The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Today the Leafs announced that they are not going to renew their contract with GM John Ferguson, and that he will be relieved of his duties as of today. Cliff Fletcher will take his place as interim GM until a permanent GM/President can be found. He will also be part of a committee responsible for finding such a person.
Cliff Fletcher was the Toronto GM from 1991 to 1997, and twice led the Leafs to the conference finals. He is also a member of the Hall of Fame.
I know change is great, especially for the Leafs right now, but what can he be expected to do in such a short time period? Especially with the limited power he his given resulting from the particularly stupid structure of the organization?
I honestly think the Leafs need to go into a full blown rebuilding mode, starting with upper management all the way down to the players. Firing JFJ is just Peddie and Tenenbaum getting a scapegoat, even though I agree with the firing: you can't have a long term plan when you're trying to save your job year after year.
Get rid of Peddie and Tenenbaum, and get people in there who aren't constantly at odds with each other and the board of directors.
Keep Maurice. The "building younger players up" part he's good at. Look what he did with Carolina.
Trade Mats Sundin. I love Mats and own two of his jerseys, but we've gotta make a statement and convincing him to be traded would do just that. If we can have a wholesale fire sale and get picks and prospects back, then that's fine.
The support and money will be there year after year regardless. It's a double-edged sword. You don't need to have a good time to earn money in the case of the Leafs. At the same time, you don't need to have a good team year after year to stay afloat. So they can afford to go into a rebuilding mode for 2-3 years.
Look at the Flyers. They've spent the last 2 years rebuilding and now they're a competitive team again. Toronto needs to do the same.
I completely agree with the rebuilding part, top-won. Peddie especially needs to go. It's kind of hard to get rid of Tenenbaum though, given he basically owns the team.
My roommate is a dedicated Leafs fan, and even though I enjoy teasing him occasionally about the Leafs losing, I really really would like to see them become a competitive team again. That would make 6/6 Canadian teams being relatively competitive.
I also agree that Sundin needs to go, he's a really great player, but I think too much of the rest of the team is trying to rely on him to do their job, and he just isnt up to carrying the entire team anymore.

hahahaha dumb. they need to fire the coach first, then maybe the GM.
hahahaha dumb. they need to fire the coach first, then maybe the GM.
Why do they need to fire the coach? What they need to do is set their organization up so that they have a smart GM, and give him the power to make things happen. The owners, Peddie and Tenenbaum in particular, need to be hands-off.
Once we do that, we can get Scotty Bowman as GM. He'll make things happen.
You guys won't get Scotty Bowman. Isn't he like 75 years old? Anyway, he's still on the advisory committee for the Red Wings - don't think he'd want to leave Detroit for Toronto.
As far as Mats Sundin goes, trade him to us Canucks. We need the offense, and if we get something going, we just might bring the Cup back to Canada.
Scotty is done coaching and said as much when he retired. He's very involved in our organization and unless he's been training someone for a very long time, I doubt Ken Holland is about to let him go.

Oh great, more "bring the Cup back" crap. Can we move past this and just let the best team win, regardless of nationality? People that keep saying "bring the Cup back" just make me actively root against Canadian teams.

Actually, Scotty has said outright that he would take the job if he was given complete control. Thats why I said what I did.
Didn't I read in an interview that Bowman mentioned he would have taken a job with the Leafs but they didn't want to give him full control? Thus, no deal. Leafs fans everywhere groan.
Seriously, I know the Leafs are Canada's darling but it's time to blow it up and rebuild. Sundin, while still great, needs to be traded for youth and picks. They can negotiate with a cup contender like Ottawa or Detroit for that.
As for my Stars, they look good this year. Of course, they look good every year until the playoffs. My home state Wings look pretty incredible. I'm downright convinced Zetterberg is the best player in the NHL, and best since Forsberg. Crosby, Oveckin, yeah yeah, I'd take Zetterberg.

Its been coming for a long time. I have no love for the leafs, but the way they've publically drawn out Ferguson's firing has been really shameful. I'd not be surprised if many quality candidates think twice about that job due to the cluster-fuck that is its front office and ownership situation.
Higher level executives on NHL teams are like referees, when they're doing a good job, you don't really notice them. Even the Canuck's former absentee owner from Seattle figured out after a couple of years that having a strong GM without higher level people screwing around with him is the way to go.
Regardless, the leafs really do need to do a complete re-build. They need to tear down, get some high draft picks (2008 is a good draft year. Getting as many picks as possible in this draft would be a good idea). Its painful to lose the heart of your team, but some times, it has to happen. The Canucks turned Trevor Linden into Tod Bertuzzi and Bryan McCabe, who in turn helped bring us the Sedin Twins (McCabe went for one of the picks used to draft the twins) and Luongo. Dumping salary, and amassing draft picks and good prospects is the way to go for them, but they'll need management that can evaluate talent, make good deals and deal with fan reaction to the team sucking for a few years. But this constant, barely making the playoffs/not quite making the play offs, not developing any future probably needs to stop.
Also, I think its fairly natural for Canadians to hope a Canadian team wins, since once hasn't done so since the Habs in 1993.
And, I wonder if Kris Beech just had the shortest career as a Canuck ever. Three games or so and he's waved again. Why they bothered to pick him up in the first place I don't know.

