I've got a Remington Model 700 in a nice, padded Pelican case. I spent 45 minutes last night cleaning the gun up after 4 months of storage since I last used it, and I realized something:
I have everything I need to clean and maintain the barrel properly, but I don't have anything to coat the exterior with to keep it clean/shiny/glamorous looking.
The gun has a synthetic stock and body, and a metal barrel assembly, scope, and bipod. Any recommendations on 'the bomb' cleaning/coating oil?
I just use Hoppe's 9 Lubricating Oil, seems to work quite well, and should be readily available at stores that sell all your other maintenance supplies.
A lot of oils will work for this, some better than others.
Just about anything you can pick up with your other supplies will work for this. I tend to use Breakfree CLP myself since I've used it to actually remove rust from the outside of a barrel before and it's easy to just cover the outside with the same oil I'm using on the inside.
Now, if you're less lazy, then mineral oil or mineral spirits can work better to protect against rust. I use Sentry Solutions' tuf-cloth on my knives and occasionally the firearms as well. People who live in much more humid areas like Hawaii have had great results with the stuff protecting against rust.
Finally, there's Flitz metal polish, which is good for literally keeping things shiny and getting ride of fingerprints and smudges. Also inhibits rust. I ordered mine online years ago from http://www.flitz-polish.com/default.asp, but I think you can find the stuff in hardware stores too, maybe gun stores. I don't use it on firearms myself currently, but I do on knives and other stuff I don't maintain as regularly.
For general use on the outside of a firearm, I just wipe it down with a silicone cloth. Anything else seems too oily and will attract dirt.
This is correct.
You dont need or want to oil a synthetic stock. You dont want oil on the outside of the gun. Hell, I patch the barrel of my bench guns out with pure alcohol before I shoot to get all the oil out. You only oil for storage so you dont get rust. I use a "Krazy Cloth" for wiping down the outside, and it works great. Anything oil like on the exterior will just trap dirt.

Great, thanks!
