I recently got over mono (about 2 weeks ago the symptoms started going away and I was simply tired. I suppose I did not change my sleep habits as I felt pretty okay. Well yesterday I started developing the same symptoms as when the worst of my mono kicked in. Is this known to happen or am I more likely to have something else?
I feel like death. My whole body hurts, I have a pounding headache, and I can't sleep because my throat hurts so bad, and fuck getting a lot of food down, its like everything is made of razor blades. I've never been this sick before, and I've been VERY sick before. Doctor now or is this just Mono: The Sequel?
What Thinatos said. Mono's a bitch because it stays in your bloodstream permanently; if you got run down for some reason, it probably took advantage and resurfaced. Or you just didn't give yourself enough time to heal, one of the two.
2 weeks of intense symptoms, 2 weeks with just tiredness. Now I seem to be back at full symptoms.
A second question if anyone is so kind:
I am starting class at my uni tommrow after winter break, but I cant really even leave the room without feeling like I'm going to pass out. Oh and my spleen hurts again. Do I go to class or not? I've already payed and whatnot and it seems like a lot of trouble to drop the class.
Doctor! Mono sucks terribly. I'd start feeling better and then as soon as I got like an hour less sleep than my body wanted, back to the flu-y symptoms.
Email your academic advisor and see what he or she says about class, too. You may be able to get a medical withdrawal where they give you your money back; that might be the best thing for you.
The way I beat mono was sleeping 12 hours a day (instead of my usual 7-9 at the time). It wasn't easy with all the school I had to do at the time...basically my life was school and sleep and nothing else for a month or two.
Oh, and you probably have strep throat. It is very common with mono (I had it) and you pretty much have to get antibiotics from the doctor or it won't go away. The good news is you'll be pain free about a day after you start taking them.
As has been said, mono never leaves your system. It is also possible, though rare, to have a relapse years later. Do your classmates a favor and stay away. Going in when you are actively capable of passing it around is pretty damn thoughtless. It isn't like you are passing a cold around. It is easy to develop multiple serious infections when you have mono. You could potentially make someone seriously ill.
Go to the doctor. You can be tested for it - assuming you have it then your uni will probably be ok with you not being about. Not that a doctor can actually do anything useful beyond that.
When I had mono, it lasted for about six months. Like imperial6, I slept around 12 hours per night, so pretty much all I did while I was awake was commute and work.

You weren't totally over it. Mono lasts for at least a month on average. I know this because I've had it twice. There are three strands floating around. Getting one will give you protection from that one strand for an average of about seven years. I got one in middle school, and the other in college, so I'm still waiting to catch the third.
Also, going to the doctor will net you some nice meds, but realize there isn't really a "cure" for mono. You just have to let it run through your system and get a ton of sleep.
I have had mono and sounds like you thought you were done but you aren't. Mono last at least a month, mine lasted for 3 months. You must get a ton of sleep otherwise you are just going to screw yourself over.
You can get some antibiotics which will help a little bit from the doctor, but otherwise, just take it easy and sleep alot. Drink lots of fluids as well. Mono completely destroys your immune system for roughly 6 months to a year later, so it is VERY easy for you to catch something after you had mono.
Protip: Don't have sex when you have mono. It felt like my soul was drained by Shang Tsung, the ex-girlfriend.
Six months to get over mono?! Either I have a super immune system, or I had a weak strain of mono!
So, early last October I started feeling really horrible. After about a week of waking up in a pool of my own sweat, having the worst headache ever, and feeling like my head was constantly on fire, I finally went to the doctor. I got a blood test and the doc tells me it's mono. She said to rest and not do any physical activity so I don't rupture my spleen. I work overnights on the weekends (the job involves a lot of physical activity, too) so I was worried about being sick for weeks. I go home, sleep lots (seriously all day and night; not by choice), and drink plenty of water and OJ. By the weekend my fever went down and my headache would only manifest itself mildly every once in a while. I worked the weekend, still slept all day, and by the end of the next week all symptoms had faded out.
I probably only had mono for about 2.5 weeks. The worst of it was when it first started, and I hadn't yet gone to the doctor. If this had lingered for months, I have no idea what I would have done about school and work! For you people that had it so long, were you given any medication, or did they tell you all you can do is wait it out?

