I just bought a Macbook Pro. God I love this machine. But one little thing is bugging me, and I can't figure it out. I'm not all that savvy with OS X, but I think I've checked where I need to check for this problem...
The monitor dims after 5 minutes of no keyboard or mouse input. This makes it impossible to watch videos on the thing. I've gone into System Preferences and went to Display. There's nothing in there about dimming after time, but I disabled the ambient light detector. In Energy Saver, under both Battery and Power, I went to Options and unchecked the "Automatically reduce brightness before sleep" option. Still no joy.
When my copy of XP gets here from Newegg I'm going to Bootcamp this thing and see if it happens in Windows, but this seems more like a system setting that I'm just not seeing.
Under energy saver, set optimization to “Custom”, then click on “Options”, then uncheck “Automatically reduce the brightness…”
System preferences definitely has problems, but I guess this convoluted system is still better than putting it under screen saver settings that have to be accessed from the desktop.
Supabeast: I appreciate the reply, but as I said in my original post, I have done that and it has had no effect.
Lewisham: After some testing, it seems like it's limited to embedded flash video on websites. I installed VLC and downloaded a video file and my monitor doesn't shut off... But if I go to youtube or gametrailers and watch a video with either Firefox or Safari, my monitor will shut off in five minutes.
It was originally at its default (which was 20 mintues) and it turned off in five... I changed it to 30, and it still turned off in five. I completely disabled putting the monitor in sleep mode and that did the trick, but this seems to be a foolish compromise.
