Console Breaking Point

Mmmm... Cocks...Mmmm... Cocks... Registered User regular
edited January 2008 in Games and Technology
Or any technology really I guess.

What I mean is, at what point did you see a new console as "worth it" what game or what feature made you go ".. holy shit" and then you went and changed your pants.

I couldn't really decide between the 360 or the PS3 and as for the time being I don't have the money or the line up of games I need at this point. One of my roommates recently got this godly peice of equiptment(for those of you that can't see it, it's logitechs new racing wheel. But it's not just any wheel, it's 900 degrees with a very impressive force feedback and beautiful metal analog pedals. Now this is all fine and dandy but it also has a full working six speed clutch with the whole H gate and everything) and watching him play with it... I knew at one point I was going to need a PS3 and Gran Turismo. It wasn't something that "oh wow gonna have to look into that when it comes out" it just touched that little part of my nerddom.

Any moments for you guys?

Mmmm... Cocks... on

Mass Effect, but i am a bioware junkie. I think I regret my decision, overall. I would wait another year or so to snag a next gen console.

For the Xbox 360, there wasn't really anything specific. I knew I was getting one for Halo 3, period, but I ended up buying it ridiculously early just to have a next-gen console. I only bought Kameo and Oblivion at the time. Kind of a dumb reason to buy a $500 console, but I have no regrets there (thousands of hours have been thoroughly wasted!).

For the PS3, I have a specific moment... Seeing Uncharted in a Sony Store on a 50" TV. Jesus fucking Christ. It was probably the best looking game I've ever seen in motion. It took all my willpower not to break down and buy the console on the spot. I've since ordered one with Airmiles points... unfortunately, I have to wait 3-4 weeks for my PS3 to arrive :(

this generation it's most assuredly littlebigplanet. i went from being completely ambivalent about games in general and pretty much skipping the last half of the ps2/xbox gen entirely, to me hoarding my pennies and begging the missus for a ps3 and a decent telly to play it on - after just a single video with some doofus sackboys riding a skateboard.

it's still not here but i'm still as excited as ever. it's just the game i've always wanted, with both a design ethic that i adore and a wide open canvas to bring your own creativity to the table

Playstation - I had always heard how great Metal Gear was, but hadn't even really seen it played in action. Finally bought one and my friend immediately let me borrow MGS.

Playstation 2 - I waited until Metal Gear Solid 2 came out to get the system.

PSP - I didn't get one until MGS: Portable Ops came out.

PS3 - I'm getting one very soon because MGS4 is coming out soon.

When it makes sense as a consumer.

360 breaking point will be when Jasper board is released.

PS3 not until at least next holiday season, same for Wii. Depends on rumors of upgraded consoles and stuff too.

360 looked like a trash compacted box of broken engineering. It seemed like the slightest touch would send it off to Mount Doom to go all red ring on me. Then I saw Mass Effect, pre-ordered a copy and awaited the Flacon Core setup.

    I picked up the console.
    I picked up Mass Effect.
I played and beat Mass Effect, laughed/cried/screamed.
I sold Mass Effect and 360 for a modest amount and never looked back.

    Game and Price for me.

I look at a system, and start picking out the games I'd want for it. If there's enough to justify it in my mind, then I just wait for the price to drop to an acceptable level to me.

I'm waiting on the next 360 price drop, and then I'll probably pick one up.

whenever a system is cheap(er) and there are a crapload of games i want to play for it and i happen to have some money kicking around, that is the breaking point for me

i bought a ps2 once it hit $199 (2002ish?), and a Gamecube once it hit $99. before that i got a cheap Dreamcast but i forget exactly how much it was.

i'll probably get a ps3 or a 360 in a year or two. i might grab a wii just for the heck of it before then, assuming they ever actually get in stores enough to be an impulse buy possibility. and i got a hell of cheap DS from someone i know.

ive never been an early adopter i guess. and i have a broad definition of early.

Dead Rising being released (I'm a huge horror game fan) + a strong upcoming game list + the $600 PS3 announcement + being single (at the time) w/a good amount of disposable income was what resulted in me purchasing my 360.

