I'm about to go on a month long trip. I'd like to get some insurance specifically for my laptop incase I blow it up or it gets stolen. Does anyone know any reputable companies offering such insurance? Or have any general advice?
Check and see if your home insurance offers "personal possessions" cover or similar (the usual wording is "Covers loss of, or damage to your personal possessions while away from the home). It's usually cheaper and more comprehensive than travel insurance for luggage and valuables. Note that it doesn't cover things like medical expenses or emergency accomodation, and check that it covers you in foreign countries.
Also, whatever insurance you get, make sure there aren't any limits that will affect you (most policies set a maximum amount of money you can claim for certain items), and that it isn't "indemnity" cover. Indemnity (as opposed to New-for-old) doesn't cover you for the replacement costs, only for the purchase price less a percentage deduction per year that the item is old, which means any money they pay you is unlikely to be enough to buy a new laptop.
Lastly, if you think it's likely that your laptop will get stolen or whatever, make sure you have any important data backed up (and not to an external hard drive that you carry around in the same bag).
