A lot. Enough so that you will never be waiting for a game ever.
It doesnt have a huge community on the PA forums though. A shame cause it's pretty awesome.
But to answer your question, I quick glance in the server window shows thousands playing. One thing to note, it very much has a European time zone, as most of the players currently are from Germany, Sweden etc. So be prepared for down time at American peak hours.
The game did okay in the states, and its pretty popular in Europe. I've never played without being able to find a server for a 8v8. Unlike UT3, which was dead on arrival.
My WiC tag is FreddyD. If I'm not playing just PM me and I'll hop in a server.
Ive never had one problem finding a full UT3 game. Ive been interested in this but I am burned out on RTS.
Well after Xmas UT3 went from 600 at peak hours to 1200 or so... I guess everyone got a new system, but generally it's dead compared to TF2.
Hmm just checked right now and 1977 people are playing UT3... Not bad.

It's not so much like an RTS, more so that it is like an FPS game where you control RTS units... (You can enter a game at any stage of a match as well)

Right, because like people weren't busy with the Orange Box, Halo 3, and Mass Effect when it was released. It's different now as there are servers open everywhere.
I did make the game on thread hoping to get some action going but I have some shit ATM that is keeping me from staying on the computer for hours on end.
I just got a friend into this recently. Anyone know if theres a way to create a server that just 2 people can play in? I tried doing this but my friend couldn't see my game in the server browser. When I try to invite him via the Friends List while I was in the game he was still unable to join.

That's still pretty pathetic considering how popular UT and UT2k3/UT2k4 were after their releases.

On thing to consider is that you'll have to forward the appropriate ports if you're behind a router. When I created a private game for my friend to join in, I just set my router's static NAT to temporarily point to my machine (making all unsolicited incoming connections go to my computer), because I'm super lazy.

Apparently there's a piece of the fall of communism inside.
