Medieval 2 Total War crashing - unspecified error

I'm not sure where this post should go, here or G&T, but I'll post here anyway.
I recently went back to Medieval 2 - Total War to play a nice, long campaign. I'd had it installed since last July, and along with the Kingdoms expansion, it had been giving no problems at version 1.3. However, this time it kept crashing to the desktop with only "Medieval 2 has encountered an unspecified error" as an error message.
I uninstalled the game, deleted everything except the save games folder, and re-installed. With the vanilla 1.0 version, it gave me some error about the graphics being turned up too high. So, I turned them down, and I got the unspecified error again. I installed the 1.2 patch, and the same thing happened. I installed the 1.3 patch that came with the Kingdoms discs, and while it was playable for a while, it now crashes all the time at the same battle, towards the end. I don't want to just skip this battle because it just goes to show that it'll happen again, and I want to fix whatever is causing this right now. Just last night I updated to the latest nVidia drivers but the error remains.
I took the advice on the TWCenter forums to post the log following the crash, which is here -
