The only game I'm actively looking forward to is Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but I guess I'll buy Starcraft II once it comes out (assuming my computer can run it).
Chances of it being released this year are more or less non-existent, but I'm still seriously, insanely looking forwards to how they finish the current story arc for Gordon. Will Adrian Shepard make an appearance? Will Chell? Will Breen, maybe? Also, there's the pressing issue made so clear throughout Half-Life 2: Episode 2.
Genesis does what nintendon't. Nintendo is what genesisn't. To be this good would take ages, to be this good would take Sega. It would take Sega Ages to be as good as Nintendo. Chaos emeralds vs Power stars. Blood on mortal kombat. Smashing the myth of blast processing. Kidtendo 64. Sega Suckturn. Blue vs Red. Speed vs power. Save the animals! Save the princess! Best friend is a fox. Brother's last name is my first. Rival is red and an echidna. Rival is fat and greedy. Inaugural square on walk of game in LA vs Inaugural square on walk of game in LA. Member of Smithsonian institute for cultural significance vs member of Smithsonian institute for cultural significance. More popular than mickey mouse vs more popular than disney. Honored as the name for a genetic trait vs name honored a local employee. Icon vs Icon. Legend vs Legend.
Freaking hundreds upon thousands of playground fist fights occurred over this one single event, the one event that would cause the gaming world to implode upon itself if it ever happened. It could never happen. It would never happen! Countless lunchroom arguments, it defined a fucking generation of gaming. The epitome of the most vicious console war of all time defined in 2 freaking characters. 2 symbols for long time hardware and software rivals, both of whom put their respective corporations on their back and fucking ran with it. When "who will win the console war" was synonymous with "when will the sequels be out?" The standard by which all video game rivalries would forever be judged. 17 years in the making. A project started specifically to be everything the other wasn't. This is fucking it, this is fucking it !!
Also looking forward to more info on the new Bioware MMO and the new Blizzard MMO. Also looking forward to seeing if rumours of an Elder Scrolls MMO are true in any way. Truth be told, I'm just looking forward to seeing how the MMO industry evolves through 2008.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is on the Borealis?
I doubt that Shepard will make an appearance. If I'm not mistaken Marc Laidlaw has said he doesn't consider Blue Shift or Opposing Force to be cannon. I'll see if I can find the exact quote.

They threw a nod to Shepard into Portal, and I think it's been said before that they might use him in future. A very vague might, though.

Really, where was this nod? I must have missed it when I played through.
My big five at the moment: Spore, Brawl, Starcraft 2, Okami Wii, Guild Wars 2.
Yeah I too am looking forward to spore for the last 4 or so years. If the delays keep comming then it will start to be the next DNF, therefore I just try not to think about it. When it's a month away THEN I'll get excited for it.

Given Barney's role in Half-Life 2, I'd say that at least makes Blue Shift canon if nothing else. As for Opposing Force, well, there hasn't been much strict mention of what happened to Black Mesa. Unless I'm very much mistaken, I don't think anyone talked about the fate of Black Mesa. Because if they did, the fact that it was blown up by a thermonuclear warhead would not go unmentioned. That kind of detail doesn't tend to get missed.

When you beat the game, look at the keyboard on the title screen - the letters A, D, R, I, N, S, H, E, and P are highlighted.
I'm pretty certain, though, it was just a response to people who thought Shepard was going to be the protagonist of Portal due to the acronym for the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device - the ASHPD.

Well I found the quote that I was thinking of earlier, it kinda explains the Blue Shift thing
Hi, Daniel, I won't be able to clear up much. It was a deliberate decision to have Gearbox never call him Barney in Blue Shift, only Calhoun. Raising the Bar is not a game, so material is presented differently there; manifestations differ in every medium. Gearbox took our Barney and did their own best version, but I'm not sure that Barney is the same Barney I'm picturing when I picture Valve's Barney. In the time BS was created, there were many Barneys. Only gradually have the redundant creature and character types slowly settled into iconic individuals...it's an ongoing process. Gearbox did what was right for their games. Even though they had feedback and guidance from us, they didn't always listen to it, and they steered by their own lights, etc., etc. I wasn't very close to the creation of the expansion packs, and much more concerned with how to move the story forward and open up the universe; so I only take the games created by Valve into consideration when I am working on the story...there are more than enough potential contradictions in our own designs without me worrying about contradictions in the inventions of other developers who were not part of our initial creative meetings. I know this is confusing to fans; it's partly a byproduct of the way expansion packs were created, the way they were packaged and published, and also I was very new to this whole concept at the time. It never occurred to me that large chunks of the story would be taken out of our hands, changes made beyond our control, and then have the stuff handed back with some odd unexpected kinks in it. So try not to worry about it, and simply do my best with material directly in my control. However, as to your last question, There was pressure on us to set Half-Life 2 at Black Mesa, which a lot of us felt would be creative death; it was important to break new ground. Nuking Black Mesa was a good way to ensure that we had a way to avoid setting Half-Life 2 there. You might say I gave the G-Man his orders. The whole issue of canon is something the fans came up with. I guess you will be able to identify as canon those story elements we continue to build on and develop and mention repeatedly as the story progresses. Others might fall by the wayside once they've served their purpose. Couldn't you say the same of us all?
Marc Laidlaw
So I was wrong he never said that its not canon for sure. So we may see Sherard in the future . Anyway, I'll try to stop derailing this thread now.
It goes in this order:
GTAIV
Mercs 2
Turok
LittleBigPlanet, once I get the cash for a PS3
WoW on consoles, there were rumors about a year ago that this was going to happen....hype for it kind of died.
There's some weird FPS games that I know very little about but am really keen on.
The Crossing from Arkane Studio
I'm not really too keen on the crossplay aspect of it, I don't think any game with less than a stellar multiplayer component is going to have much of an audience going into 2008, but these are the guys behind Dark Messiah, and if there's one thing they know how to do, it's to make you feel a part of the game world.
Mirror's Edge from DICE
The idea of wrenching away the FPS from the shooter and concentrating on the person sounds like a brilliant move in this parkour inspired adventure. Also, a sexy female lead is always a plus.
Borderlands from Gearbox Software
Four player co-op, guns and vehicles. I don't really need to know anything more.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky from GSC Gameworld
All they need to do to create one of the most atmospheric and scary FPS games is to just iron out the bugs from the original. If they manage to add some of the things they dropped from the first game back in, this should be an amazing event. Hopefully it'll release early in the year.
and a not fps
Guildwars 2 from Arenanet
I really want to see what they can do with a bit more CPU and Graphics power at their disposal. The first game has some of the best art direction I've seen in gaming so I hope they continue with the style rather than jump on the ever popular WoWclone style.
Chances of it being released this year are more or less non-existent, but I'm still seriously, insanely looking forwards to how they finish the current story arc for Gordon. Not quite.. He kinda got tired of people pestering about specifics for whether the Gearbox stuff is canon or not and the repeatedly asking for clarifications, so Laidlaw basically said that Valve is not going outright say what is or isn't canon. Ultimately, their stance is that if they, at some point, decide there's something useful to go back to in the Gearbox stuff, then they will. If they decide they want to overwrite or do something that invalidates something from the Gearbox stuff, then they will.

