so are iphones not for people that travel internationally?
My Nokia has been telling me to go fuck myself in terms of reception, plus the thing can't hold a charger- it requires sensual placement of the damn charger cord (which falls out pretty easily) to even get it to charge.
I've been wanting to get an iPhone but I travel between the US and Asia during breaks in summer and winter. Would I be forced to use a different phone at those times, or do the carriers have some kind of global synergy bullshit going on (i.e the option to get a local number, using orange if you're in France, Frenchies getting to use AT&T in the states) It's crucial that you be able to use local numbers obviously- if not you could buy 3 more iphones with what you'd pau in roaming charges.
Did Apple even take into account international travellers when they agreed to that idiotic locking system?
You need to have the international data plan, otherwise you're gonna be hurtin like a mofo. (Google on iPhone International for more info.) It's set up with GSM, so most Asian countries should be ok.
You have two options: use AT&T's international plan, like GungHo said, or buy an unlocked iPhone, never update its firmware and just buy SIM cards (planned or prepaid) in every country you frequent.
The iPhone is a quad-band GSM phone, so you'll have coverage everywhere in the world that uses GSM, which is, well, just about everywhere. Just be prepared to pay out the ass if you go the AT&T route.
