultimates and Ultimates 2, though there is an Ultimate Iron Man miniseries in trade and a second mini that is just starting in single issues. Ultimate Iron Man takes place before The Ultimates, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Ultimates 1 and 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man are by far the best of the Ultimate Universe. Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Fantastic Four have had some good runs, but they have changed writers a lot and can be hit or miss. Some of the miniseries are decent, some are not that great.

Where has it been said that the Ultimates take place years ahead of the other books? First time I've been told of this.

He's wrong, the ultimates are well established in ultimate spider man, and ultimate xmen, and ultimate fantastic four. According to the timeline, UFF comes first, or around the same time as the ultimates, then comes spider man and xmen. It's all within the same five year span. As far as what was RELEASED first, yes, ultimates came last.

Also, go to the graphic violence forum, you'll find everything you need in stickies there. However.

The ultimate universe is both a reboot and alternate universe. It's the same characters, but with tiny little differences here and there. It's really good if you want to get into collecting again, as the trades are widely available and the back issues don't cost too much. Even a lot of the number ones are under $30

The marvel 616 universe is home to the house of m, civil war, and avengers dissassembled. There's a lot going on there, so if you want to get caught up, I reccomend these trades, in this order.

    Spider Man: The other
    Iron Man: Extremis
    Avengers: Dissassembled
    House of M
    Civil War
    Spider Man: Back in Black

Once you read those, you can start catching up on x-men messiah complex, spider man one more day, and the rest of the new years storylines. This should catch you up on the last few years. Good reading.

The Ultimates exist during the other books, but the shit that goes down in them hasn't happened yet for Spider-Man or the X-Men. The Ultimates are at an early point in their career during Ultimate Spider-Man. "Many years" may have been a slight exaggeration, but there's at least several in between The Ultimates and the rest of the books. Especially volume 3. And Ultimate Power is the farthest along in chronology.

Thats not exactly true, since Nick Fury was deposed at the end of Ultimate Power and that change has been reflected already in the most recent arc of USM (with Carol Danvers as the new head of SHIELD)

I think they make the Ultimates books start up a bit in the future of USM but they come out so slow that by the time the Ultimates are ends, USM is about even with them in the timeline. Or something.

I could have sworn that was some other plot point and not the one from Ultimate Power, but that does make sense.

It was always my understanding that to alleviate any issues with the large scale issues that were dealt with in the Ultimates, they had stated that the first one was relatively in sync with the standard comics, but that the events of the second season, or Ultimates 2, took place with roughly a year gap in between them, and then maby a 6 month gap from season 2 to 3.

Think of it as the realtime break that you would experience between seasons of a television series.

Some of the events, well lets face it most of the events in season 2, would really stand out not being referenced in the regular series so they had to offset them slightly, given that they are really trying to develop a nice cohesive universe that has allot of interrelating elements.

Honestly the comic fan in me really think it hearkens back to the original Image published WildStorm comics, where you had a few separate series that as they developed started to inter-relate to each other and you learned that over time their backstorys were intermeshed, it really drew in the readership, as they were able to really immerse themselves in it.

I dont think it really matters where the Ultimates series is continuity wise, it stands well as its own story.

Also, I havent read it yet but apparantly Ultimates 3 is utter shit.

It's really not that bad, it's just a rapid change from what we got used to over the last few years. I personally love the new artwork. The old art was extremely detailed, almost alex ross like, but this is much more dynamic, which is what a comic book should look like in my opinion. The story is a little lacking though compared to what they just finished.

I dont think the art is bad, but the character designs are completley inconsistent with the characters that have been established in the universe.

I mean over in 616 its not like some artists draw Ms Marvel blonde and others a brunette, she's always a tall statuesque blonde because thats who she is.

But in Ultimates 3 Thor suddenly speaks old english when he never did before, his costume and hammer design have changed completely with no explenation.

and for god's sake Ultimate Wasp is supposed to be a petite asian woman, not some busty redheaded chick.

and there is no story yet, just some nonsensical fight scene where Venom shows up for no reason and can somehow take on the entire Ultimates team.
