Four 3D Zeldas in 48 Hours and other discussions about speed runs

ThetherooThetheroo Registered User regular
edited January 2008 in Games and Technology
Cameronbanga.com is currently attempting to complete Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess in 48 hours. As I write this they are currently in the Water temple of Majora's Mask, having started at 5 PM CST the previous day.

Seriously, this takes some extreme dedication to slog through. Even if its a team of 5, it's still pretty dang impressive and I for one wish them luck.

They are apparantly now taking donations for pizza money, and any money left over is being donated to Child's Play.

12:19 PM CST- Water Temple in MM down.

Twelve hours for each game? Hm.

OoT, MM and TP I can handle. WW's triforce quest I'm not sure.

If you have a walkthrough I cannot imagine it taking long. The treasure hunt section actually feels a lot longer than it is.

They mentioned on the video that a speed run of WW can take only 9-10 hours.

Yeah...I mean, I played Wind Waker without a walkthrough and I think I tallied up like 22 hours total before the final encounter (which I still haven't beaten), though the triforce quest felt like 50 itself. I enjoyed the treasure hunting and sailing overall, but it FEELS long regardless.

The only thing is, are Zeldas really conducive to speed runs? I mean, speed runs are possible, sure, I'm not disputing that, but I wonder what the point is. A large part of Zelda's draw is the exploration; the mindless meandering around a game world discovering everything in all its nooks and crannies.

I tried to do this before, except with Majora's Mask alone.

It completely ruined the game for me. For the first time ever Zelda became a chore to play . I didn't have time to just explore and have fun. I never got the chance to rediscover some of the details that make Zelda games special.

I hope these guys knew what they're getting into.

Didn't they force you to get the Heart Containers in ALttP? Kinda puts a damper on that plan if true.

Some people (such as myself) really enjoy trying to get through games as fast as possible, and for me, that happens after playing it and exploring and all that (you have to know the game front to back to do a speed run, anyway).

Nice to know they're doing this for charity, though. :)

Seriously, I just keep watching even though they're so bad at Majora's Mask. It's killing me. Of course, they're also probably pretty tired, so I guess I can cut them some slack. :)

So when do we think they'll get done with Majora's? I figure about 2 hours from now, since Majora's going to obliterate them after all the problems they just had with those skeletons. I honestly don't see them getting this done by 5 pm CST, since they're around 23 hours left at this point and haven't gotten to Wind Waker yet. The Triforce quest is really going to destroy them. Simply collecting all the rupees they'll need to translate the maps is going to slow them down a heck of a lot.

Still, completely awesome, and completely preventing me from being productive.

I've been watching them on and off over the last day. It's strangely addicting for reasons I can't really figure out.

I agree, watching them with Majora's Mask is totally frustrating. I thought they were in good shape after Ocarina of Time, but they've slowed way down. Either way, they said they'll finish all four games even if it takes them longer, so it's just a matter of whether they can stay up long enough.

I'm not sure they'll be able to make it at this point.

Am I reading the update on the blog wrong, or did they not actually complete MM?

If they didn't, I really don't think they have any slim chance they might of been clinging to anymore.

They got near the end, then got frustrated with the freezing and decided to come back to it after completing the WW and TP.

At least they're getting money for Childs Play.

I'm confused. Are they playing off ROMs or something? Why the hell do they need to?

I was watching earlier and they were hoping someone from Nintendo would see it and send them cool stuff. But I find it hard that anyone from Nintendo would condone them playing off rips of the game.

Depends on the game. I mean, yeah, some games you can do stupid-short runs through.

Other games, though, even a perfect run will be multiple hours.

....Man, I wish I had the attention span to do speed runs. They're awesome, but I get bored with games after just two, maybe three runthroughs. :(
