God you guys, this series is the best fantasy series ever written. It is a no holds barred action packed masterpiece, arced over seven books (three of which are not out yet)
My favorite thing is that George R.R. Martin does not care if you get attached to a character, because he will kill them off. No mercy.
The next book, A Dance of Dragons, is the most anticipated book ever.
Also, Javen, A Dance of Dragons was never meant to be the last book you are on crack
Thats no entirely true, when he first came up with the series he only intended it to be 4 books long and the final volume was going to be called A Dance with Dragons.
That plan went out the window awhile ago though, he says the series will take 7 books to complete.
Also: these books are amazing and I approve of this thread

Sandor is not dead, and Gregor is now FrankenGregor
way to not pay attention, champ
I really hope none of that shit is true. There's been a growing element of magic and sorcery and whatnot ever since the second book and it's one of my few gripes with the series. I guess it's more or less required since you know Dany is going to come back at some point in the fifth book with a cadre of fucking dragons but it still pisses me off that wizards and spells and whatnot is starting to overtake deception and manipulation as the forefront in story progression.
none of what shit?
Magic is becoming slowly more prevalent because dragons are the source of magic. since dragons are coming back, magic is as well. Also there is nothing magical about Sandor not being dead and Gregor becoming a Frankenstein monster. It's called crazy science.

Sandor is certainly alive and there is nothing magical about it. As for Gregor, yeah it's a crazy mix of science and Necromancy that have led to his rebirth as THE QYBORG
there will be an HBO show with each book being one season long
YESYESYES
I am warily excited about this
ASoIaF is awesome because it is totally brutal and raw and the characters are incredibly complex
Also, you know, incest, rape, murder, warfare, sex, etc
If they manage to portray all that right and not get thrown off the air, even despite HBOs lenient standards, I will be surprised
They could totally not be thrown off the air. You're being paranoid. If it's well-done, it doesn't matter. Look at the Sopranos. ASoIaF is only marginally more violent.

Well, I didn't so much mean "thrown off the air" as I am wary that the shows producers will be willing to to portray the universe as it was really meant to be
Also the books are pretty complex and I question their transition to script/screenplay format

I think HBO will probably get away with it. Since the channel isn't part of your regular cable broadcasting, it's pretty much limited to the extent that pay-per-view porn is restricted, isn't it?

I think it'll be interesting. I want to see some progress on the series before I make any judgments.
I just don't dig all this "Lord of Light" stuff. I know it's a little late to complain about it now since it's really been around since the second book, but I liked it better when it was treated as a strange religion and people weren't setting swords aflame with their blood or get up after being cleaved from the shoulder to just about the belt strap.

sandor is dead, arya left him to die didn't she? and gregor was taken by the poison?
Arya left him for dead after he was wounded in the battle with the Brave Companions. No one actually saw him die. Then again, much like Gregor, the last we've heard of him since have been whispers and rumors.

She left him to die, but he didnt. The bandaged gravedigger at the monastary that Brienne visits is Sandor Clegane.
As for Gregor, remember Cersei gave his dying body to Qyburn so he could run his "experiments" or whatever. What do you think he was doing down in the dungeons with the body and a monstrous suit of black armor? Creating an unstoppable undead golem of course

Yeah, one of the nice bits is that the narration changes depending on who's doing the POV for that chapter, which made Tyrion a lot of fun to read. Film wise I guess they'd have to do voice-overs to really give you an idea of what the characters are thinking, especially for characters like Arya where there's long periods with no one for her to really talk to.
Also, man, I really want to see who they pick to play the roles of Jon, Arya, Davos and Tyrion.

There are frost zombies in the prologue of the first book.
Plus, except for one specific instance the flaming swords are tricks, they aren't the real deal.

I was soooo fucking pissed when
Gregor beat that Sand Viper dude in the duel. I was like "B-but... he's the bad guy! I mean, your track record thus far says that doesn't mean a whole lot... but still! "
I cannot wait for the fifth book. Hopefully it'll be out by 2010.

I fucking loved every second of it and if he dies before it comes out then SO HELP ME GOD
but I haven't read them yet

I only like books that are movies.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
there's no movie
BUT
there will be an HBO show with each book being one season long

edit: damnit, kusu.
Also dammit I wish he'd stop touring and just write. We all saw what happened to the Wheel of Time dude, and GRRM doesn't really look... healthy.
none of what shit?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, we don't need a goddamn thread every time something cool comes along.
he actually cancelled a tour he was supposed to do towards the end of this past year so he could stay home and write
Uncool things of monumental importance
i just said this
we can have a The Dark Knight thread and a Movie Thread.
therefore we can have an ASoIaF thread and a Book thread.

The Drogo/Dany stuff in the first book wouldn't fly as is.
Aside from that though, I dont see anything that hasnt been done on other HBO shows before
am i missing something?
oh it could totally work. that's how it was back in the day. just let's not show the sex scenes.
dude it's a fantasy book
Malazan Books of the Fallen begs to differ
You made a thread for one movie, didn't you?
As for Gregor, remember Cersei gave his dying body to Qyburn so he could run his "experiments" or whatever. What do you think he was doing down in the dungeons with the body and a monstrous suit of black armor? Creating an unstoppable undead golem of course
Martin knows when to reward the readers
when the shit with Cersei finally started going down
goddangit i cheered
that's what you get you bitch
