Ok, so I posted a thread a little while ago tracking down a game. We tracked it down (thanks for the help everyone!) and now I have a virtual copy of the game (its abandonware, thank goodness).
Problem: I can't get it to run. The file is a dos based program, so I grabbed dos box, and that still dikdn't help me. I'm not the most tech savvy person, so any help would be appreciated. The link below is where I got the game from, in case you're interested in seeing all the file types.
After searching for about 3 years for this game, and now have it, but not be able to play it, is torture. I'd appreciate any help you could give me at all.
I'm 100% what to do with Dosbox in this circumstance. I tried mounting it (chuckle) but that didn't work. If you could give me an idea what I'm doing wrong, I'll correct it straight away. A suggestion someone gave me was to burn it to a CD?
It's been a good long while since I've fooled with DOSBox. This might help, and if the game's really abandonware you can just link me to it and I'll see if I can get it to run.
The link I posted in the OP (http://oldgamersclan.net/wiki//index...inies_%28PC%29) is where I found the game. If you click the "oldgamersclan.net" link below the cover art and the screen shots, you will be able to download this game.
It appears I was doing everything wrong with Dosbox. I would still appreciate you having a look at it, and seeing if you can get it to work, but otherwise, I think I'm going to be tooling around with it later tonight....
I'm not sure how far you've gotten so I'll just start from the beginning. The file you download has a bunch of zip files. The first zip file, Millenia1.zip, contains a .ARJ file. Extract this .ARJ file, then open it up with something like WinRAR or 7-Zip. Inside the ARJ is the install folder for Millenia. Stick that somewhere. Open up DOSBox and type mount c c:\wherever you stuck the millenia folder. Now type "c:" and then "cd millenia". Now you're in the millenia folder. You can run setup.bat or _setup.exe for kicks to see if you can get the sound to work (I think DirectSound worked by default for me). This is where I'm stuck, though; I can't find any exe that runs the actual game. I believe to run it you've gotta do some sort of thing with CDEmu which I don't have time to figure out right now (lunch!). The readme helpfully refers me to the manual for information about installing it.
The game manual is pending approval at replacementdocs, and I've requested an expedited approval process which will hopefully result in the manual appearing online. Whether that would help or not is questionable; I think the answer lies with CDEmu. I will conduct more investigation when time permits.
Edit: Well, the manual got uploaded (<3 Replacementdocs) but all it says is to type "Install" at the DOS prompt to install. This does not work, at least not when I try it. I'm thinking someone smarter than me needs to figure out this CD emulation thing.
Well, heres where I got with the link you gave me...... I PLAYED THE GAME!
Essentially, mount the game and all that junk using DOSbox, after which, make it run the 'Mil' program. Admittedly, I tried another tact, by burning the game to disc, leaving the dic in the drive, but running everything from my HD, but I very much doubt that had any affect on it.
Thanks for the help, and hopefully you can enjoy this complex title!
p.s I've restarted 3 times so far, as I keep killing my species. I'm starting to think using the drop pod and shooting things is a bad idea.....
