The Comics News Thread - Thread Title Updated for DouglasDanger!

Hey dudes, Geebs gave me the okay to start a general news thread. This is the thread to discuss the many news items that pop up concerning comics, many of which don't merit their own thread but are worth noting and talking about. We'll leave it up to your judgment as to what actually ought to be in its own thread, but I imagine most stuff in here will be stuff about talent coming onto books, new books, exclusivity deals, and the like. This should cut down on news getting posted in the Question thread and other non-related threads.

Anyway, I'll kick the thread off with this announcement, courtesy of Newsarama: Aaron Lopresti to pencil Wonder Woman. For anyone who has been reading Ms. Marvel the last couple years, this is really a no-brainer. Lopresti's got a talent for drawing hot chicks kicking ass, he's pretty good with technical drawings and expressions, and he's timely. Paired with a good writer, he's got the chops to do an extended run with consistently high quality. As sad as I was to see him leave Marvel, I'm glad he got this gig because it'll really play to his strengths. I may actually have to start reading Wonder Woman again.

When he dies, I hope they write "Worst Affirmative Action Hire, EVER" on his grave. His corpse should be trolled.

wow the top of her legs look weird. there should be creases in her wonder panties

And why do you always say, "I'm sad that he's leaving Marvel." or "I'm glad he's a Marvel exclusive."? I understand you read mostly Marvel, but the way you put it is like you just want DC (and other publishers) gone completely. (this is not a marvel vs dc statement)

Simone just started her run on WonderWoman (great so far), so you're in luck.

Keith: I read mostly Marvel, so a good creator working for or exclusive to Marvel is a good thing for me. An awesome creator leaving Marvel and becoming exclusive to DC isn't so good for me, as I read about 3 DC books. I guess I'll ramp down that rhetoric when exclusivity stops being a practice in the industry or when I stop reading mostly Marvel. And I have nothing against DC (quite the opposite, really), but I have much less invested in their properties, so you can understand why I'm less interested in creators going on or off their books. Now if Lopresti had been announced for GL or GLC, I probably would've been over the moon.

Funny enough, I started reading Wonder Woman on the strength of the Dodson's art. The scheduling problems were what caused me to stop buying it, but I'm still a big fan of the Dodsons.

Still, a hell of a nice boost for GL. DC's number two property for the month. This has been a case of a storyline/cross-over finishing in a stronger position than when it started.

Ultimates 3 got a shitload of hype, especially considering all the goodwill towards the first two series. I expect it to drop quite a bit for the next issue.

Looking over the numbers, it looks like a good showing for most of the books I read that month. Messiah Complex looks like it's a real hit.

Nah, my understanding is they got a good lead time on the miniseries in order to get all the issues out on time. I fully expect it to be done by April.

A new big title #1 is going to sell better than an event steeped in continuity most of the time.

Also, it is funny to see the Countdown numbers drop each and every week.

I dunno. I understand that exclusivity brings much desired stability for people in a relatively volatile field. They get healthcare benefits and the like as well as guaranteed work for a set number of years. That's not really a bad thing if you're a creator, especially since the contracts still allow you to work on other properties at any other publisher except the other of the big 2.

That's some interesting stuff from the Fraction interview. I didn't know he was doing YA Presents, so that actually makes me pretty happy. Also, I really ought to go get on the PWJ bandwagon, since the issues I've read so far have been good. Same with the Order, even though it's getting the can.

As of November it sold 29k. Which is pretty good for a new book, with an all new cast, and limited interaction with the Marvel Universe. But it probably isn't so good for a book with pretty high profile talent like Kitson and Fraction on it.

I'm kind of disappointed though. I was really looking forward to getting the trade, and for Marvel to cancel the series before I even got a chance to support it in my preferred format kind of sucks. Plus, to cancel it with only a handful of issues actually out just seems weird. Maybe they're hoping that the community will rally behind the book Manhunter-style or something.

In an earlier word balloons podcast he said he could probably do four monthly books (Casanova, PWJ, IIF and a fourth that became The Order). While I enjoy the book and right now hate all of you who don't read it with a burning passion, I hope it means he can do an Orson book or something equally pulpy.

Fraction wrote the Spectacular Spider-Man annual from last year, and it was terrific. He's listed as a writer on the "Divided We Stand" X-Men special, so I'm assuming we'll see him on an X-book at some point.

Well in the podcast he doesn't seem too broken up, so while I think that blows I'm not going to get upset or anything. Just savor what's left, and hope he is on an x-book.

Speaking of which, he mentioned that he's made a couple of proposals on an Orson book. I guess it's just too much AWESOME a month or something, because there is no other rational excuse.

The one-shots sounds a lot more likely.

Also, to get back to this being a general news thread and not just Iron Fist-wank: Fraction said the TPB for Seven Capital Cities of Heaven is going to be huge: IIF 8-14 (which is 34pgs), plus both Orson one-shots.