The nuke idea was Valve's. One of the few areas where they specifically had Gearbox do something rather than Gearbox do their own thing. As for Barney, Laidlaw has stated that he's an amalgam of all the various Barney's from Black Mesa. (the Calhoun from Blue Shift never offered Gordon a beer, for example.)
But I suppose you already knew that thanks to katka's post
Really, where was this nod? I must have missed it when I played through.
In Portal, Chell used the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device.
ASHPD. A SHPD. A Shephard. Adrian Shephard.
EDIT: Beated so hard. So very, very hard.
I'm still of the mind that it was a random coincidence rather than an intentional easter egg. I doubt the Portal team cared enough about an expansion of dubious canonicity to name the Portal gun something that has those specific initials. Especially since it's never referred to by those initials, ever. (At least that I remember.)
Anywho, back to the topic of this thread.
My primary game that I'm looking foward to is Spore. End of story. I plan on wasting countless hours on that little beauty, slowing building a galactic empire.
The other two that I'm drooling for are StarCraft II and Half-Life 2: Episode 3. There are other games I'm looking forward to and others I'm interested in and will be seeing how they turn out; but those three are my absolutely most anticipated.
Oddly enough, despite my love for Wii, and my all-around Nintendo fanboyism, I'm only moderately interested in Brawl. I'll give it a rent when it comes out, but I will not be in a rush to do so.
On the other hand, No More Heroes? Frothing demand, etc. etc. Its kinda sad, I can't think of any other Wii games off the top of my head that I would be looking forward to.
For the PS3, like pretty much everyone else, I'm waiting on MGS4, LBP, and DMC4.
Is there anything big planned for Wii or DS in the next 6 months (aside from Brawl)?
I really want to see what they can do with a bit more CPU and Graphics power at their disposal. The first game has some of the best art direction I've seen in gaming so I hope they continue with the style rather than jump on the ever popular WoWclone style.
The terrain sure was pretty, but the characters? Standard anime fare. Pretty boy dudes and Anorexic chicks.
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to seeing what Bethesda does with Fallout 3.
Posts
Otherwise Super Smash Brawl and GTA IV
I don't like to look too far ahead.

Fortunately, we all get to look forward to a crapload of fucking promising games, so:
GTAIV
Alone in the Dark
Resident Evil 5
Brütal Legend
Prototype
Mafia 2 (first one was teh awesome)
Force Unleashed
Age of Conan
Oh yea, and Wrat of the Lich King is probably gonna have me visit WoW for a few months again once that's released.
It's freaking sega vs nintendo.

FUCKING SONIC VS MARIO
holy shit !!
After that Persona 3 and Spore.
Edit:
TSR.
Honestly, Persona 3's the one that I'm looking forward to the most.

But mostly right now I want LBP so bad.
Left 4 Dead
HL2: Ep 3 (not that this one is likely to make it out this year).
I doubt that Shepard will make an appearance. If I'm not mistaken Marc Laidlaw has said he doesn't consider Blue Shift or Opposing Force to be cannon. I'll see if I can find the exact quote.
In my 3DS: Super Smash Bros, AC New Leaf
Last game completed: Steamworld Dig

I'm not sure what else really. GTAIV i suppose. Quite looking forward to Empire: Total War. Galleon fighting ftw!
Duke Nukem Forever. Ya, that's right.
The mob rules!
Keep dreaming. ;-)
And starCraft II, whenever that may be.

Yes, i'm so very bitter.
---
I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
Duke Nukem Forever
Final Fantasy XIII
I'd put Metal Gear Solid 4 on there if I had played through the prequels I own now.
Frontier need to do something bloody spectacular. I've been waiting for this longer than most people have lived.
Starcraft 2
Duke Nukem Forever
Half Life 2: Episode 3
Mafia 2