While it lasts for a couple months, the worst of the symptoms only last for a much shorter time. I only took a week off work when I caught mono a few years ago before getting right back to full time, and while I felt like absolute shit for the following week as well, I was just very tired for a month or two after that. As long as your job doesn't require you to spew bodily fluids every which way once the worst of the symptoms go away you're probably safe to go back to work.
Became ill with flu like symptoms, started to feel better, then got hit with a second wave - unfortunately for me the second wave hung on for months and i felt like death.
Put your feet up and relax - nobody is gonna ride your ass about having mono - its pretty serious. The thing you need most is rest and avoid heavy lifting or rough physical contact - I chose to ignore the doctors advice when I started to feel better and was greeted by a flurry of more problems. Jaundice/Liver problems are a very real possibility, so if you see your skin/eyes going yellow head to the doc.
If you find yourself in a lot of pain ask the doc for painkillers. My throat was so enflamed i couldnt swallow and my doctor was more than happy to give me something to take the edge off. Now is a good time to quit smoking if you need to do so, I managed to quit without feeling any difference whatsoever. Massive weight changes are also a real possibility so keep an eye out for that. I began at 150, dropped to 130, up to 170 from inactivity/quitting smoking, down to 120 then finally back to my starting weight of 150 after about 3 months - all this from a guy who's weight hasnt changed more than 5 pounds in the last 2 years.
When you start to feel better, continue to take it easy for a solid month - your body needs the time to mend.
Turns out I still am in the 'throws' of mono, but I also caught Strep.
My doc said he can't tell (chicken or egg thing) which caused which but both mono and strep are back in full force, I am now taking pennecillin and the strep should clear up in a few days, the mono, well we all know how that goes.
This is by far the sickest I have ever been, I had an IV in me all day at the hospital and I'm full of painkillers (no complaints here about that). I'm finally back in my dorm and I have a few friends taking care of me.
Thanks for all the advice guys, one more Q though:
I seem to be very constipated from the painkillers, any ideas about what to do? I have bad feelings a tallboy is going to be jettisoned from my anus in the up and coming days.

Go and speak to a pharmacist/your doctor about this. They might be able to give you laxatives, or suggest different painkillers, or whatever.
He gave you penicillin with mono? That's probably going to bring you out in a big rash.
Really? Why's that happen?
No idea, but it's one of the diagnostics doctors over here use. If you're ill and penicillin gives you a rash, it's mono (or glandular fever as it's called here)

Try some over the counter Imodium AD. Works wonders for constipation.

That seems odd. I'm allergic to penicillin, and that is the reaction I get. It looks like german measles.

Yeah, when I had mono they didn't give me anything, I just laid on the couch and was told to load up on vitamin c every day

they gave him the penicillin for the Strep. Strep won't go away without antibiotics, so it's either get a rash and get rid of strep, or live with both mono and strep for a long time.
Imodium AD for constipation?
Are you kidding me? Immodium AD is for diarrhea.
Eat some prunes, anything with some high fiber and you should be fine.
Most importantly drink lots of water, that will keep you alright.
Last thing you should do right now if you are laid up is take a laxative. If they hooked you up to an IV it was becuase you already were quite hypotensive (dehydrated), that last thing you want to do is take a medication that dumps all your water into your bowels so you get dehydrated again.
Drink water, eat fiber (if you can) and you'll be fine.
Edit: Oh if you happen to live in Minneapolis by chance, hit up the U of M, we just started a study for a Mono anti-viral (that works!...from the looks of it).

Indeed, but there are other antibiotics that would kill the strep without the weird mono-amoxicillin/ampicillin rash.

Odds are, you weren't totally over it, overdid yourself in your assumption that you'd "recovered," and let the infection come back full strength.

Might be worth going to your doctor, just to make sure it is a relapse.

Yes. But you don't necessarily get strep throat. And it won't help shift the mono any quicker either.

There isn't any antiviral medication for the mono itself, so I just had to wait it out. It was pretty lame.
