BioShock and What it Be!

Bioshock is a game about wrenching Splicers, mutated humans who've spliced their genes too much through the miracle of Plasmids and Tonics. The game begins with our character, Jack, crashing into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean near a lighthouse. This lighthouse is our only refuge and leads down to the underwater utopia-turned-dystopia Rapture, and we get to see a giant whale so that's cool too. Soon afterwards, we get bossed around by Atlas so we'll try to help him out since we have nothing else to do. Maybe we can escape with him when he gets everything sorted out.

Why Make a Let's Play?

Because I said so. Want to fight about it? Okay then. Bioshock was one of the most memorable games to come out last year and won many awards, including my heart, the most coveted award of all. It's modeled after System Shock 2, taking many elements and themes directly from the game. It's also got great art direction, story telling, and a power that shoots bees at people.

I'm going to make this as interactive as I can. If anyone has votes on which plasmids/tonics I should use then let me know. There are only two exceptions to this. The first is, don't vote on Telekinesis because I always use it. It's one of my favorite plasmids so I always keep it in. The other is, I'll always have hacking tonics in to make hacking as easy as possible so don't vote on engineering tonics.

Welp, this is my first Let's Play with commentary and hopefully it won't be too lame.

The Vydias!

I still haven't beaten it so I'm gonna have to stay out of this thread for awhile but I wish you luck and the first vid quality is pretty excellent.

Or what would load of it anyway, Google video doesn't seem to like me.

I'm going to watch this because supposedly it's a great game and I don't have a computer capable of running it.

Also, I'm going to ask right away: are you considering uploading videos to other sites that allow for higher quality video? I've had good experience with Stage6.

While I haven't beaten it yet, I think I'm going to follow this one; my one complaint is that you can barely hear the game. If it's intentional by all means keep it that way, it's just a shame to miss out on the excellent voice work for the game.

Not bad, not bad at all. I'll definitely be keeping up with this one, having never played Bioshock myself. You might want to consider Stage 6 for future videos, though, since the quality is far, far better than you get from Google.

e: oh, you mentioned Stage6 problems already. Okay then!

Ohhh an LP can't capture how amazing this intro is. It's one of my favorite video game intros ever. Now i'm going to have to replay Bioshock again, it's lucky I have free time right now.

This is yet another one i'll be watching regularly. Thanks for doing it, TV's Frank, i'm looking forward to it.

Interesting....I just put a new vidya card in my rig (I'm still on AGP so I'm running out of options), so of course I had to start another run just to see how much better it performs. I personally favor fire plasmids over the others; there always seem to be interesting things you can combo with it. Good luck, I'll follow as much as I can!

Generally, there is an unspoken stature of spoilage regarding Let's Plays in that games are left alone for the first 12 or 18 months of their existence. But who am I to question progress?

I think Something Awful's rule is 6 months minimum, which will be hitting in a few days.

Also, I don't think I can get the volume any higher because of the stupid way I'm recording game audio. I'll see if I can figure something out.

Six months on SA indeed, but usually unspoken as longer with game that have significant spoilers that are better when played than seen. This was mainly due to LP threads originally made to chronicle games that people passed over. But enough of this talk! HAVE AT YOU.

Speaking of spoilers, I'm still working through this game as best as I can with school and what not, but I'll be darned if I almost didn't have all that ruined in the current issue of OXM where they (I assume) spoil the ending as well as a fight later on. I would have been incredibly pissed if I didn't have my instincts pop in and stop reading the article.

I really enjoy the game. It's not "hard", and I wish there was more variety in the bad guys (as it is they either disappear, shoot fire or run around and try to whack you). Most can be killed pretty easy once you have a good stock of plasmids and weapons, and boss battles are virtually nonexistent. Of course the gameplay in and of itself is fantastic, and hooboy if this isn't the most crackerjack story ever.

And oh man - is this game gorgeous. I started playing it on an SDTV and it looked good; I then tossed it in on my HDTV months later, and damn. Spent almost an hour backtracking and running around and looking at all the water and level design I had already completed.

RE: Game volume. I never had a problem here.

Yeah the game's enemies can get pretty linear but your in for some cool stuff later on. Plus some goddamn cool scenarios to move around in and not to mention
Cohen's outburst in Fort Frolic. That whole level was all kinds of creepy awesomeness

IMO the game makes up for it by having so many ways to deal with them. There's more enemies than it seems too, they're all similar humanoids but differently equipped.

    Next part's uploading now.

Because I'm curious: (late game spoiler)
Am I the only one who didn't trust Atlas? As in, constantly saying 'Why should I care about you, again?' Oh, your family. Huh. Nope, sorry. Still don't care.

I dunno, maybe after Polito I have issues, but...

I figured Atlas was an alternate personality of Andrew Ryan, given the names chosen for both. So I was slightly surprised. Really didn't see the "would you kindly" twist coming, though. Shame I was barely involved in the game enough to care.

Not quite done - I'm turning myself into a Big Daddy. Or something.

In non-spoilery news, the game doesn't feel like SS2 to me. I've been thinking about it, and would like other opinions - my own is that it feels like a cross between Thief and Doom.

Doom for the enemies, and how the levels, while distinct, at least appear connected; Thief because of the way enemies interact with you - that is, they run for health (read: help) - and the art style reminds me of Thief II.

Mmm It didn't feel wholly SS2 but at the same time you can't deny that numerous aspects (Upgrading yourself, weapons, slots etc), the creepy horror aspect and the choices you have to make do all have that "System Shock" feel.

But I think your right; SS2 was a very different game

I was waiting for someone to do this, and it should make for a pretty fun LP. Given the LPer's username, I'm not surprised I'm kinda getting a MST3K vibe from it (albeit maybe a KTMA-era feel -- spontaneous and a bit toned-down but still funny).

Yeah, it was a bit more improvisational back then so the riffs weren't as constant, but it had its own kind of ramshackle charm. (This is the big nerd bragging point that Minnesotans get to pull out every so often: "I saw it back in '88 when it was on a UHF station!" The station even showed unMSTed original versions of some of the movies weeks after they'd been shown on MST3K.)
