Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like we're fairly lack on these this generation. Recently, we've had Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Untold Legends, uh, - I can't even think of any more that have come out on the consoles.
They had a ton of these games out on the last generation systems. On the Xbox, I owned the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games, and Fallout: Brotherhood of the Steel, Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes, and then X-Men: Legends. On my PS2, I had the Champions of Norrath games. Most of them were pretty good, and it seemed like a pretty popular genre.
Are new gaming themes and innovations killing off the simple gameplay of the action RPG?
Or am I just missing something, and not seeing anything coming out with any promise in the near future?
I'm glad to hear that's not what you call action RPGs. We should discuss the finer points of personal opinions.
Way to shit up a thread, asshole.
Oh come on, you can't take a little joke? I just found it funny that you came here to tell him what you consider an action RPG. Because I'm pretty sure that's not what he asked you to do.
not to get into a genre war, but I wouldn't call those action-rpgs. action rpgs are more like Zelda, or Wonderboy, or Super Paper Mario.
I don't really know what to call what you've described.
I've always heard the games in the first post mentioned as action RPGs, and that's the standard nomenclature so far as I know.
In any case, they are noticeably absent. Crackdown almost barely sorta qualifies. You do improve 4-5 skills by using them. It doesn't have same-system co-op, which is a major fun factor in action RPGs.
Was Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows a 360 game? I heard it sucked awfully though.

All those D&D games, and Fallout: BoS, sucked balls.
In any event, there's an action RPG on the 360, Mass Effect, you may have heard of it.

What's that... Monster Madness Battle for Suburbia or something like that? Does that qualify? I think most things are going to be from XBLA and PSN though and not have a disc release.
Anytime I get to pick disciplines or areas to level up I consider it RPGish. (Which, I guess, puts NOLF2 as fps-rpg) so that would add KOTOR to the mix on last-gen. But it is still pretty early on for this generation, no? I mean not so much the 360 but the other two are newer. Is there nothing on the horizon in this aspect? It's been said but Mass Effect is the big one right now.
edit: and I don't think new gaming innovations are killing the genre. I actually think the genre is sort of young. There are still RPGs and Dungeon Crawlers and even Adventure Games ...so I can't imagine that a genre like Action RPG would be on it's way out.

And if you use skills as a means of determining if something is an RPG, that reminds me of how awesome Dark Messiah of Might and magic is
The PSP has a few,it seems like the portables are the way they are going for a bit.

From the Abyss (Japan-only as it stands right now but DS is region-free) takes the idea behind Secret of Mana's combat/exploration engine and has developed it into a smooth, spazzless, less glitchy form which is probably a lot closer to what the original SoM team probably had in mind.
It also steals most of the SoM look, but the game's unfortunately a dungeon Crawler; story is sparse and character interaction isn't handled on the "field", but on its own screens.

The most actiony rpg I've seen would probably be Kingdom Hearts, but again, that's last generation.

Beat 'em ups refers to games like double dragon or streets of rage. The term I've heard the most is Hack 'n Slash.
Way to shit up a thread, asshole.

Again no co-op, but it's otherwise outstanding.
God of War is almost an action RPG. Too Human looks like the first real action RPG for the 360.
Arkadian Warriors on XBLA is an Action RPG.
There are whole bunch out for PC, though.
They're generally called hack & slash RPGs or Diablo clones.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
This guy has the right idea. Goddamn that game is fun.
SteamID: Baroque And Roll
Currently waiting on Too Human which is looking to shape up nicely, other than it I can't think of a single future title.
At least by the definitions in the OP, it's definately more hack&slash than story based
