So I just found out that the Superdrive in my Macbook Pro no longer recognizes blank discs - CDs or DVDs. It reads discs fine (just installed the Orange Box like a week ago) but when I put a blank in, it chews on it for a while, then spits it out.
As luck would have it, this is about 13 months after i've purchased the computer. Obviously my 1-year warranty has just edged out the door. First, what the fuck. Second, is there any chance I'll get any leeway from Apple about fixing this? Third, if there's no leeway, does anyone know about how much it'll cost to get this fixed at an Apple store? Fourth, should I just suck it up and buy the $350 AppleCare extended warranty?

None.

The Genius Bar will try and diagnose the problem for free.

I am not sure whether AppleCare can be purchased retroactively after your original warranty expires. You would have to look into that.
Have you tried using other brands of blank discs? Sometimes my Powerbook has problems with certain brands. Try Verbatim ones.

With Applecare, technically you should purchase it within the one year window, but if you're nice enough at the store they haven't had a problem with applying it so soon after the year is up. At least they haven't when I go in, but your milage may vary

Thanks for the replies. Considering the fact that my situation doesn't call for me to burn CDs/DVDs very much, I'm considering just leaving it the way it is, hoping it doesn't break to the point where it can't read discs anymore, and just wait it out until it comes time for me to get a new laptop and just get the extended warranty with that.
