Sorry i didn't know if this should go here or the moe's section, so if its in the wrong spot i'm sorry.
My computer hasn't worked for a few months now and i haven't gotten around to fixing it till now. It needed a new hard drive, so i ordered one from newegg. When it got here i realized i had ordered a SATA drive instead of an IDE drive. I had SATA power so i figured i could work with it. I went to a computer shop around me and i picked up a converter for my mobo IDE port so i could plug a SATA data into my hard drive. I plugged in all the cabels and made sure everything was right before i powered it on. When i turned it on and went to install windows it said it could not detect my hard drive. I went into BIOS and tried to get it to register the hard drive but it didn't.
So has anyone else gone through this? Is there something i'm doing wrong or am i just screwed? Is there no way to get a SATA hard drive to work on an IDE mobo?
Couldn't you get a SATA interface card?
I don't have any working knowledge of the SATA to PATA adapter but I imagine that even if does work properly you wouldn't be getting the improved transfer speed of the SATA device.
yeah the adapter has all of the cabels plugged in and the green light on it is on. Also i'm not really concerned with transfer speed, i just want a working computer.
What's the model and manufacturer of the device? The IDE port on the motherboard is the same as the IDE port that's on a hard drive but some of these converters are designed to convert the hard drive from IDE to SATA, not convert the IDE port on a motherboard to an SATA port.
Alright, i retured the adapter and got a pci card. It doesn't work either, the mobo does not register the HD. I went to the western digital site to get the driver for the HD and my computer wouldn't load those. At this point i'm really pissed off and the only solution i can see is to return the drive and see if the have IDE drives still.

You'll need the driver for the PCI card. During the Windows install (XP, I'm assuming), you'll have to hit F6 when you're prompted and then stick in a floppy disc with the drivers for the PCI card. It should work from there. You may even need to configure your BIOS to boot from the PCI card.

Do you think i'll have to get a pci slot adapter for it to register the HD?
