So, for these specialist achievements - do the usage/kill counts carry over between playthroughs? Can I get 75 pistol kills in one playthrough and 75 in another?

So. Bought this yesterday along with my brand new XBOX 360 (yay!).
And well, after playing for about 6½ hours, I have to say, this game is really impressive. The voiceacting is stunning, the battlesystem is fun and well, I can't say anything that's bad about this game. My good ol' Shepard is an Adept and I really like the skills he has. Lift is awesome, I love to lift up the normal geths and just let them fall down and die. It's so satisfying to hear the level up-sound after an enemy falls from the top of the room. I have gotten every team member that is possible to get (I guess) and now I have in my team Wrex (who wouldn't take him?) and Garrus. I really like my team. It's quite stable and both Wrex and Garrus are awesome characters.
I wish I could get a Volus ally though (they're the chubby and small guys with the breathing masks). They're so cool.
Didn't see this posted, but I was sure this would be the talk of hte thread by now. It's from GDC when they were talking about Mass Effect and the diaolog production for ME. Its the distance from the mic VA's should stand when recording.

I'm pretty sure Wrex and Garrus is the most powerful team possible. Level up Garrus sniper rifle, decryption and electronics.
I've currently got Wrex and Garrus in my team as well. How do you get use Garrus to use his sniper rifle? Or how close does the AI have to be to start using the Sniper Rifle? I definitely gained a new respect for the Sniper Rifle when I did my Infiltrator playthrough so I thought having Garrus support me with his Sniper Rifle would be great, but it just hasn't worked out well at all?
Yes I've selected the weapon in the weapon wheel...just haven't seen Garrus use the rifle at all unless we're closer in...which seems to defeat the point so I end up switching back to the assault rifle

just leave it equipped, he'll use it whenever and wherever. He rocks with it, trust me. You never need to switch him off.

Yep. Garrus is all kinds of sniper goodness.
As for which is the best team? Gameplay wise, depending on which class you play Ashley is sometimes better than Wrex.
But thematically, which I think goes hand in hand and what Tube was also saying, Garrus and Wrex is made of awesome. Their banter, their dialogue and the general backstories and way in which they approach combat is just so much better than other characters.
Garrus is definitely a sniper. You get him the full sniper tree skills and just have him plug away with his rifle. In some large encounters he one shots nearly everything. Put explosive rounds in his sniper and he one shots absolutely everything.
Wrex, despite not being a soldier, seems to tank so much better than Ashley. I think its mainly the retardedly good Krogan armour you can get later in the game. He gets out of so many fucked up situations too with apt use of his biotics.
Wrex and garrus is easily the best combination, from both a combat perspective and for enjoyment of the story.
Depending on my class, I often hate having Wrex with me. Garrus's selection of tech abilities is well-rounded enough that he doesn't really need someone backing him up with better tech powers, but Wrex's selection of biotics is so woefully inadequate that I never really use him without either being a biotic myself or taking Liara or Kaiden.
He's an okay tank, but that's often not at all what I want from a character and as a biotic, Wrex is horrible.
Yay, second playthrough, this time as renegade. This is his neutral expression:
Not particularly subtle, is it? :P
Then again, I gave my Renegade Shepard the black lipstick option, so I really shouldn't be talking.
What are you talking about? He is earth's best hope. :P

So I'm about halfway through, did Feros and Nov and sitting at level 40 with the Rich Achievement taken care of. Wrapping up some of the side missions before I head out to Vim.
I am very glad I picked this game back up after it sat untouched over the holidays.
Yeah I didn't think I even tried that hard and I got a passively good looking Male Shepard.
Now when I played through a second time as a Female, admittedly, I didn't change anything from the default female other than bigger lips and different hair. I think in the previous ME thread, we found out I wasn't alone.
Each planet is subtly different depending on how long you take to get to them. If you do ferros last, for instance, the villagers are very clearly slaves, whereas if you do it first you'd barely realise anything is wrong. Liara goes batshit if you leave her for too long also, and thinks you're a hallucination. I don't know how noveria is affected.
Huh. That is pretty cool. Guess things like that make it a bit more interesting for various runs through the game.
Yeah, the first time through the game I
Left Liara for last. I didn't realize you would get a character there.
I thought she was just crazy or something.
Oh man, that sounds awesome. Are there any vidoes of that conversation, perhaps?

