Hey! I just bought an 8 gig iPod touch, typing on it now!, and was wondering about all the cool things it can do. Are there any touch related links that you swear by? Any things that it can do that I might not know about? I have used meebo for MSN which is pretty good. I haven't got the jan update, is it worth the 25 bucks? Thanks :)

if you're not too scared, getting it to a "hacked" state has been the best thing i've ever done. ever.

the third party apps make this the most amazing PDA i've ever owned, hands down. for serious.

ah yes I heard about "jail breaking" it. Not sure of the legality of that though?

2,000 people per year get convicted for jail breaking their ipod touch. Fact. Dont let it be you.

why are you worried about legality? Its your hardware, so do with it what you want. Hehe.

K but anyway, I use firefly media server to stream from my iPod to my desktop, fivedice as the most amazing time waster ever, calendar fix to allow me to add events from the iPod, and summerboard to customize the spring board etc.

By the way I'm typing from mine too.

I couldn't imagine using an iphone/touch without jailbreaking it. It's like driving a car without windows.

My feelings on it are that Apple has effectively made a hand held computer. Like some shit right out of Star Trek.

Sadly, they are marketing it as an mp3 player that happens to browse the web rather than a computer that can also play mp3s.

Wait, there's a GPS thing for the iPod touch?

    Really? How does it work?

Edumacate me! I've wanted a GPS for a long time, and the new iPod touch's seem to bring together all the fun PDA things I want to desperately.

There is no GPS for iphone or touch. The google maps application can estimate your location based off of the known locations of cell towers (lots and lots) and certain wifi hotspots (unimaginably few). Since the touch has no cell baseband radio, wifi locations are going to be the only thing it can do, which will be terribly inaccurate.

Jailbreaking is an activity that I also hold an average to above average interest in performing, and I would enjoy reading about the pros, cons and step-by-step DIY HOW-TO instructions.
