So about a month or so ago I found out that I was unable to get into cpanel with my current web hosting provider. I called in support and discovered that they migrated their servers and changed around everything about the hosting packages to use something called websiteOS. They forgot to tell me. Additionally, how they handle sub-domains was changed so they use something called sitepreviewer or something... and it seems that databases are now stored with some third party because I had to remove "localhost" from my db login phps, and I can't even create usernames for my databases. so yea... the last straw was when they emailed me to say I had an outstanding balance on my bill when I had an automated subscription via paypal to pay for it... which they don't do anymore... and also did not inform me about when I called.
I've been with them for 3-4 years now, my sites are small, but at this point it's not working. I asked my friends and somebody suggested dreamhost to me. The way their packages work though doesn't appealing though. Canaca.ca was suggested as well, and I like their offering / price. BUT! It helps to look around, or ask, and so I was wondering if anybody had any hosting solutions that they use and like with cpanel, mysql4+, php, and php myAdmin for a reasonable price? Thanks :>

I used http://www.1and1.com for 3 years, just as storage though, I never registered an actual domain besides the random character string they gave me. But they were good, and at the time it was 3 years free. I think plans start at $2 a month now? And domains are $5-6.
If 99.999% uptime isn't something you need, i'd suggest dreamhost. you won't find anywhere else that gives you as much as they do for the price, and they have a pretty good control panel. The downside is they tend to have a bit more downtime than other hosts.. They aren't absolutely horrible by any means but i'd say I probably get 2 hours or so of downtime a month. Fine for pretty much anything except running a business.
I don't see how their packages aren't appealing since they pretty much only have one now, and it has everything, for cheap
Is Godaddy's hosting management system as hideous and ad-laden as their domain management page?
It's not very user friendly, if that's what your asking...but if I learned on it, I figure anyone could since I'm pretty retarded when it comes to web design.

I use 1&1 myself, no problems at all. And they have starter deals, like pay for 3 months, get an extra 3 months free and such.
I've been using site5.com, pretty happy with them. The few times I've used their support, they're quick and helpful. Plus their user forums are huge and very useful. They're a bit slow on the upload sometimes, but they have pretty much every feature you could ever hope for (including Ruby on Rails, which I keep meaning to make use of)

I've had a few sites hosted with www.asmallorange.com for a couple years now, and aside from a hardware crash a year or so back, I've had nothing but good experiences with them.
Dreamhost recently fucked over a crap load of their user base by charging insane amounts of money accidentally, so people are currently migrating away from them.
I use http://www.holeinthewallhosting.com - Whilst at first 400mb storage/20gb transfer doesn't seem like much, unless you KNOW you'll be using more it'll probably be enough. It is for me and I run two website off of it. It also costs $10 a YEAR, not a month. You can pay $10 more a year and upgrade the storage or bandwidth.
Also, if you happen to have an account at Something Awful, you can get a better deal on it.
If it doesn't require any mySQL or anything (you said they were small), Blogger has been perfect for me. Fast loading, very custimizable, lots of space (like a GB or somethign from your Gmail account I think) and quick easy publishing with lots of options. It's not for everyone and I don't really know what you need, but this has been perfect for my needs.

Wordpress.com recently bumped their free storage space to 3gb, so both of you might want to look in to it. :P
Well one of the subs is a php/mysql driven page for a game, so I don't think Blogger would work.
That holeinthewallhosting looks like a pretty sweet deal. I don't have an SA account or anything but 10 bucks a year is pretty trivial. How long would it take to set up an account with them (holeinthewall)?

Haha! Which one of you signed up to Hole In The Wall and told them that I had recommended you? I just got an email from HitW saying that I had referred someone and 2 credits had been added to my account.
I signed up for it but I didn't have the tab for this visible, so I just put "penny arcade" btu they haven't contacted me or anything yet. I dunno if I did it right or wrong. The subscription was setup, but yea. I think I goofed up. Maybe I should contact them or something. I dunno.
If I get a chance to do it though I will note that you did refer me to it. :P

Well, I got the referral credits anyway, so unless someone else on here signed up, it was you.
If you DO have any questions for them, though, their support staff are ridiculously nice. Hit them up with whatever questions you want and they'll definitely be happy to help you however they can.
Yea, that makes sense. I'm going to wait before I send out any emails to ask about it though. If all works out, you managed to solve my problem with the cheapest, most robust solution! :P

Just bumping this thread to ask about these guys. What do they do if you exceed your bandwidth limit? I'm thinking of signing up to them to host the site I'll be making for a band (just small to begin with, but we'll probably move up to having music on there too), and wonder how that'd work out.
I like dream host, I have about 30 domains with them and about 4 active sites. The shared hosting is cheap and fairly stable (been stumbled, dugg, reddit and the site still worked).
I had bad problems with godaddy. Also look on the internets, lots of people don't like them.
I would say try dreamhost, it's like $10 a month or such.

Most of the people that frequent their forums (employees included) would fit right in here at PA.
Lots of people hate them.
I haven't had a problem really, but then again I do not do complicated stuff.
I've heard gator is cheap and really reliable.

I'm reading around for information on Hasweb and 1&1 too. Thanks!

bob, how is the SiteAdmin control panel, and how many sub-domains do they allow? I used sub-domains a lot with my junk... (GameX., Photos., etc)
Looks like asmallorange.com uses cpanel from browsing their forums, but how many subdomains do they allow? :U
Thanks for the suggestions!

I think I'm a little late to the party, but as many as you want. Same with addon domains.

Well, yes, and sadly they just redesigned it not two weeks ago and it's just as bad if not worse.
