Whenever I play an RPG or any story-heavy game, I can't help but get sucked into the history of the world I'm trying to save at the moment. That's why every time I come across a timeline of a video game universe, it comes as a real treat to me. Sometimes, though, these can be very difficult to find, if they even exist at all. What do you all do when you need a detailed chronology of a video game series?
seriously im worried. these are truly the end of days. duke nukem forever is coming out, and the best nintendo ds game on the horizon is a sonic the hedgehog rpg by bioware.
lets just say that anyone that told you zelda had no canon or timeline is an idiot.
Zelda had no canon or timeline prior to OoT, and even now only has one in the very loosest sense. I didn't dig around that site at all, but I'm willing to bet it's constructed some sort of madman's timeline out of obscure developer quotes and migraine-inducing leaps of logic that aren't ever confirmed one way or the other by the games themselves.
Anyway, I spent quite a long time flipping through the codex in Mass Effect, and I got pretty emotionally invested into Rapture. Mario Galaxy had a really cool world as well.
If you'd like, I could detail the sonic the hedgehog timeline... but it's not very interesting.
TSR, everything you say is interesting.
well, I mean, even I find it uninteresting. I generally dislike sonic story lines, be they official or otherwise. Depending on where you are, the chronology for sonic will be different, as he has different timelines in the US, UK, and Japan.

Largely the migraine logic. I hung out on the SNES boards at GameFAQs back in the days that the Zelda timeline was taking form (the consensus then was a bit different than what is in steve's link). Imagine all the Final Fantasy fanboys in the world trying to make a massive quilt out of aspects of every game bearing the Final Fantasy name to generate a semi-coherent continuity among the games.
Granted Zelda games are a bit more consistent in many ways than Final Fantasy, but the concept was similar. The timeline was pieced together out of game storylines based on certain assumptions of how the Link/Zelda/Ganon dynamic works.

Can you explain the timeline descrepancies, then?
It stems from Sonic's origins. Depending on where you live, he has different origins. In the UK, he was created by Dr. Kintobor in a failed lab experiment. In the US, he's the nephew of uncle chuck who created his sneakers. I'll go into more detail later and try to type out a typical sonic post about the timeline of sonic. Most of the odd stuff in the timeline comes from later games anyways, like the extermination of the Echidna race, the ultimate weapon experiments with Gerald Robotnik, and of course the future with Blaze and Silver the Hedgehog.
EDIT: Also confusing is that at the very minumum, the US timeline is considered canon by sonic team, but it's contradicted in Sonic Adventure 2 several times.

Seriously, you could talk about Sonic's bowel movements and it'd be interesting.
Electronic composer for hire.

That would be the destruction of the Echidna race by Chaos.
