I wrote up a post earlier but the forums crapped on me, but basically I wanted to ask:
- What do I look for in a good helmet? Good brands, specific suggestions?
- Same for goggles...
- Should I get wrist protection? What's good? Other kinds of protection?
I'd like some decent quality stuff, I figure since it's stuff that will protect me from harm.. and harm is bad.
I have no idea about brands or what to look for so I'll just tell you the gear I have (that has served me for 3 very active seasons and not crapped out on me yet).
I've got Dakine wristguards, they fit pretty easily under the gloves. Some gloves come with built-in wristguards but the ones I've seen aren't that great and cost a lot more than just wristguards and gloves separately.
I use Wilson volleyball kneepads, they're pretty boss. These are them:
I barely notice they're there, they're pretty soft, they warm your knees like a motherfucker (I've kneeled for like ten minutes on snow in those kneepads without getting cold) and they're pretty good at absorbing impact. I only used these because I already had them, but now I can't imagine going back to plastic kneepads with straps and shit, they're pretty clumsy.
Kneepads and wristguards are my only protection, aside from a helmet of course.
For a helmet, I've got a good Pro-Tec one that's served me well, though I haven't really taken any spills which would have resulted in head trauma since I got it.
I've got a pair of Smith goggles, nothing really that special about them, but they don't fog up at all which is really what you should look for.

I have ski stuff, so I can give semi-related advice... but really, unless you buy really cheap stuff, most good helmets should be useful for their intended purpose. I like mine mostly for non-safety issues (it's comfortable, and the ear flaps keep my ears/head really warm, which is good when I was mostly skiing in the northeast and it was f-ing cold). My helmet is actually a Boeri snowboard helmet, though I think it might be 5+ years old by now
Goggles I think depends a bit on where you'll be going - if it will usually be very sunny, then you might want a bit stronger protection, whereas the lighter ones are basically just protection for your eyes from the cold/snow.
Gonna also bump this with a question as to what color lens goggles I should get as the most all purpose... people say gold, yes? What about mirrored gold?
