So I just jumped in here to ask: I'm going to be buying a laptop within two weeks. I haven't really thought the decision through very much, and I thought i'd just get a macbook pro, the 1999 option, just because I can and I'd be using it with boot-camp. I know it doesn't seem like the right mindset to be investing so much money in, but I really only started thinking about it today. I'm experienced with Macs anyway, so the whole "Learning a new OS" thing doesn't really apply, but I was looking at Windows laptops and it's really practical to get a laptop that's almost have as much and still has the same specs, minus the apple gloss.
I'm a photographer so I was actually thinking about getting a laptop and a very, very large second hard drive, one that I could keep home, and use that for media/etc. Does anyone have any recommendations? Any good match-ups?
Just about any new PC Laptop you'd go with would come with Vista pre-loaded. Some folks seem to talk about Vista as if its the second coming of WinME, but I've not had any issues. And if you know how to use Win XP, Vista is pretty much entirely intuitive.
I really don't think it matters much what external hard drive you get, unless you want to use certain back up software. I suppose Mac compatibility may be an issue with some software that would be bundled with external drives, but you don't really need to use that stuff. You can get a 1 terabyte external drive for around $250, which should meet most people's needs for a "very large" external drive.
