Really strange power problems. Do I have Power Gremlins?

This is the strangest PC problem I've ever had. I don't even know how to start figuring out what is going on! So, I turn to you, the collective geek-wisdom of Penny Arcade for answers.

I have a fairly new, fairly high-powered rig. (9 months old, Core 2 Duo E6700, at 2.66 ghz, 8800GTX, 2 gigs ram). It has plenty of power to run the hardware, and until about two weeks ago never had any problems. Then, weirdness.

One day, it would not turn on. I started to panic - my dream machine was teh brokzorz! However, we had just had a pretty bad storm, complete with power transformers going kaboom, so I though that maybe, just maybe, the surge protector had taken one and sacrificed itself to protect my rig, even though everything else plugged into it (modem, monitor, printer, etc...) was still running fine, so I tried a different socket on the strip. Ta da! It worked!

For a few days. Then nothing again. I used a crappy old strip for a few days with no problems, and I went and bought a new strip (this time with battery backup in case of another outage - shitty weather lately). Then today, it happens again on the new strip. Curious, I didn't just try a new plug, I plugged my monitor into the one the case had been using before refusing to turn on. Both plugs work.

WTF?

It has not, by the way, shut down while I was using it.

Is this a PC problem? Wiring? Shitty luck with power strips? The case's power supply? I have a couple of months of warranty left, but don't want to send away my machine for the intemrinably long evaluation/ repair process, especially since the problem can take a week or so to develop - or not show up again at all. Please good readers, I need your help/ advice!
