Hrmmm... tried to search for MoO threads, but for some reason the Search function doesn't seem to be functioning for me. Apologies if I'm covering old ground.
Anyways... I have just introduced a buddy to MoOII, and we'd like to work some play by email option, if it's possible. Anyone know any way to set such a thing up? Or, are we stuck with sharing an empire (which is far less fun than crushing his empire)?
I don't think Moo2 had a PBEM option. The only multiplayer was TEN or something, maybe local network. Look around in the multiplayer options, I never played anything but single player.

Oh, I know there's nothing in the menu re: PbEM... I was hoping that someone had discovered a workaround to make such a thing possible.
As I recall, MoO2 allowed you to play with multiple players on one computer, so couldn't you just e-mail the save game back and forth? Though you would still have to make arrangements for when any battles broke out between the two of you.

That's what I initially thought (It's the "Hotseat Play" option). The problem:
When Player 1 hits "turn," it throws you to a "select player" screen. From there, there is no save/load option. So, the problem is simply that a saved game would have to be sent either:
1. At the end of Player 1's turn (prior to hitting the "turn" button), disclosing locations of worlds, fleets, etc., as well as providing the opportunity to review (and even change) Player 1's setup; or
2. After Player 1 hits "turn" and selects Player 2, disclosing locations of worlds, fleets, etc., as well as providing the opportunity to review (and even change) Player 2's setup prior to them playing their turn.
So... problematic either way... unless someone out there has an ingenious solution.
I could have sworn MoO2 had some sort of direct connect capability. I don't have it installed atm so I can't check
It has a network option, a modem option, as well as a "null modem" option. As far as I know, all those options work fine (I am assuming that the null modem option is a crossover cable?), but I am looking for that PbEM pace, as my friend and I both work a lot of hours, and finding an unbroken streak is problematic... plus, we really want to have an epic long battle for domination that might not be possible in a single playing.

Thoughts?
Hmmm, I've never played MOO multiplayer but could you just leave the game running and each make your move whenever you can?

I guess I should have clarified that we don't live in the same household... so it's not an option, I'm afraid. I would highly recommend the multiplayer. I used to do hotseat with a couple of friends in university, and with my brother when I lived at home. It is a hell of a lot of fun. We always played "race to kill off the AI, then immediately attack each other when the last AI world falls."
Maybe you could get a neutral 3rd party to click through the transition part? Though you'd still once again have a problem during battles. I don't think this way is possible if you guys can't trust each other not to cheat.
Maybe you could do the network play, but just leave it running as often as possible? It's an older game, it probably wouldn't take up too many resources.

Actually this last bit is what I meant.

What I would suggest too. Back in those days I don't think emailing game files was very feasible. If you want to play a turn-based RTS with email capability, play Civ4. Or maybe even one of the Warlords titles.

Easy solution: Turn on Strategic Combat.
but that would only fix one problem.