On a somewhat related note, my 360 just recently hit the breaking point from fun secondary console to my primary console. It was a combination of getting a new high quality monitor to replace the SDTV I had it hooked up to, several months of strong XBLA releases, a fantastic week where I rented and beat Bioshock (on Hard mode w/no respawning) and the imminent release of two games I am way psyched for: Lost Odyssey & Devil May Cry 4.

I actually was sold on the Wii based on a combination of Wii Play and a newfound trust in Nintendo from owning a DS and playing it more than I had played a console in years.

the breaking point for both the 360 and the wii for me, was having a deadbeat older brother who buys video games instead of moving out. I can't complain though, I have a 360 and a Wii and I didn't even have to pay for them.

I buy video game stuff like i do anything else.

    On impulse when im bored.

I woke up one morning and didnt have shit planned, so i dragged my roommate around town looking for somewhere that had the best bundle deal on a PS3. Found instead one that was open boxed at Best Buy for 450 bucks (This was when the 60gigs were selling for 550 CDN) so i picked it up.

My 360, got jealous after seeing my dad get one at christmas, so i went out and bought one on the 27th instead. Plus i had the week off from work, but none of my friends did, so i was bored as shit.

The PS2, which was the only console i had any interest in at all last generation, i saved up for over a year before it launched and bought one shortly after (Once you could find it in stores, so maybe 3 months). That one was a no brainer for me since i got screwed by buying an N64 the previous generation (my favorite games at that point were RPGs, i waited for fucking ever for ogre tactics to come out, and then it turned out to be an SRPG instead, i was pretty disappointed even though it was a fucking awesome game). Since the PS2 played PS1 games as well, i bought a lot more of those at first, not to mention the PS2 launch was kind of shit... I think im the only person in the world who owns a copy of Tsugunai though.

Before that, my dad just used to buy himself consoles, so i didnt really have to worry. Plus i was a kid so i didnt really have the money to buy an NES or a SNES myself.

    Console = Buy IF Price < $300 AND Games (#*$) > Price AND Price+Game < Wallet AND/OR Brand=Nintendo

The problem being that once I buy 1 console, purchasing games for said console usually results in Wallet never being greater than Price+Game ever again. That, and I have a really soft spot for Nintendo. I think the only non-Nintendo console I have ever had since the NES (Atari and Intellivision before) was a GameGear. and the only consoles I've missed were a SNES (Big PC gamer at the time) and now a DS ($ + never have time for a portable).

Holy crap, this is exactly the same formula I mentally use. :D Though perhaps not as fully contingent on what I have in my wallet; once I've decided I'm going to buy a system, I spend a good month hunting around looking for deals or lurking eBay auctions. I scored both my DS and PSP a good while after their launches through eBay auctions at pretty good discounts, and got my 360 in a combo of Sears clearance and eBay so that buying a Core + 20GB HD was about $260.

I guess I use the more rudimentary "Buy IF (total price of games desired) > (price I can obtain system for)." This saves you from the heartache of buying a system for one game and having that game be shitty/not worth the cost. The Wii was the first system I got for full retail price at launch since the SNES (and even then, my Wii was a Christmas gift from my wife), but the combination of games I was interested in and games I knew were coming already surpassed $250. I was moderately interested in a 360 until the Rock Band announcement, and at that point the (total price of games desired) jumped up a cool $170. :P

To be sure, I normally pick up at least one game that I really love with a console, so they've all seemed "worth it" from the get go. However, the below are what I consider to be THE milestone games which left the biggest impression on me for the system.

Genesis: The moment I opened it and saw that blue hedgehog staring back at me
Game Gear: The master gear converter
Sega CD: The ending to sonic CD.
    32X: Virtua Fighter, no contest
Saturn: It wasn't until I got Fighters Megamix that I really fell in love with it. Yes, this was after NiGHTS
    NES: Mario 3
    SNES: Starfox
Gameboy: Around the time I finished Donkey Kong Land, I stepped back and realized that I had more fun than I had with DKC.
Virtual Boy: The second I popped in Wario Land
    N64: Starfox 64
    GCN: Resident Evil 4
    GBA: Metroid Zero Mission
    Nintendo DS: Sonic Rush
Wii: I'm still waiting for March 9th
PSX: Metal Gear Solid, very very easily
    PS2: MGS3, very very easily
PSP: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
    PS3: I'm betting it'll be MGS4
    Xbox: Panzer Dragoon Orta
Xbox 360: Mass Effect has defined the 360 in my eyes
Neo Geo Pocket Color: Sonic Pocket Adventure
Neo Geo AES: King of Fighters 98
    Jaguar: Tempest 2000
    Jaguar CD: Myst
    3DO: Gex
    GP32: TOMAK! Save us Again

