Short question: I just got a Macbook like... 5 days ago.
Do you guys think they'll let me return this and get a Macbook Air instead? i have all the packaging material still.
Probably not.
Why did you get a Macbook when you knew there was going to be a major Keynote coming up? You just don't do this, unless you don't care about the new stuff.
The Air looks sweet, but are you sure you want it? The first Macbooks had issues that needed to be ironed out, the Air probably won't be different. Plus, no optical drive, no removable battery. Don't get me wrong, I'd buy one, but there's still so much I'd miss, and I'd wait anyway.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

I carry my laptop everywhere so it's worth it for me for the reduced weight alone. 3lbs vs. 5lbs. That's pretty huge.
No removable battery, I couldn't care less. No removable drive is simply a minor inconvenience I can live with. I don't watch DVDs on my laptop, and for installing major software I can use my friend's external drive.
The restocking fee would be worth it when you take into account a) you won't get full retail price from ebay/craigslist and b) you have to deal with a much higher incidence of scammy people when you list laptops on eBay. Having to sit through a non-paying bidder waiting period in order to get your listing fees refunded isn't fun, when you're looking to offload something expensive ASAP.
Return it now if you really want an Air, and place a preorder today. more likely to get it when they're available. Personally, I'd suggest calling Apple tonight to confirm the return window, asking if you can return it w/o a fee due to the Air announcement, and sleeping on it for a day or two before deciding for sure.

This! My gf bought a MacBook about 6 months after launch, and that thing was a huge POS what with the random shutdowns and rebooting. It took a while for Apple to not only acknowledge the problem but also to fix it. The Air is even more of an engineering marvel than the MacBook, and I fully expect problems to arise very quickly. Every major Rev 1 Mac laptop has had problems.
Also, don't forget that eBay charges fees that'll probably come to nearly 15% anyway.
I went to the Apple store and talked to them. The hot girl working there said there is a 10% restocking fee, but that they'll give me a gift card to compensate because I'm buying an Air.
My Macbook battery died in a year. When your MacBook Air battery dies?
Bricked.
Also, no optical drive? No reformats.
Yeah, that's another good point. I couldn't boot from my recovery disc with an external USB CD drive on my old powerbook after my internal CD drive was damaged.

In any case, buying the first-gen of any product is a bad idea. Moreso even in apple's case. Look at their 1st gen products, the ipod, the macbook, the G5 they all had their specs and features upped and/or fixed within 6 months and cost the same price. They tend to have problems with new products and I don't doubt the Macbook Air is any exception.
But you seem to be swept up in the "MUST BUY APPLES NEW PRODUCT SO I CAN BE THE FIRST GUY ON THE BLOCK WITH IT" so if that's the case why are you even asking on this forum?
Sorry, I just work in an office where 3 people went out and bought macbook pros the first week they came out (two bought 4gb iphones) and all three of them were boned hard by apple not only in terms of quality but in terms of features as well. Had they waited 3 months even, they would have superior products.

PowerPC Macs couldn't boot from USB, whereas Intel Macs can, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Plus they say that the Air can boot off USB Drives (by talking about reformatting using the Apple USB Superdrive) in the About this new product video, so not a big deal

Yeah...for an extra $100. Another $30 if you want some good old fashioned Ethernet networking.
I like the idea of a thin, light laptop, but what if I'm on a plane and the battery dies? Well, let me swap the battery...oh wait...I cant. I'm out in the middle of nowhere and I need to use dial-up. Crap...need another dongle. Just seems counter productive.
Have you ever owned a macbook before? Or any laptop for that matter? These batteries don't last for ever. Not even close to forever.
I know. I've owned a Dell, and a Powerbook after that. It's not a big problem, as most of the time I carry the adapter with me.
The only time it was a problem was on planes, but now that there is the MagSafe Airline adapter, that's not a problem anymore.

Yeah, I owned a first gen iPod. It broke after a year.
Apple replaced it for free.

Now you're being a dick.
I asked if I could return my new Macbook and exchange it with an Air. The question was answered.

Look, I'm not a person who regularly finds himself in the middle of nowhere, and I've never had to use dial-up in the past 8 years. I carry my laptop to school everyday, and on the weekends I go to various coffee shops around the area with it to do work. This means that being light and not taking up much space in my bag is a big factor for me, so much so that it vastly outweighs the minor inconveniences of a lack of optical drive and replacement battery. Besides, a lot of my friends own USB optical drives anyway (and my school's lab lets us borrow stuff like that for free), so if I want to install something from a CD/DVD I can use theirs.
Anyway, I'm done here. I understand your concerns and thank you for them. I'll post pictures in the G&T subforum as requested when I get it.

Yes, so thats like 150+ dollars, down the drain.
You are better off selling it on Ebay.

A replacement battery costs $125 and is installed by apple for free.

I'm just saying why I wouldn't buy one in that state. It assumes a lot, and for a very select market I'm sure it's great, but for me it wouldn't work.
