So the Wii is getting a rhythm game. Band Mashups is
kind of like Guitar Hero, in that icons scroll up and you have to move your Wiimote left, right, down or in a stabbing motion in order to play one of 30 licensed songs. Yawn, right?
Wait.
You can choose to play every one of those 30 songs in one of five different ways: rock, funk/hip-hop, country western, Latin and marching band. Every song, every style. Which songs do you get to mutate horribly?
The Gorillaz- "Feel Good Inc."
Tag Team- "Whoomp! There It Is"
Tenacious D- "Master Exploder"
Ramones- "Blitzkrieg Bop"
The Commodores- "Brick House"
KC and the Sunshine Band- "That's The Way (I Like It)" from KC and the Sunshine Band.
Texas Tornados- "Adios Mexico'
Black Eyed Peas- "Dum Diddy"
Cypress Hill- "Insane in the Brain"
Kool & the Gang- "Jungle Boogie"
LL Cool J- "Mama Said Knock You Out"
The Fix- "One Thing Leads to Another"
Soundgarden- "Spoonman"
Def Leppard- "Photograph"
The Soggy Bottom Boys- "Man of Constant Sorrow"
You don't play by yourself, you're competing with another band who is trying to play your song a different way. The better you hit the notes, the more your version dominates. So if you want your country version of Jungle Boogie to beat out the marching band Jungle Boogie, you'd better be sharp.
If that doesn't sell you, let me say it again.
This game has the fucking Soggy Bottom Boys in it.http://wii.ign.com/articles/850/850132p1.html

I was just talking about how I hated the boss battles in Guitar Hero 3, but I think ripped into its own game and given music played across different genres, I might actually be interested in this. You have to check out the video on the second page of the preview: It works like any DDR/Beatmania clone, only notes float from the bottom to the top, and you can shake the Wiimote left, right, down or stab forward in time to the notes. There's also a scribble note, kind of like a drum roll in Donkey Konga. And more important, you're throwing attacks at the other player but you can also block the bigger ones in a tug-of-war type of section in the song.
Looks awesome. Between this and the Major Minor marching band game (and Rock Band, for those Wii-only people), the Wii's looking to be a great spot for rhythm gamers.
am the maaaaaaaaaan
of constant sorrrrrrrrrrow
no pleasure heeeeeeeere
on earth I've found
Loco en el coco.
My God, "Soggy Bottom Boys" in my music game?
This.... Is...... AWESOME!
I would have preferred "In the Jail-house Now" however.
Between this, Rock Band, Wii Music (or whatever it ends up being called) and the Parappa creator's marching band game it is going to be a great year for music titles on the Wii.
This sells it to me.
Go watch O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Now.
Imagine what the Hip-Hop version will sound like.
This will be hilarious.
Man, as if I needed another reason to buy a damn Wii.

I have just been offered a free copy of this to review by THQ's marketing company. Sadly, they are in the USA, and I am in the UK, and it's an NTSC copy.
Convince me you can write a good review of it for me to put up on my blog and it's yours.
terms and conditions apply yada yada.
Plus I'm in Maine, geographically that means I'm closer to you than most of the other US folks here
Still, I've heard that most of the bizarro versions of the songs on here are fun to listen to even though the game is crap.
PM your full name and address, and I'll send you details.
Any news of downloadable content?
Yay for thirty minute time frames!
The marketing firm wanted a quick response. They said they only have a few promo copies left. THey may have just been saying that, but I didn't want to risk it. The terms included "I will jump all over the first viable candidate."
Oh it's cool, I'm simply teasing you. I would have liked the opportunity, but I wouldn't have had time to get game played with my coursework atm.
First of all, much like other reviews have said, the waggle in this one does seem a bit flaky - but I think it's more getting used to get what type of movement the game is actually looking for - subtle movements more than huge arm waves (almost like Okami's combos). Thus far, it doesn't seem insurmountable though - I just got a really high score on the country-fied version of Mama Said Knock You Out when everything just "clicked" for me.
Second, the music and artstyle really are great. The character design is right up my alley - they really do look like outcasts from 80's/90's graphic adventure games. The song choices are pretty good - although there are quite a few I don't know - and the adaptations to different genres are done incredibly well.
Finally, the gameplay is pretty clever - it seems simpler in videos online, but when you're trying to play the notes, launch attacks and block incoming attacks it really can surprise you in its depth. It's really only hampered by the spotty waggle at times.
Overall, I can't wait to spend the week with it to see if I can overcome the controls and write my full review.
Yes - Band Mashups was the working title.