and finally, just has he had done 8 years prior, the moment I saw Sonic Adventure, I was sold on the dreamcast. I can still remember every single detail about the moment i first booted up my dreamcast and popped in Sonic Adventure. I played for an entire day straight, beating it as all the characters without a VMU. Sonic Adventure will always hold a spot in my heart as one of my favorite sonic games of all time. Easily the best 3D sonic game, and a damn fine game to boot.

EDIT: When I think of Sonic Adventure, I think of Sonic running through Speed Highway Zone Act 1, near the begining, right before the first loop, at breakneck speed.

For the 360 it was a mixture of Dead Rising, Ace Combat 6, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, and Bioshock. I didn't buy one till all of those were out.

For the Playstation 3, it was the recent fact that Blu Ray got Warner Bros.

This is me as well (for a lot of it). As soon as I saw the Dead Rising case at Best Buy, I told one of my coworkers to go grab one for me... Originally (after beating DR I was disappointed) but now that I have Gamefly and am able to catch up on games... It's coming (slowly) closer to being a wiser investment.

The PS3 will as well... In a year or two. (I was going to buy one with my Rebate Check, but I just got some emergency dental work... And my insurance didn't cover it... So I owe my dentist $450.)

You can substitute "wallet" for "bank" basically. If I don't have the money to get it, then I won't get it.

I find it funny that you also got the Wii at launch as a gift from your wife and the first time you bought a console at full price because it's practically the same exact thing here! :D Did your wife also go with you to stand in line on launch day and let you play it a full month and a half before Christmas because it would be cruel to keep it from you until Christmas too? 'Cause that would be creepy if we were that alike.. :)

Basically, I just need one game I'm really going to want. PS3 was Ninja Gaiden Sigma (yes, I bought a $500 console for a game I'd bought twice before, and beaten more times than I could count), and the 360 was...I don't even remember, actually.

Genesis: Sonic 1. Wanted a TG16 until I saw Sonic running on a demo kiosk, holy shit.
SNES: Super Mario World. I wasn't a huge mario fan, especially being a Genesis kid but shit. Blew me away at a friend's house. Dunno what else I might have seen... F-Zero? LTTP?
PSOne: When the PSOne model hit $100. Or was it a little less? I dunno. FF9 had come out not long before, didn't look like the blocky turd I remember 7 looking like in magazines, so I picked it up with the PSOne. The SNES had turned me into a Square junkie but the big move to 3D pissed me off. I ended up kind of hating FF9 but immediately started buying every square product I could still find... and didn't really like 90% of it. I guess Tactics and Xenogears were the only ones that stuck.
GC: Doesn't count, surprise gift from Sister, hadn't really been wanting it or anything. Came w/ that Zelda comp. WW and MK:DD had just come out and sealed it though. Grew to love it I guess.
PS2: Xenosaga & mostly had been waiting for a lower price. Xenosaga: not so hot. Silent Hill 2&3 saved it for me though.
Wii: VC. Also potential, pricepoint, Nintendo franchises. Hardware lust.
GBA: Uhh... GC connectivity. For real. WW & AC. Found a cheap used SP.
DS: The DS Lite. Secondarily Mario Kart & Castlevania.

No 360 or PS3 yet or maybe ever, I dunno. Very, very few of the games existing or coming really jump out at me, minus some Live / PSN stuff. Might have done a 360 if they hadn't been dropping like flies. I'll see what happens once the new Silent Hill and RE come out... also stuff like SMT & some of the other oddball franchises I keep my eye on. PSP has a few cool things but still isn't very interesting to me.

DS: I saw the potential of it. Upgraded to a DSLite on the Lite launch day
360: Combination of a bunch of things. the 360 is only a month old for me, but quickly becoming my media hub. I <3 it. Streaming Video, XBLA, Halo 3, Mass Effect, more games I still have to pick up. It's made of win and awesome. I got it on sale on Boxing day.