I'm all for the tradition of playing for 1 team that you bleed for and the importance of not trading away your captain, but the Maple Leafs really need some kind of help and I think they should trade Sundin. My logic:
a) The Leafs have little chance of making the playoffs this season (they are currently 14th seed out of 15). The Leafs haven't been serious contenders for the Cup for a while (heck, they missed the playoffs the last two years) and aren't going to get drastically better anytime soon unless they shell out big bucks for a marquee UFA.
b) Mats Sundin has expressed his willingness to resign with Toronto in the offseason. Why not pull the same thing St. Louis did with Tkachuk last year? Are you telling me St. Louis regrets renting out Tkachuk for a few weeks for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rd draft choice?
c) Toronto doesn't have too many high level prospects. Besides Tlusty and Pogge, the Leafs don't have any cheap, great young talent (note: I'm an outsider looking in, so I may have missed someone. don't kill me for it) that can lead the Leafs in the future. Also, cheap & talented players are crucial for any Cup contending team (like Zetterberg is making under $3M or point-producing guys still playing on rookie contracts like Stastny, Ovechkin, and Crosby) since you can go out and sign more/better UFA's.
d) Ferguson is finally gone. Toronto can trade away Sundin and at least expect to get something decent in return instead of getting burned in another trade made by a GM panicking for his job.
With all that said, GO WINGS! I'll be looking forward to Ken Holland making another solid deal at the deadline to shore up our defense and/or 2nd scoring line. I'm just sad that the Wings couldn't sport an entire starting lineup for the All-Star game.

Didn't we do that once? Or come damn close? Maybe I'm just remembering the Pistons when everyone but Tayshaun went.

I do believe it was the Pistons. I don't remember the Wings ever having 3 players in the starting lineup before, but then again I know that I can't remember a lot of the lineups from a few years back.
PS
I'm finally glad Osgood is getting some respect, again. I'm betting his recent signing could guarantee an Osgood/Howard tandem next year.

I went to Toronto last year and saw a Leafs game. It was glorious.
I live in Columbus, though I've never been to a Blue Jackets game.
I'm torn between which jersey to buy. Council me, oh P/A Hockey Thread!
I actually hate going to leafs games, (well actually I hate one aspect in particular, I love the hockey)...everybody in the lower bowl seems to be wearing a suit and tie, and nobody gets loud or cheers. It's more of a place of business, somewhere to bring a client. It kind of sucks the life out of the arena sometimes.

Its sort of the point, just like cheering for your home team.
I've somewhat adopted my roommates cheering structure:
HomeTeam / Fave Team > Canadian Teams > Original Six > Young Talented Teams > All Else
Unfortunately for me, I'm in Oil country and not a big Oilers / Flames fan. Originally from Winnipeg Jets town, so I'm waiting for Gretzky to make Phoenix Coyotes a contender so I can really start to root for them.

That wasn't my experience. We sat in the very top. Well, technically, we stood in the very top. The row behind all the seats where you're not allowed to drink (though we did anyway, gg flasks). The people in that region were quite rowdy.

Well, I watched what will probably the last Flames game I get to see during the regular season and Woo! They won! Decent game, too, although it was slow. Both teams played a very cautious game.
Still, Yelle's goal was beautiful, as was Conroy's. And the Minnesota goalie really made the play by getting the puck up ice for the lone Minnesota goal.

Ya, the upper bowl is where it's at. I meant it's kinda lame sitting down at ice level.

Toronto vs Washington tonight. At least during the first Toscala's the only thing keeping them alive. Washington is just hammering the team.
Edit: Okay, scratch that. By some amazing pass Toronto scored.

I really miss playing the Leafs like 20 times a year. Those were some great games, regardless of the caliber of each time.
As far as Mats Sundin goes, trade him to us Canucks. We need the offense, and if we get something going, we just might bring the Cup back to Canada.
Ya, now we (leafs) have to play teams like Ottawa, Boston, NYI like every week. Im getting tired of this kind of schedule.

I agree - the Leafs are in need of a complete overhaul. I don't think they've fully realized they're in the East yet.

Though seriously Columbus is still in the fight for 8th seed, only 1 point out. They could make it to the playoffs.
