Official: Factor 5 Back on Wii
Company president confirms that it's making at least one non-Virtual Console project for Nintendo's new system.
by Matt Casamassassasssinnassnanaina
US, January 14, 2008 - The maker of the hit GameCube series Rogue Squadron is back. In a phone conversation with IGN Wii this morning, company president Julian Eggebrecht confirmed that the studio is underway with at least one all-new Wii project -- and it's not a Virtual Console game. Beyond that confirmation, Eggebrecht was mum, but he did note that the new title would not simply re-use old Rogue Squadron tech; whatever it is, significantly updated or even completely new tech has been developed to help accommodate it.
Factor 5's previous title, Lair, released for PlayStation 3 to mixed reviews. However, it is worth noting that the developer is intimately familiar with the GameCube hardware, whose technology extends to Wii. Not only did Factor 5 work with Nintendo to develop GameCube's audio solution, but it pushed the console harder on a graphics level than just about every other studio, Nintendo included. Bearing that in mind, fans can rest assured that whatever the company's new Wii game is, it's a safe bet that it'll look good and push the hardware.
At one time, Factor 5 was pegged to develop a sequel to Pilot Wings for the then-codenamed Revolution. Nintendo even went so far as to list the San Rafael-based studio as a "partner" in its official E3 presentation. Since that time, though, the company has been busy with the PS3-exclusive Lair and thus, work on any Pilot Wings sequel is thought to have been halted or cancelled altogether. Incidentally, IGN believes Factor 5's Wii title is an altogether different beast.
We'll have much more on the project as information becomes available. For now, though, Nintendo fans who loved the Rogue Squadron games should be happy to know that one of GameCube's best contributors is now lending its support to Wii.
Ace news. I've not played Lair, but the Rouge Squadron games were top notch (hell, Rogue Leader would probably be one of the better Wii games around were it released on it today)
So, another waggle-fest minigames compilation.
Update -
Sources tell Kombo that the ex-Nintendo developer is developing a ground-up Kid Icarus sequel for Wii.
January 20, 2008
Nintendo and ex-Nintendo developer Factor 5 might have temporarily broken up, giving the developer just enough time to develop and release its dragon-themed shooter exclusively on Sony's PlayStation 3, but last week, news hit the Internet that the two companies are once again working together. According to reports last week, Factor 5 is developing an exclusive game for Nintendo's latest home console, Wii.
Kombo has learned from a credible source that said Wii game is in fact a new installment in Nintendo's cherished Kid Icarus franchise. According to sources, Factor 5's Kid Icarus title is being developed ground-up for Wii. It will not use one of the developer's previous GameCube graphics engines. Unfortunately, at this time, no other details have been provided to us for publish.
It has been over twenty years since the gaming world was first introduced to Kid Icarus, with the original releasing in 1986 for NES. The 2D sidescroller is uniquely its own, but its design enjoys recognizable influences from three of Nintendo's biggest franchises: Mario, Metroid and Zelda.
Kombo has fired off e-mails to Nintendo and Factor 5 for comment on this rumor. Until we have more to report, please consider this story just that: a rumor.
This would be pretty hot. But it is also a pretty obvious rumour to come up with, so don't get your hopes up until we get a confirmation.

Still, good news!

I lol'd
Right now thought I have mixed feelings. Should I be happy that the guys who made Rogue Squadron are making a Wii game or should I be sad that the guys who made Lair are making a Wii game?
It is a fairly simple word, and besides, "rouge" doesn't sound anything like it

It's got the exact same menu interface with choosing your missions with the little video previews and the narrator talking about the mission and ugggghhhh

At least they made it a little different.
They took out all the quality.
Ohhhhhhhhh
Seriously, when I mistype stuff, I am man enough to own up to it/ninja edit.
iirc, it was from an old photoshop thread, someone edited the boxart from Rogue Squadron to Rouge Squadron, and put shedloads of makeup on the guy on the cover. Many lolz were had.
What are you trying to troll here, or are you blind and dumb as hell?
Hopefully they'll also work on middleware again. I think this is what I'm supposed to say as a registered Nintendo Fanboy. Let me check the manual.
What's this?
I'm supposed to like RS games and not like Lair? I can't just dislike both?
Fine.
The amazing power of the Star Wars license makes Rogue Squadron an unparallelled achievement of the Nintendo Gamecube, while Lair is a shiity poorly done waggle fest that controls like they slapped dragon wings on the side of a festering whale.
Pilot Wings is good too.
Basically, I want Hitman In Space.
"Mixed"? I think somebody's been slightly "enhancing" the truth here.
Oh and Xenogears?
Truer words cannot be spoken.
http://wii.ign.com/articles/762/762984p1.html Maybe we will finally get a game that really pushes the Wii.
No. No. No. That game is an abomination of EU shenanigans and horrible horrible design that deviates from its precursor.
猿も木から落ちる
I don't think I understand this post.
There needs to be a Rogue squadron game set during the Thrawn crisis.
its a trap!.
Fix'd.
In fact, that's the problem with all the RS games. They are trying to be arcadey versions of X Wing/TIE Fighter, and they suck at it. Oh sure, some levels are awesome, usually when they try to capture the big battles of the movies. The Trench Run, the Battle of Endor, and I guess the Hoth level from RL are all fun to play because of their connections to the movies. The gameplay will try its best to ruin the experience, but fun can still be had. The rest of the levels though? No attachment to the movies and the shitty gameplay.
I will say though that Rebel Strike is worth buying cheap for one reason; co-op Rogue Leader. Co-op makes anything go down better.
I got confused by the wide array of subtitles in this series and was thinking of Rebel Strike.
猿も木から落ちる
Seriously.
The third one? Fucking atrocious, but Rogue Leader was pretty fucking awesome.
(The first one is still the best though.)
edit: ahh so we're all on the same page.
NO. NO NO NO. EU GO DIE.
猿も木から落ちる
Ok I guess we'll have...
The Trench Run
and
Hoth
and
The other death star
Yeah that'll be a fun game for the BAJILLIONTH TIME.
Thrawn would have some awesome battles to be flown, and unless you're playing the star wars games for the plot(Spoiler: Death star gets blown up when you blow it up), I can't see any reason that Thrawn could make for a worse game than, say, rebel strike.
The only problem is that if it was really set during Thrawn's invasion the game would need to be balls-to-the-wall hard, which would cut its sales somewhat.
Hell Rogue Squadron had some EU stuff, what with the World Devastators, V-wings, etc. And Rogue Leader had Derra IV, if I'm not mistaken, and some other stuff from EU.
Or did I fail my Geek-Acronym test?
Step 2: No getting out of the fucking ship, unless it's a 2 second interlude resulting in switching ships.
Step 3: ????
Step 4. Profit!
The EU is always involved, especially when it comes to Expanded Universe Star Wars.
or is it Extended?
Star Wars?
Extended?
Expanded?
Getting X-Wing to run in DOS???
EMS versus XMS all over again!
As long as they don't make you do the Commando missions at all.
