Scary Movie

Alright, here's the thing. I'm not some hardass with brass balls. I'm a normal guy. Be that as it may, ever since about halfway through Doom 3, nothing is scary. Neither jump out at you scary or mindfuck scary. The closest I've come is the CONCEPT behind Children of Men. That stuck with me.

I have not seen the first Hellraiser, and I hold out hope for it. Can the almighty oracle that is H/A give me some movies that will make me poop myself?

You'll only be scared if you want to be. I could walk into any movie saying "I won't be scared, all the monsters are puppets" and I won't be scared. The first step, I'd say, is only watch scary movies with the state of mind that you WANT to be thrilled.

I mean, are you scared of visuals or more of concepts? Visually, Silent hill was a great scary movie. Same with the original Ring. It's harder to find really conceptually scary movies these days, and older movies don't stay scary for very long.

Also, see scary movies in theaters or dark rooms. The immersion is paramount for the thrills.

Ah yes, that's right, the first hour or so of Silent Hill was pretty damn terrifying. Partly because I first experienced that game when I was like 7 (maybe older, I'm bad with math), partly because the environment was wicked.

    Have you seen The Shining?

Thats really the only film I've seen which genuinely inspires pure, panicky fear in me.

I watched it on A&E, which I think has killed it for me, because every fifteen minutes there was another goddamn commercial. I thought it was an excellent movie, though.

The Others and the Descent are the only recent movies that have done crap for scaring me

The Descent is scary for violent scary purposes, you'll see, but I know plenty of people who didn't like it at all, and The Others is conceptually scary, to put it that way.

Don't read A SINGLE WORD about The Others, as it being spoiled would suck the scariness out

The Others had a wicked twist, but unfortunately I guessed the ending before it got there. I hate doing that, although it allowed me to ruin the Lake House for a bunch of girls. The Descent was tense, but I wouldn't say it's scary. For the first half of the movie, I just thought I was watching a spelunking film.

I am Legend kind of stuck with me. Not scary, but the feeling of being alone stays with you. The ending, eh... it's up to you to decide.

There's a japanese movie called Suicide Club. It is disturbing only because it's kind of random but hides it behind a veil of "it's a japanese movie so it's supposed to be subtle therefore it's already better than your pathetic english movies." It has moments that will freak people out if you just pop it in the player.

Also, Audition freaked me out purely for the ending. Good God.

As far as scary movies go, The Grudge is the only recent movie that really got me. Not the Grudge 2 so much, but yeah. Very creepy.

If you are going to go with The Grudge, at least find Ju-on, the original.

You want intellectually terrifying? Try to find a copy of Closetland.

edit: never mind, it still hasn't been released on DVD in the states... :P

I got freaked out over that movie the eye. Not the new one with Jessica B. but the original.
The part that really got me was she was in that kanji (sp) class. Hoo! That still gives me chills.

As what someone else said. If you're going to be a spoilsport and go into a scary movie without wanting to be into it, you wont be into it. That goes for any form of entertainment.

You just need to learn suspension of disbelief again.

Silence of the Lambs by the end of it scared the fuck out of me.
The bit with the night vision? And he reaches out? Good fucking god.

Ju-On is also fucking creepy by the end of it, it's a slow build up but well done.

Alot of people classify it as torture porn but I think Wolf Creek (an Australian movie) is scary as shit as it genuinely generates the idea that everyone is going to die. Some people found it too sadistic (I didn't find it too sadistic personally) and think that it detracts from the movie though.

Maybe you're right, but how do I do that? I go to movies and just try to focus on the movie. I love being scared, and it hasn't happened in a while.

I watched Ju-On 1 and 2 a month or two after seeing the Grudge when it came out in theaters...they didn't bother me nearly as much as the Grudge did (though the end of Ju-On 2 was creepy as hell). I don't know *what* it was, but *it* got to me.

with all the lights off. and nobody around you.

my brother is a pretty tough guy to scare/freak out when it comes to scary movies, and halfway through the movie, he had to come upstairs and hang out with my mom because he was so freaked out

I'll second that. Movies always seem to much scarier when "they are based on a true story or event".

Another movie that scared the hell out of me was an early 80's movie called "the entity" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082334/

Can't just tell you what to do. I can not get immersed into movies at a movie theater. some shit head always brings a baby, some fat guy is always russling popcorn. Movie theaters are the worst places to see movies, in my opinion.

I live for home theater set ups and drive in theaters. Privacy. Let you get really into the movie.

Aside from that, you could also try building up your paranoia factor again. Read some scary stories. There was an awesome thread in D&D a while ago, might still be around, do not frequent there.

Get yourself paranoid. Thinking about the fact that someone might be outside your house right now. The fact that little noise you heard might be something scurrying across your floor.

The major fear that movies instill are the sense of dread when you are alone or in a similar situation(IE Getting onto a freeway after final destination 2 or something better. haha.) The jumps you get in the movie theater are just cheap startles.

Event Horizon is pretty awful, and I didn't think it was scary, but my friend thinks it's terrifying. People react to horror movies in a lot of different ways, for me it's movies like The Exorcism of Emily Rose that really scare me, as opposed to things like Nightmare on Elm Street.

    Truth.

A ticket, Popcorn, and Drink ends up being $20-25 and first run theatres here, or $10-15 if you want to wait and see it a couple months after release at the less expensive theatres. In my opinion you get far more bang for you buck if you buy the DVD for $20.

    The Exorcist.

Scariest movie I've ever seen. Just creeped me out.

Event Horizon is also way up there in the horror category.

I'd like to recomend The Blair Witch Project, but only if you don't know anything about the backstory. It's most effective that way. It's really only scary for one viewing, because you don't know what to expect.

Jacob's Ladder may not scare you, but it's such a phenomenonally good movie that it's worth seeing. And, as a fan of Silent Hill, it'd be nice of you to see where some of the elements of the series came from.

Blair Witch actually worked very well in the theatre.
the final scene, with what's his face facing the wall and the camera falling, caused the entire theatre to gasp and lean back in their seats. It was terrifying and amazing at the same time.

Event Horizon didn't bother me at all...and it was a dark and stormy night when I watched it.
Just that first scene when Sam Neil makes that ridiculous scream...I laughed *so* hard. The movie couldn't get scary after that

Good Point. The elements are really easy to spot. Also, without giving away any of the plot there were some true events that the movie is loosely based on.
