PORTAL WONCLICK HERE TO JUMP TO THE PRETTY COLOR-CODED FULL RESULTS
So for the last few years I've been hosting this
Game of the Year poll for the users of some forums I read. There are a
lot of GOTY polls out there, but this one I think is kind of special. Most polls, you're given a list of four or five options and you're asked to pick the one you liked best. This poll, people are given a list of a couple of
hundred options, consisting of every new game released in the previous year-- and asked to rate their top ten or twenty.
This does a few interesting things. First off, we get to see all the information about what people's second, third etc choices are. Second off, because the second, third etc choices count, people are more likely to vote for the game they want to win, rather than the game they think is likely to win-- they're less likely to engage in "strategic voting". Finally, because we have this information, we're actually able to provide somewhat reasonable rankings for something like the top hundred or so games of last year.
The full results-- showing the exact number of voters who ranked each game first, second, third place etc-- can be found
here. In the meantime, the final results were:
1. Portal (9532) *** GAME OF THE YEAR ***
2. Bioshock (8004)
3. Super Mario Galaxy (7968)
4. Mass Effect (5874)
5. Team Fortress 2 (5256)
6. Call of Duty 4 (5051)
7. Halo 3 (4848)

Thanks if you voted, and some more elaborate analysis of the results (plus an explanation of the scores) can be found below.

ALTERNATE SCORING METHODS
The rankings listed above are based on an approximation of Condorcet voting. In my pseudo-Condorcet approximation, each vote cast for a game gives that game a certain number of points. If someone ranks a game #1, that game gets 20 points. If they rank it #2, the game gets 19 points. If they rank it #3 the game gets 18 points... and so on. I have a script that checks a couple of alternate ways of ranking the same data, though.
For example, if we rank games only by the number of first post votes they got, we get a slightly different list:
First Past the Post
1. Portal (176 first-place votes)
2. Super Mario Galaxy (170)
3. Mass Effect (105)
4. Bioshock (88)
5. Rock Band (48)
6. Team Fortress 2 (44)
7. Call of Duty 4 (39)
8. Halo 3 (27)
9. Persona (20)
10. World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade (14)
11. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (12)
12. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (10)
13. Half Life 2: Episode 2 (10)
14. Zack and Wiki (9)
15. Uncharted : Drakes Fortune (9)
16. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations (8)
17. Forza Motorsport 2 (7)
18. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (6)
19. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (6)
20. skate. (5)
Every year when we do this there's some game which scores horribly low in the objective rankings but gets a really startling proportion of first-place votes; this year the standout game in the "cult" department was Persona 3, which only got 78 votes at all, placing it at #25 in the overall rankings-- but 20 of those votes ranked it in first place, putting it in ninth place above.
I also did two more ways of sorting the rankings: an "approval" vote, where nothing is counted except the number of votes a game received (i.e. a first-place and a twentieth-place ranking count the same-- all the matters is if the game was on someone's list); and an instant runoff vote. Almost every time I've ever done this the Instant Runoff and pseudo-Condorcet rankings have been almost the same, but this time they were actually kind of different. Your eyes are probably starting to glaze over at this point, so I bolded the places where these two votes differ from the normal rankings:
Approval
1. Portal (537)
2. Bioshock (473)
3. Super Mario Galaxy (445)
4. Mass Effect (336)
5. Team Fortress 2 (322)

20. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of ChernobylFINALLY: PER-FORUM BREAKDOWNS
As mentioned before, this poll mostly exists for a handful of video game forums where some people I know post. This year, I decided to actually run some extra results, in each case counting only those voters who-- as far as one could tell from looking at the logs-- had come to the poll from one particular forum or other. Meanwhile, as coincidence would have it, a few days into the vote one of the posts from my blog-- where I had also posted about the poll-- got linked by Digg, and as far as I can tell from the logs a group of the Digg users actually clicked over to the next post and voted in the poll.
So, here you have it-- these numbers aren't totally accurate because my logging method is not entirely trustworthy, but here's an approximate by-forum breakdown of these results. Links go to color-coded full listings.

Great job to everyone who voted, and a HUGE thank you to mcc for having put this together for yet another great year.
Whoops.

