"Part of the reason I quit World of Warcraft before was that my son had been born, and I didn't have the time or the money to play it."
I really find that one hard to believe. I struggle paying off two cars, rent, bills and have a fiance and son yet still have money spare to play wow or whatever I want to play.
It may be that he just felt he had better things to be spending it on than WoW. There are lots of them. Not necessarily that he was struggling financially.

different people have different economic priorities. the cost of living where Tycho lives might be higher than where you are.
Well, this has got me thinking, how much money does PA make a year, as a business? And what share of that do Gabe and Tycho receive?
Didn't that wired article say somewhere in the low 7-ish figures?
They're fairly well off, apparently.
EDIT: here it is
Today, Penny Arcade Inc. makes almost half of its money from ads and more than a third from merchandising. (Holkins and Krahulik refuse to disclose revenue, but it's probably safe to say it's in the low seven figures.) Part of that comes from a lucrative sideline making ads for game publishers, including Ubisoft, Vivendi, and Blizzard. "If we like a game, we can offer lots of cool services," Holkins says. He plays an MP3 of a song he's created using a Nintendo DS game called Jam Sessions, which simulates an acoustic guitar. It's a hilarious, surprisingly melancholy ode to a murdered videogame character, and about the best advertisement for the guitar game imaginable.
That's not a bad return. And well I figured some accounting stuff might released, but they're not exactly a publicly traded company. Are they even registered as a company?
I actually thought the same thing. I recall them being well off, so coming across that in the news post made me quirk my eyebrows a bit. I'm half surprised Blizzard doesn't give them infinite credits to their account, what with all the free advertising they got off them being huge fans.
But seeing as they make most of their money off advertisements, how high could their expenditures be?
They go through a lot of bandwidth, they rent office space and they employ multiple people. That stuff can add up quick. I doubt they're struggling to make ends meet or anything but they're not pocketing a cool million each year.

Even if they pay for their accounts, they could probably write it off.

Gabe said something about driving a Mercedes a while back. It may have been at PAX, but I don't think he was kidding.
Like I said, Tycho's kid was born quite a while back; it's likely that PA has picked up significantly in terms of advertising (and certainly merch) since then.

Like, you have reached this Brobdingnagian plateau of confusion and you wanted to make sure we knew?
Oooh, nice word usage. :^:
Damnit, I didn't want to use dictionary.com today.
Seriously, I hear a band called the Brobdingnagian Bards all the time but I have absolutly no clue what it means. I always thought it was a place.
it is a place, isn't it? The land of giants from Gulliver's travels.
so you know, it means big.
