(lttp) Nintendo DS - titles for the spouse

So a little while ago my wife and I decided to get in on the Nintendo DS after running short of new GBA titles. Turns out the DS is hard to get a hold of _anywhere_, at least where we live. Took us 3 hours of solid searching with multiple retailers and chains before finally locating a pink DS - we took it.

She loves it - I picked out a stack of games for ourselves and are having a blast. Being relatively new to the scene, I was wondering what titles are considered "must-plays" by most of you, or perhaps more importantly, which ones you think my wife would really enjoy. Here are the titles we have so far:

Meteos: Fun, if a bit repetitive after awhile. My wife likes the way all the different stages have unique styles, and colors. She's big into bright colors.

Rocket Slime: A big, big, big hit with the missus. She loves the cute storyline and characters, the terrible puns, and of course, the bright colors. Only problem is it has only one savefile storage capacity (doh).

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: She hasn't started it but I like it and expect she will too (she's big into Agatha Christie). I forsee it being short, though.

Hotel Dusk: Neither of us have tried it yet. I suspect I'll be liking it a lot more than she will.

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass: She started it, and seems to like it, although I had to help her out quite a bit even on the first dungeon. Somewhat surprisingly, the stylus-only gameplay mechanic didn't click with her like I thought it would.

Elite Beat Agents: Also a big, big hit with her - until she got to stage 15 with the aliens on Breezy difficulty, which turned out to be a mental wall she has no desire to surmount. Personally, I'm hung up on the same stage on Sweatin' - but I expect to get past it soon and try out the hardest difficulty level.

Rune Factory: Another big, big hit with her. She loved Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town on the GBA, so this was a no-brainer.

Titles I am considering for the both of us: Puzzle Quest, that weird Professor Layton puzzle game coming out soon, New SMB. For myself, Contra 4, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, and Mario Kart.

Any other suggestions? We obviously have a lot to keep us occupied for awhile, but still.

...I think you pretty much need Puzzle Quest. An awesome bejeweled/rpg game. My girlfriend loves it and I can't play a round without her jumping all over it "You missed a four, let me play, I'll do it better!"

Edit: Also, if she lives platform/adventure-y games? Kirby and the Squeak Squad. Cute and sort of easy, but once you try to get all the treasures some of them can get pretty difficult.

It sounds like she likes good DS games. New SMB is great, and Yoshi's Island is probably one of the best mainstream platformers ever. Puzzle Quest is good for one playthrough, which will take you a long time. Kirby Canvas Curse is super clever and stylus controlled. I wasn't crazy about Phantom Hourglass either, but I do love Canvas Curse.

I didn't love it, but based upon what you've told us, New Super Mario Bros would indeed be a good choice. Yoshi's Island 2 is better, in my opinion, though.

NSMB is fantastic, anyone and everyone should love it. Same for Puzzle Quest really.

Picross DS is a brilliant puzzle game. If you/your wide like Sodoku and/or Minesweeper at all it is highly recommended.

The Japanese version of Elite Beat Agents "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan" and it's sequel have completely different songs to EBA, definately worth checking out.

Get two copies of Animal Crossing. One for yourself and one for her. Make characters, visit each others towns, leave love notes, leave gifts, etc.

Me and my girlfriend do it over Wi-Fi.

That wouldn't work with only one DS, though. With one DS, you can get a single copy of Animal Crossing and both inhabit the same town... you can still leave each other messages and stuff, but it's not as much fun because you can't trade different items from different towns.

My mistake, I was under the impression that the OP had his own DS in addition to his significant other's.

Whether or not you have a second DS you should try out Animal Crossing. My wife (not really gaming oriented at all) was completely addicted to it. She just started it up again this weekend after months of not playing and is hooked again. Her whole town hates her though and of course there are weeds everywhere but she loves it.

I might have to pick up Animal Crossing for my gf. Sounds like something she'd enjoy.

She hated Puzzle Quest, but really enjoys Cooking Mama and Trauma Center.

A nintendo handheld thread wouldn't be complete without atleast one recommendation of Pokemon!

I dont' know if it still exists, but try WarioWare Touched. It released with the DS back in the day, so it may be near impossible to find.

Yeah, I don't know what happened to this game on store shelves, it's really hard to find. If you can find it, pick it up. It may not be as strong an entry to the series as Twisted, but it's still really fun.

Also, seconding the Animal Crossing suggestion. Every once in a while the girl and I still play it together... we've had it since the day it came out.

If you like Phoenix Wright/Hotel Dusk then you could give Touch Detective a try, it's a good midpoint between PW's text only adventure and HD's exploration.

Yeah, Touch Detective (and I'm assuming it's sequel) are very much in the vein of old school point and click LucasArts adventures. You can't fail or die, you just stall until you figure out whatever obscure puzzle you have to complete to progress. The art style alone warrants a purchase, though, considering they're only $20 each. I think I read another thread that some store had dropped the second one down to $15 recently.
