Dear PS3 Owners (Accomplishment System)

RuinsRuins Registered User regular

Would any of you be kind enough to tell me what games have the "Accomplishments" system in place already. I know Devil May Cry 4 does and I think Uncharted does too. But what about other recently released games. Does Burnout Paradise have them? What about the new PSN store downloadable games?

And to maybe make this thread have a little more longevity, make it a general Accomplishments thread.

Can't you just get your mum to give you a gold star whenever you finish a game or something? Maybe pin it up on the fridge or take a photo of it to and put it in your on-line profile if you're desperate to show other people.

Came in expecting a flame/troll. OP disappointed. Rook delivered.

I can't help with the actual question but I can suggest you change the thread title to be more descriptive. Possibly "PS3 Games With Achievements?"

Or I could just want to get some more playtime out of a game by having more things to do that I never think up. Back under your bridge troll.

The sad thing is that if this were a thread about 360 Achievements, a lot have people would have already been here defending the Achievement system against the inevitable naysayers. But since it's a PS3 thread, no one's going to defend it.

I, for one, am glad that Sony is making an Achievement system of their own.

I don't own a PS3, but yeah it's good to see Sony adopt this.

The Achievement system is a fantastic excuse for re-playability, and to be quite honest I think it should be a console staple from now on.

Unharted has a reward system for obsessive play... as does ratchet and Clank, DMC4. Those are the ones I know about... Warhawk too if you count the ribbons, medals and whatnot. The only thing is these games (Espeically ratchet and uncharted) actually give you something for your time... new outfits, movies, all kinds of goodies. I dont know if any of these will go into home when it comes out and I really dont care.

I'm pretty sure they changed it to "Accomplishments" but you will still have trophies in a trophy room when Home rolls about.

I think the big difference between the xbox and PS3 is that on the PS3 achievments are implemented completely in game and to the discretion of the developer.

In other words I have no idea how my friends are doing in DMC4 until I fire up the game.

From what I have seen of the Xbox it seems to be a standard for the games that it be implimented into their gamertag and perhaps is a requirement of microsoft.

The PS3 has no uniform system but allows the discretion of the developer, where as the xbox has a unified system but is tacked on to every game.

Perhaps home will change that. Perhaps.

Please correct my ignorance if that is not the case.

Resistance: Fall of Man has built in "Skill Points" which are basically achievements (that also unluck concept art and stuff when you do them.) I just recently saw this game for $40 at target, yay price drop.
The multiplayer of this game also has medals for accomplishing various things.

Aside from what's already mentioned, that's about it for ps3 at the moment. Hopefully the trophy system in Home changes that.

Jumping through twenty merchant stands in Assassin's creed is not my idea of lengthening playtime. It's not even that difficult to accomplish. If anything it's just a pointless (are you really that bored) time-sink. Do I really need to steal 200 throwing knives to complete the game? Do I really?

Yeah I think the vast majority of achievements are pretty lame. You play a game because its a fun. Some achievements can be a fun challenge to accomplish. (Like launching the gnome in half-life 2) But most of them are just a stupid fucking grind so you can add another 100 points to your gamer score. I find that sad.

I do hope Sony adds them to shut people up who complain about the lack of them, but personally I'm going to ignore them. I don't feel the need to wave around my e-peen.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

You.... are aware you don't have to do them, right? If an achievement/accomplishment/whatever seems pointless, than don't do it!

I think they're a fantastic way to "mark" things you've completed in a game, and then compare with friends to see if they found ones you didn't or vice versa. It doesn't have anything to do with some kind of e-cred, it's just a fun way to see what you accomplished.

If people really think they're just for bragging rights, then why do they care if others like them? I say kudos to Sony for adopting them, and I hope that Nintendo will do the same (although I'd like to see them all unified, a la XBOX Achievements).

No, but on the flipside getting the Conversationalist goal and talking to Lucy every chance you get apparently provides some nice insight into the game, and it's something that some people might not think to do on their own. There are good and bad achievements, just like there are good and bad games. If you don't like the bad ones, then don't do them -- if a person complains about shitty achievements but does them anyway, that says a lot more about the type of person he/she is than anything about developer creativity.

I've always thought Gamerscore was the more useless of the whole situation, and in that respect I might actually like how Sony's handling the implementation better.

PS3 "accomplishments" also give alot of in game goodies. Collecting all of the treasures and doing all of the side stuff in uncharted gives points towards unlocking new costumes, movies, even different graphic modes. Ratchet and Clank does the same. Id like to see that become standard in PS3 games since they use the blu ray and have extra room to put all this extra content.

I tend to think Achievements and stuff would have been better if they would just be things you kind of get along the way in the game and nothing else. They should have really just been something for your friends to look at your profile to see exactly where you were in the game.

Well I quite like the little icons, and by now I have some ungodly number of them. The whole Gamerscore thing is pretty ancillary.

I'm wondering what one's Home space would look like after 2 years of gaming

I find it sad that people dumb down the achievement system to the points, and e-peen flexing by a select few people.

They can't force devs to add extra unlockable stuff in all their games. On 360 all games must have achievements but what they are and what they do (or don't do) is completely at the dev's discretion. I could see Sony asking all future ps3 games to have trophies/accomplishements but nothing more than that. Although in an ideal world all games would have tons of cool stuff to unlock.

If I may point out, many games have been doing just this kind of thing for years. Just without the Gamerscore or Trophy or whatever.

Now, if the PS3 version of Achievements can also provide the player with something beyond the game or a digital trophy, then that might be something. Discounts on PSN purchases say, or even, I suppose, exclusive downloadable content when reaching a certain amount of points.

Yeah, I like looking at my achievements, 'cause it's just a neat little extra, but they're mostly just an idea/challenge generator. I lot are too tedious and boring to do (get 10,000 kills in Undertow), or something I don't usually want to do (beat the game on Rape difficulty), but sometimes they give me neat ideas for things to try, almost like sidequests.

They're a nice bonus, and they can't really take a lot of dev resources to do, so I support their existence.

I would personally like to see very difficult achievements reward the player, with items like avatars, like the gears of war achievement.