NES - Mario Bros, Duckhunt, Field & Track cartridge. I loved the Zapper and the Power Pad (I wonder if anyone else had this) that I got with the system and games.
Super Nintendo - I bought it to play FF III and Chrono Trigger, probably my favorite games of all time.
Genesis - Sonic the Hedgehog, the reason why most people got this system.
PS2 - I think I got it because everyone and their mother had one.
DS - I heard good things about it and it was on sale.
Wii - Impulse buy. I didn't know much about it but I knew it was high in demand. Once I saw it in-stock on Amazon and I just purchased it without thinking about it.

I'm still waiting on which system to buy. Can't really decide between a 360 or a PS3. Just got a new computer, so hopefully that'll hold me over til the next-gen comes out.

I can't really decide between 360 and PS3, but I figure I'll want one of them before the year's done (especially with the rebates).

I bought one of those eee laptops because it sounded practical and neat and like I could learn a lot about linux from it, but instead it just sits on my desk unused. I would hate to do the same for a console.

I really want Mass Effect, and the Xbox Live arcade and movie service just blow my mind (I know PSN has some high-quality original games, and support for full PS3 games, but I just love the little old-school timewasters on XBLA). However, I'm weary about playing Mass Effect on anything other than a PC. So I'm not entirely sold. Also, I can play games like Gears of War on the PC I built last October.

The PS3 has some cool new IPs hitting for it, but I'm not too interested in them, and I don't have an HD TV and won't for a long time, so I don't care at all about blu-ray. MGS and FFXIII kindof interest me, but I still have unopened copies of FFX and FFXII to get to someday first.

I was psyched for the Wii back when we all thought Red Steel would actually be a good game, and when I saw Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Excite Truck, Monkey Ball, and some of the other games getting hyped at launch. It's alright, but I'm still really waiting for something polished and original for it (no more heroes is cool, but something bigger and better needs to hit).

My selling points on a few of the systems are a bit odd actually:

Atari 7800 - saw versions of Joust, DKJr and Robotron that were basically arcade perfect
NES - Super Mario Bros - like just about everyone I suppose :)
Genesis - ESwat and Might and Magic. I loved the arcade ESwat and a friend had M&M on the Apple IIe that we played the heck out of. Admittedly, when the system was opened on Xmas morning, Sonic 1 still got the most play.
PSOne - I rented the Saturn, PS1, and N64 and out of everything, Tekken and Destruction Derby were what really sold me on the system. They were the first two games I bought too.
PS2 - Strangely enough it was playing Tony Hawk 4 on the PS2 that really sold me on the console. I waited quite awhile before upgrading to it though.
Wii - already said in previous post - of course my wife wanting one really helped me become a fairly early Wii owner!

    For handhelds:
    Gameboy - Tetris, obviously.
Gamegear - I really don't know what I was thinking except "Oh look - a Gamegear for sale cheap"
Gameboy SP - nothing in particular just bought it to have something to do in the hospital when my wife was pregnant.
DS - we loved the SP and decided to buy and 2nd handheld and the DS was out so it just made sense.

Genesis: Sonic, gotten fairly close to launch.
Sega CD : months of never owning the system, just playing on it through the occasional rental. Finally got it, Night Trap, and the first Lunar game.
Saturn: Got it during the 'three free games' promotion with the NiGHTS bundle, along with Shining Wisdom, Dragon Force, and Bug Too!.
PS1: Final Fantasy VII and later Tactics, pretty much.
Dreamcast: Shenmue, Resident Evil Code Veronica, and Jet Grind Radio, mostly in that order.
    PS2: Xenosaga and Frequency.
GBA: The release of the Demi-Kids games.
Xbox: The Doom 3 CE, since I didn't have a good enough PC for the game, and that it included the classic games sealed the deal. Then I finally got JSRF, KOTOR, and Panzer Dragoon Orta.
Gamecube: Tales of Symphonia, and the Metroid Prime bundle.
    DS: Trauma Center.
    PSP: FFT.

I basically get a system when a game comes out that I know makes the purchase worth it. I haven't seen that yet for the 360 or PS3 in my opinion. The Wii and Fire Emblem/No More Heroes is making me seriously consider it, but I don't think I'm ready to commit to next-gen yet.