Woah, how did you make a custom character that isn't horribly disfigured?
Every time I tried the face editor it was.. well... I just went with default Shepard.
Glad i'm not alone in this.
I usually use one of the presets and "work my way down" from there. Because all of them have correct anatomic attributes. The important things are the eye shape, and the positioning of the different "face parts". As you can tell my "evil" Shepard has features which are close together (nose, eyes, lips). This leaves a big chin and a big forhead - which makes him look like stubborn brick. You don't necessarily have to enlarge other head regions to get the same effect.
WHAT?Fuck Ashley. I've always hated her and I now I hate her so much more
Spoilers from Virmire ahead:
Okay, Wrex got the info about Sarens cure for genophage. I went to talk to him, everything went smoothly (atleast I thought it went) but then, Wrex get a bit pissed and ASHLEY SHOOTS HIM? And it wasn't enough for her to just shoot him once, she shot him several times. Thank god I saved before this and did the conversation again, Wrex didn't die. But still. Fuck Ashley. I wish I could shoot her.
Edit: Sent Ashley to fight along the salarians, I hope she dies.

I believe you might possibly be in luck right there.
One point that I believe makes sense if you've read the codex:
She didn't shoot him a whole bunch of times because she was evil. Krogans have a fully redundant central nervous system (like klingons in Star Trek, as I understand it). You know how whenever you shoot a krogan, they almost always get back up? That's what that is. Ash was shooting him to stop that from happening.
Still hardass, but not like those stormtroopers standing in a circle around the fallen female jedi and continuing to shoot her for no reason beyond Lucas kind of wanting a bukkake homage.
WHAT?Fuck Ashley. I've always hated her and I now I hate her so much more

How does this compare to KotoR? I loved the first one, and it seems like ME is just more of a great thing. Worth picking up a 360 for if the PC version is off the menu? (As well as for Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, CoD4, etc).
Anybody got any tips for some interesting class choices? I went Adept w/one character but got frustrated with only being able to use the pistol. Went soldier w/my new one and enjoy the weapon diversity but feel like he's kind of a dummy. I like the assault rifle, but none of the other classes will allow you to advance in it.
The pistol's actually quite powerful later on. By the end of the game with my infiltrator, I had marksman on almost constantly (there are about 2 seconds between when it finishes and when it's recharged).

If you get 150 kills with the assault rifle as your soldier, then you can unlock it as a bonus skill tree for any future characters. I'd also recommend trying a vanguard for combined biotic + shotgun badassery.
edit: I just can't imagine playing an infiltrator without using a sniper rifle most of the time.

Well, I picked up a 360 for this game and haven't regretted it.
As for how it compared to to KotOR... well, for me, KotOR had this really nostalgic Star Wars feel going for it (even more so than some of the movies, in my opinion) that Mass Effect understandably lacks. That doesn't make Mass Effect any worse, really, just... well, it feels different, that's all. More like Jade Empire than KotOR in my opinion (though I'm pretty sure people will disagree with me on that one).
Anyways, if you feel KotOR's greatness comes from its Star Warsiness or its combat system you might want to think about it some more.

The first part of the game on the Citadel gave off very strong KotOR vibes for me, although I couldn't quite place my finger on it. Well, y'know, guns and real-time combat and all that aside. :P I dunno about nabbing a 360 just for it, but if I looking at a range of games (like those up there), then it'd certainly tip the scales quite a bit for me. That said, my PC's actually pretty decent, so I'd lean towards waiting for the PC version if I didn't already have the 360 and ME.

Ditto that on the ARs and Vanguard. My first time through was a Vanny, and it was quite a blast. I just finished Insanity (on New Game+, so it's admittedly easier than starting fresh) with an Adept + AR, and that was hilarious fun. Nonstop barrier and tossing biotics everywhere is great...I don't think I even bothered to use cover...ever. Felt oddly like being a Terminator, except with magical powers. It was pure awesome.
And on the Vanguard note, has anyone tried out a Vanny with sniper rifles? I kinda like the idea of going shotty/sniper with biotics, and am interested to see if anyone's given it a go.

Yes.

this is the best thing i have seen since that panthers game where zednick got his throat cut with a skate.
Ran the Halo 3 A/V Calibration and then put in Mass Effect and went and talked to Wrex.
Mine eyes have seen the glory.

Wrex and Garrus have, by far, the best dialogue exchanges when you're standing around in elevators or talking with NPCs.

I like the sound of that.
Except for the parts where I hide behind a hill and plink a Geth Prime in the face for several minutes before it dies.

This is very important, I'm making Barack Shepard.
