Bad FPS Issue. Need Help

Hello all,

I'm experiencing an FPS problem.

What happens is I start playing a game, and my FPS drops to almost nothing once every 10 seconds.

I'll have smooth gameplay, then the FPS goes in the tank for a couple seconds. Then everything gets smooth again, and 10 seconds later it's back in the tank. Rinse and repeat.

I've tried all of the following -

- scanned for viruses
- scanned for spyware
- uninstalled / reinstalled ALL drivers
- checked for processes running in the background ( I don't see anything that's obviously causing the FPS drops).
- Checked my fans. Overheating doesn't seem to be the problem.

I'm out of ideas. Any ideas on how to fix this are welcome.

Is it in all games? Or one game?

It seems to be happening in every game (Gears of War, Counter Strike Source, Team Fortress 2) EXCEPT for Doom 3. For some reason Doom 3 is immune.

This is a long shot, but didn't doom 3 use some different type of graphics thing than those other games? Open GL or something?

    Sorry I can't help :(

Have you tried downloading the latest nvidia drivers?

You can get them from their website, www.nvidia.com.

How long have you had your computer, when did this start happening?

    Drivers are all updated.

It started happening a couple weeks ago.

The computer is less than a year old.

Have you updated DirectX lately? Or more importantly did you change anything before it started happening?

I'm taking a guess that you are having power supply issues. The wattage my be fluctuating under stress, causing the GPU to get less power, and thus bring down performance.

When was the last time you cleaned your computer (you know, dusted the insides n' shit)?

What is the brand of your power supply?

Also, what is the wattage? If it's a low-wattage PSU, that could be the problem. If it's a high-wattage model, but from a crappy manufacturer, that could also be the issue (budget PSUs tend to produce crappy power at high loads). And if it's both of those things, well yeah... power problem. The 8800GTS is an absolute power hog, I swear I see one of these "I have an 8800GT(S/X) but my framerate sux" threads at least once a week.