...So when Persona 3: FES comes out can we put it on the list all over again? I mean Burning Crusade's on there.
It's completely public vote, so not only is it straight from the consumers themselves but also more votes all around so the final result is a better medium. This is pretty much the best way to dictate certain awards like game of the year on the various platforms.
GameSpy calls their awards "Gamer's choice"....although we obviously don't know which "gamers" they're taking into account
I preferred SMG this year, but be damned if Portal wasn't awesome as well.
I think a Game of the Year poll, by nature, is going to be in part grading which games more people played. You can never, ever correct for this, not when you have 213 options. The inaccessiblity of PS3 games is just a special case of a general problem where more people had access to Bioshock than Super Mario Galaxy, more people played Phantom Hourglass than Hotel Dusk, and me and AgentFlit are the only two people in the entire world who played "Passage".
Perhaps one interesting thing to measure here would be the game with the highest ratio of Sales : Placement-on-'top-208'-list?
EDIT: Or maybe lowest. I'm tired.
Well, it doesn't just apply to console exclusives that are hard to find, but also multiplatform games which are almost too easy to stumble upon like GH3 and CoD4. Again, this list doesn't speak exclusively to popularity of favoritism of games but also to that of platforms themselves and publishing/distribution practices.
Regardless, if someone bought Bioshock, they bought the game because they damn well liked it or expected to enjoy it enough to lay down $60, not because they snort windows and shit red rings.
Indeed, there's a LOT of great and telling information that comes from a vote like this, and at worst it's a great examination of community gaming habits and behaviours. What would IGN have voted if this was posted up there? What about 1up? Sony defence force? It's really fascinating.
Huzzah! 'My' games did well this year! Probably because I only really played the 'big' new titles, but all four in the top 20 is still thrilling stuff.
Roll on next year, I say.
No Zack and Wiki in the top 20?
For shame guys, for shame.
(Also, I was amused, as I posted in the other thread, that Cruis'n ranked higher than Time Crisis 4 and Manhunt 2!)

Catastrophic burn.
Cheers for all the work mcc, the whole thing was a very interesting read.
Edit: I think Mr_Grinch is talking about the PA specific poll

I need to know who the other individual who voted EDF2017 as #1 GOTY was.
Because I want to shake this person's hand.
You, mysterious sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.
Also, EDF! EDF! EDF!
I'm surprised by this. Happily I might add. The day a PC exclusive that didn't get a lot of hype before hand beats out a Super-hyped PS2 release is always an interesting one. Not speaking about the quality of the games here, just the platforms they were released to and the amount of publicity they received.
I was actually pretty pleased with STALKER's placement over-all. It beat out Crysis, and several other big PC exclusive releases such as Supreme Commander, Civ IV - Beyond the Sword, Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, Quake Wars and even Tomb Raider Anniversary which was multi-platform.
"You guys" referring to the Penny Arcade breakdown of the results, not the general results.
::Edit:: See, Lewiep got me!

As for the lists, it's a top 10 of the most popular games this year. The ordering is really irrelevant to me.
Also, I wonder how many complaints there will still be about certain games being in the top 10.. sad to see skate down at 33, but Crackdown at 17? Good work.
I wouldn't say that. But, I would say that playing Madden '08 was the exact same as '07. Tiger Woods '08 was shittier than '05. They're cool and addicting and all, but for GOTYs, people look for unique and amazing experiences.

That's why it's a shame (for me at least) to see skate down the list, because that was an awesome game.
I'm in that list. I got it purely for Portal. I generally don't like FPS games but after seeing Portal in action I had to have it.
I never got in to TF or HL2:Ep2 really, must have only put them on once or twice.
Also I believe you can buy Portal seperately on Steam can't you?
PSN: SirGrinchX
Oculus Rift: Sir_Grinch
Yeah, you can. The Orange Box is a much better deal even if you're only buying it for Ep2, Portal and TF2, but you can buy them all individually if you want.
That's part of the reason "The Orange Box" wasn't on the list. It's not a single game.
Though there are some other things that baffled me. Like Wii Play making the top 50. I mean, it was a fun little diversion, but I can't imagine it being entertaining longer than an afternoon. Beating out such games like Castlevania: Dracula X, The Red Star, and Geometry Wars?
You answered the second half of your post with the first half: high sales. MSRP remote + $10 game? Even if it's just a fun little diversion? Sure, why not? That's why I bought it. (I haven't even played it yet, and I didn't vote for it.)
